From the lens Dressing Steampunk: How to get started.

So, let me know how I did. Or even better, let me know how you did. Are you off to find the perfect steampunk accessories?

Thanks for this! My wedding theme is Steampunk - I'm sending all the people who say "But I don't know what to wear!" to your page - maybe they'll 'get it'!

Very informative. My friend was into steampunk for a while after seeing it at multiple conventions. She bought a few steampunk items but never really got into it. Meanwhile I've been looking into it as well and should I decide to try it out I've decided it would have to be something utterly spectacular for my first time! I'm still coming up with a concept and such though I look forward to the day I am able to accomplish my goal.

I found alot of things at Micheals in the place where you can buy beads and such, I found army badges, victorian cameos, lots of lace, brass chains, compasses, and a TON of things to accesorize a steampunk costume!
  • SydneyH Jun 19, 2011 @ 10:50 am | delete

  • artvixn Jun 13, 2011 @ 11:50 pm | delete
Yes. Great book, but it isn't steampunk. It's too technologically advanced. It has some of the aesthetic though.
  • happynutritionist Jun 13, 2011 @ 9:43 pm | delete
I've learned something from your lens...and that is that I'm really out of touch with the times:-) Never heard of steampunk before, but that's okay, it's good to learn something new every day, and now I've done that. Looks like really creative fun! Congrats on the LOTD

Enjoyed your lens, and it looks like great fun! I've been dressing funky for many years, but not as put together as your outfits! (I don't seem to look good in mine either!)lol, but I enjoy unusual, creative, and useful in my wardrobe, as evidenced by some of my lenses on button jewlery, etc. Thanks for a good look into steampunk! And congrats on being chosen LOD!!!!!

  • PlayOutside Jun 13, 2011 @ 3:33 pm | delete
Congrats on the LOD! I often look for items at garage sales to list on ebay as "steampunk". Usually great old welders' goggles. Even tho I do not dress up "steam", it is fun to send the stuff on to someone who does.
  • dianbee Jun 13, 2011 @ 3:32 pm | delete
Really enjoyed this lens! As a writer these kind of archetypes fascinate me.

  • kajohu Jun 13, 2011 @ 12:28 pm | delete
What fun to read! I read Asimov magazine each month, and there are occasionally "Steampunk" type stories in that. Also the TV series "Firefly" comes to mind -- don't know if that's really Steampunk, or "Wild wild west / sci fi", but it still comes to mind :-)
  • artvixn Jun 13, 2011 @ 12:41 pm | delete
Firefly is not steampunk, although it has some of the aesthetic. It's too technologically advanced. You can take a look at my Steampunk Litmus Test for help on determining what fits and what does not. http://www.squidoo.com/steampunk_litmus_test

  • artvixn Jun 13, 2011 @ 11:52 pm | delete
I'm 48. I run a steampunk convention and we get attendees of every age. You're never too old for it. If it appeals to you, then why not?
  • greg2213 Jun 13, 2011 @ 11:36 am | delete
Finally, a LOTD that I can get into. :) Being a cyberpunk fan I tend to learn towards the tech and the weaponry. Most of the steampunk art I've seen has been more in that direction. Your costumes and such have expanded my outlook, in addition to looking pretty darn cool. :)

    Well done!!

There's a guy who makes amazing steampunk laptop boxes (the laptop is inside and you can actually use it, but it looks totally like a steampunk computer would be) and other similar stuff. Can send you the url if you want. I think you may love it :)

  • E.G. Jun 3, 2011 @ 2:44 pm | delete
I humbly offer a few mor archetypes to add to your list:

Domestic (nanny/nursemaid/butler/manservent) typically uniformed house-assistants, usually accompanying an aristocrat, with gadgets that would assist in any situation, such as a steam powered tea-cosy, a swiss-army baby entertainer, or perhaps a mary poppins style bottomless carpetbag.

Scamp/busker/pickpocket or streeturchin: ratted, old and dirty streetclothes, perhaps an instrument to play. Long scarf and fingerless gloves. (think Oliver Twist/Tiny Tim in Scrooge stories.)

Snake Oil Salesman/carny/circus performer/organ grinder with monkey: vests with no shirts, handlebar moustaches and striped pants. Girls in dusty but brightly colored leotards and tights.Bottles of medicines in a bandelier for the snake oil salesmen. Maybe a tiny balancing umbrella for the tightrope walker girl...

lamplighter/chimneysweep/milkmen/news merchants: any victorian era blue collar worker that is no longer a common job.

the foreigner: oriental, indian, egyptian, or victorian sci fi based alien wear (hawkmen?). make all gear based on the culture, brass fan, a snake charmer's basket with steam powered snake...

self-made men/women, the mad doctor/necromancer, mechanical beings: anything like Mary Shelley's frankenstein to Dr. Loveless from Wild Wild West to TicTock from Return to Oz.

How do i find other people/events that i can share my Explorer outfit? I love your outfit!
  • artvixn May 12, 2011 @ 11:43 am | delete
Great question! My first answer is always, you should come to Steamcon in Seattle. It's a really great event, but I might be a wee bit biased. Beyond that I'd Google steampunk events with your area. There are so many these days! It's hard to even recommended a particular calendar because no one seems able to keep up. And if there is nothing near you, get a group of friends to go to the zoo with you. Let me know what you find to do.

