Dress Your Baby for Winter Weather

Ranked #5,864 in Parenting & Kids, #197,174 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund

Winter and cold weather can often be a source of significant concern for novice parents.
Many parents are struggling to make sure their baby is comfortable and warm. On the other hand, it is important to take out you child out into fresh air at least once a day, even during the winter time. However, you need to make sure that your child is feeling pleasantly warm.

Same as during the warm days, your own sense of comfort should be a primary guideline for dressing your child properly (unless you're one of those people that is always hot or cold - if that is a case, you should better rely on the assessment of your significant other, or other close people). However, if your baby is under 6 months of age, she or he may need a bit more protection. This is because the ratio of their body surface area is much larger than their weight, which makes it impossible for babies to create heat by shivering.

Daily Wear

The most effective approach during the cold weather is to wear a several layers of clothing. This helps prevent restrictions of the movement, which may result from wearing less than two heavy and thick items. The most practical and warm winter clothes are filled with feathers or imitation feathers. You should always put a cap on baby's head, even if it's only chilly outside. The cap helps to retain body heat (up to 25% of body heat is lost through the head). If the outside temperature is below zero, the cap should also cover the baby's ears.

Baby's hands should be protected by gloves, feet by socks and boots, and neck with a scarf. If it is extremely cold or if a strong wind is blowing outside, you can warp a scarf around baby's face or protect it with a linen mask. At the same time, make sure the baby's nose is not covered and that she or he is breathing at ease. If it snows or rains, you can put a protective cover over the baby carriage. This will shelter the child from precipitation and retain heat, as well. However, even the well-dressed child should not stay out too long when the weather is cold.

Shifting Weather

One of the most confusing things for less experienced parents is the shifting weather, characteristic for spring and autumn, but also increasingly frequent in other two seasons.

How should you dress your child when the morning is sunny and gentle but the weather forecast announces thunderstorms and a significant drop in temperature? Again, the best solution for such a situation is to dress in layers. While doing so, it is the most practical to choose lighter layers of clothing, which can be dressed and undressed when the weather starts to change from warm to cold and vice versa. It is also good to carry a blanket whenever you go out, to be ready if the temperature falls sharply. We would also recommend carrying a hat in all weather conditions - lightweight with a brim for warmer weather, and a warm hat for cold days.

For Comfortable Sleep

It is recommended to maintain your room temperature between 20 i 22%, during the cold days, and between 15 i 18% during the cold nights (if you find it difficult to estimate the temperature in the room, install a thermometer close to the place where your baby spends the most of its time, for example, above the bed - but always make sure the thermometer is out of the baby's scope). If indoor temperature is higher than these recommended values, dry and overheated air could damage the lining of the nose and make your baby more susceptible to cold-causing microbes. Similarly, overheated air will dry out the baby's skin and cause itching.

You can use a bottle of hot water or a heating element to warm your baby's bed before you put it to sleep (just be careful not to overheat the sheet). You can also use flannel sheets, which are great for cold winter nights and very pleasant to the touch. Cover your child in layers, so that it feels both comfortable and warm. If your child rejects blankets, try putting him or her into a sleeping bag - these are especially practical for babies and children under one year of age. Babies will release the excess heat from the body through their heads - therefore, consult your pediatrician about whether your baby should wear a night-cap or not.

Keep in mind that the children's room is cooler at night than during the daytime, and that child's metabolism slows down during the sleep. Always be ready to use extra blankets. However, you should definitely try to avoid one of the most common mistakes, which is dressing your baby too warm for the bed. If the child wakes up during the night in sweat, remove one or two layers of blankets.

Is Baby Dressed Properly?

You can easily find if your baby is feeling comfortable by simply touching its arm, thigh or back of the neck. If these parts of the body are cold and/or your child is restless, he or she is probably feeling cold, so you should dress it properly or cover it with a blanket. If the child's skin is hot and sweaty, if a hair is damp, or if your child breathes rapidly or it's restless - it's probably dressed too much and you should remove a few layers of clothing. If the hands and feet are cold to the touch but the body is comfortably warm and dry but your baby still continues to cry, it may be hungry, thirsty or tired.

You'll probably hear the following comment many times: "keep your baby warmer, its hands and feet are so cold!" However, do not immediately jump for another blanket or a jacket. The hands and the feet are typically colder than the rest of the body. Therefore, it is not possible to find if your baby is feeling comfortable by simply testing the hands and the feet. This is because the baby's circulatory system is not yet fully developed. Similarly, if your baby has sneezed a couple of times, it doesn't mean that it's cold. Perhaps he or she is just irritated by the sun or feels a need to purify the nostrils. The same goes for the hiccups, which are quite common in babies and, usually, have nothing to do with feeling cold.

Exceptions That Prove the Rule

Just as there are persons who are feeling cold in the summer, there are those who are feeling hot during the cold winter days. If you are one of those people, your inner thermostat will not be reliable determinant of what a child is supposed to wear. If this is the case, you should ask someone with an proper sense of comfort for a help (your significant other, your mother, or any other person of trust). Also, if you feel like your child is warmer and colder than you, accept that as true and dress the child in accordance with this fact.
