Drills for Girls Softball

Sometimes coaches overlook the importance of base sliding drills for girl's softball.  The most standard drill that is used for sliding is when the team runs on wet grass or mud while two people loosely hold a rope in front of the base so the player is forced to go down to the ground.  However, players are still able to put their arms down when they should have their arms over their heads while they slide.  What is the missing link?  Eggs!

Drills for Girls Softball Practice: Focus on Sliding

"Scrambled Eggs" is one of the most popular sliding drills for girl's softball. This drill does not take much preparation but just make sure that your team is comfortable with sliding into the bases without eggs first! Otherwise things could get messy. Make sure that you have about a dozen eggs (not hardboiled!) to use. If the eggs are hardboiled then the players will not have as much incentive to preserve them as they slide!

You must split the team up in fourths. Put ¼ of them behind first base, ¼ behind second base, ¼ behind third base, and ¼ behind home plate. You must demonstrate to the team how the slide should look. You must accentuate that they should keep their arms over their heads and not use them to break their fall. This is where the eggs will play a significant role in the drill. It will be even more effective if you demonstrate with the eggs too!

Then you will give two eggs (one for each hand) to the first person that is in line at home. At the blow of your whistle, she will run toward first base. She should use the methods that she previously learned for sliding but also integrate hand/arm placement. The eggs should remain in the runner's hands, above their head and intact during and after the slide. This sounds a little bit unreasonable but you will be surprised how careful the team will be when there is a potential egg-shower!

Drills for Girls Softball that are Fun and Effective

Once the runner slides into first base, she will hand the eggs to the first person in line there and then that player should repeat the routine to second base. Have the team continue doing this until everybody has had a chance to run the bases. The goal is to keep the eggs in one piece! However, if one or more of the eggs happen to break, obviously make use of the other eggs.

"Scrambled Eggs" is one of the most fun drills for girl's softball. Not to mention, you will be pleasantly surprised by how well this trains the team to run and slide. While they won't have eggs during the actual game, with enough practice, the form will become routine. "Scrambled Eggs" is a drill that the team can look forward to and work hard for!
