Who would ever forget the Cabbage Patch Dolls' craze back in the 1980s? Toy stores will literally have long queues of mothers and children alike, patiently waiting for them to open so that they can purchase the latest version of Cabbage Patch Dolls. And as soon as the doors of those toy stores swung open, the craze begins as each person will hurriedly go to the nearest doll stands to get the best quality and most beautiful kinds of patch dolls all to their hearts' desire.
What was about these pudgy-faced vinyl dolls that created such intense fervor to people back in the days (or perhaps, even up to now)? Well, it all started in the year 1979 when Babyland General Hospital based in Cleveland, Georgia began producing these Cabbage Patch Dolls. Xavier Roberts, a Georgian sculptor, was the one behind the original designs of these Cabbage Patch Dolls. Many people regard these dolls as very strange looking or peculiar to some extent because they really register a distinct feature if compared to the early dolls that were produced. They had very round or lumpy faces with some small, soft-touching arms to match. The doll's hairs were also made out of yarn and their eyes in particular were close set. The designs of each doll was also unique making every Cabbage Patch Dolls that were released a uniquely looking toy or "individual".
The place where they are produced, Babyland General Hospital, wad also a distinct place for the dolls are being projected as if they are being housed inside a maternity ward. The sales personnel attending to the store are also dressed in maternity ward dresses or outfits that adds more to the very creative atmosphere. The people behind Cabbage Patch Dolls also innovated the way they will sell their dolls, that instead of using Cabbage Patch Dolls for Sale; they will use Cabbage Patch Dolls up for Adoption. This gimmick totally became a hit to many people and has gained the dolls a wider consumer market share.
Roberts sold the rights to produce his dolls to the Coleco Toy Company in the year 1982. The Coleco dolls that were produced posed some great similarities to the Babyland Dolls, except the heads that were previously made out of cloth was now made out of vinyl. Every Cabbage Patch Doll was also treated as if they were real children for each has their own birthdays, unique names, birth certificates and adoption papers. Children totally appreciated the idea of adopting their own dolls for they have the chance to send the adoption papers to Coleco signify their intent of adopting and owning one doll. And if their doll will celebrate its first year birth anniversary, they will receive a birthday card straight from the company itself!
Cabbage Patch Dolls are still available on certain areas although it will be best if one will go to the original place where it was first produced, the Babyland General Hospital, in order to see the vintage Cabbage Patch Doll items.