Just wondering if anyone wears their outfits in everyday life, especially if you are a guy working in a corporate environment? I'm a computer system administrator at a small company and just starting to put an outfit together. It would be kind of cool to be able to wear my selection a couple times a month rather than the usual oxford / khaki combo.
  • artvixn Feb 24, 2011 @ 12:27 pm | delete
    Brian,

Yes there definitely are people who do that. As long as your company doesn't mind, I'd say go for it! You can be a trendsetter.
  • Brian Feb 24, 2011 @ 1:16 pm | delete
When looking for clothes for office life, what should I be looking for to start with? I saw one website that suggested getting a vest and building around that.

I'm going to have to take time building this. My kids like doing something they call "eating"...

    (hmmm "snifftwit" for my captcha)
  • artvixn Feb 24, 2011 @ 1:32 pm | delete
A vest is a great start. My husband has quite a collection these days. Make sure there is a watch pocket and find a cool pocket watch and chain. A bowler hat would be fun if you are a hat type. A Victorian gentleman wouldn't be caught without one.

Get into thrift store hunting. It doesn't have to be a really expensive hobby.

I got squidbash. Kind of appropriate.
  • Maria Feb 13, 2011 @ 10:19 pm | delete
What a fantastic site! A few friends and I randomly decided to do steampunk outfits for an anime convention we're attending. I was only very vaguely familiar with the whole concept until literally a few days ago. I've been mentally putting together an ensemble but wasn't sure if I was going about it properly. This is a wonderfully informative site! Thank you so much! I love all the pictures, too. Really helps give a feel for many different aspects of steampunk! Thank you!
  • soulswallo Dec 31, 2010 @ 8:26 pm | delete
I'm going to a steampunk convention in a few months and I'm still trying to decide if I want to dress the part. Your ideas here are making me lean toward YES!
  • Joy Hayward Dec 13, 2010 @ 12:58 am | delete
My friend Tony Hicks gave me your web-site, you gave wonderful ideas, I am going to look in to it asap, Thanks for the ideas !
  • ArdenBaird Nov 16, 2010 @ 11:17 am | delete
Awsome lens! I hang out in Second Life and I've discovered that I have a thing for Victorian ball gowns. I also like the "Lady Adventurer" idea. Now if I could only put together a look in RL :D
  • KJ_Paris Oct 22, 2010 @ 5:37 am | delete
I have to dress Victorian/ Steampumk for a wedding I am attending in November. I am still not getting all of this. I think I need someone to show me exactly how to dress/ and what to buy. I guess I'm not all that creative.
  • artvixn Oct 22, 2010 @ 10:16 am | delete
KJ: For a wedding, you can probably get away with just a Victorian look. I would suggest looking at Recollection's website. They have a section labeled Victorian. you can get a skirt and blouse or a fancy dress depending on how formal the wedding is and how much you want to spend. http://recollections.biz/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=R&Category_Code=Victorian
You will need to let them know when you need the outfit by, make it a few days early so you can feel prepared. Even if you don't buy from them, this will give you an excellent idea of styles of the period. I hope this helps. Enjoy the wedding and don't worry too much about your outfit. (I made an assumption that you are female, but I suppose I might be incorrect. If I am try Gentleman's Emporium. http://www.steamporium.com/steam.php)
  • Anny Oct 10, 2010 @ 11:36 am | delete
"If you are a mechanic, maybe a skirt would be silly."

I noticed your later comment that pants for a mechanic would be practical and appropriate regardless of gender, but how neat would it be to be a mechanic in a well-fashioned skirt? Just for the sake of breaking down the stereotype that mechanics must be men, or at least dress in a "masculine" sort of way. I'm getting ideas for an awesome outfit... :-)

I just wanted to say thank you for writing a very wonderful article with very interesting pictures attached. For the first time steampunk-er like myself, this article was a golden find. Out where I am located Steampunk is practically non-existant, replaced with other forms of cosplay and the like, so being out here alone trying to get into a new hobby or "thing" without any other people to guide you is very disheartening, but when I find things like this online I get excited. My first outfit is actually based on your aviatrix outfit and I couldn't thank you enough for explaining where you found the various peices. Dare I say it even motivated me to go out and finally get something together using your tips and guidelines!

Thank you again for a very wonderful and well written article, you have directly assisted me in starting my Steampunk adventures in an area where there is none!

How lovely! You have so many awesome outfits. :-) Don't know if I'll have anything steampunky put together by dragon*con this year, but I'll ogle all the costumes. :-D

Cool ideas! I was wondering how I could take my gothic club gear and tailor it into steampunk without spending an arm and a leg. I got some inspiration here. I wear a lot of black, but also like brown...I am so glad steampunk became popular, so I won't be known as the goth who wears brown...

I noticed you use elements, like the shirt in different shots. I have this velvet opera coat, I think I could make into an outfit, plus I have top and bowler hats. Trying to also figure out how to incorporate my steel boned corset into the mix. Being Victorian goth by nature, I already got the boots, so I have a good start.

Didn't know ConDor existed and I live in San Diego. I will look into going to it next week, though it won't have the steampunk stuff going on. Quite saddened.

Great article. I'm going to be on a SP panel at ConDor (SciFi convention) in San Diego the end of this month, telling them how to costume SP. I'm coming from the historical Victorian costuming aspect but I'd like the let them see others. I'll share the link to your site with them. Thanks!
