I really didn't know anything about these trees! 2000 years old trees, and people cut holes in them to pass through with cars! Thais seems awful to me...But the trees are fabulous, one of nature's miracles, I might say. I would love too see one up close in this lifetime! Great work! Great subject!

I haven't driven through a Giant Redwood, but I saw them when my parents took me to Yosemite National Park when I was a little girl. I can remember how huge those trees were! Especially to a kid. Thanks for sharing this lens, although I don't think it's nice to cut holes in ancient trees so folks can drive through them. Still interesting though!

The old postcards are wonderful. You have constructed a fantastic lens. The Redwood forests are just beautiful. Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoias-"The Big Trees") distribution is centered in Sequoia National Park, and an impressive visit as well.

Outstanding lens you have here. A great drive through tree is located about 5 miles north of Marysville, WA. It's located at the rest area on I-5 North. Worth checking out if you are ever in the area.

when i visited my brother in sf, ca, he brought me to the redwood forest national park. i was so tiny compared to those giant conifers and redwood trees. i enjoyed your pictures and understand why you can't drive thru anymore. it is hazardous to drive thru, you'll never know when the trees will give way and fall down on you.angel blessings.

Boy, do you make me miss home. I was born and raised in Northern California, and now live in Indiana. Seeing this lens brings back memories of my grandparents taking us kids to see the drive-thru tree (I wish I could remember which one it was). I grew up around the red woods and do miss them greatly. You brought tears to my eyes. I am going to save up some money to go see them again. I want to thank you for making this lens. It is wonderful.

(My house, here in NY, was built in 1930) It's about 2' x 1-1/2' and in beautiful original black and white condition. Fun to read your article and look at modern video!

On one of our family vacations we drove through Wawona Tree in Yosemite in the 1960's. I think that makes me nearly as old as the tree!

I'm from Redding, CA so going to the Redwoods was a annual appearance by my family. In Utah now and your lens took me back to my childhood, 'thumbs up' for your beautiful lens.

I must admit that being British and living in France the whole concept of driving through a tree is totally alien, so I found your lens absolutely fascinating. You learn something new every day!

What a great lens, I have never seen a giant redwood, but it is way up high on my 'to do' list! What a shame so many of these great giants have been felled. Everyone MUST work to save the ones remaining!

Nice set of photos showing the auto and human history with these trees. I do wish they would stop letting people drive through the trees, sort of like an insult to such lovely redwoods.

Along the coast, my husband and I stayed in a rustic cabin built under the canopy of redwood trees. We walked up through area that had burned years before, amazing these tall trees made it through the fires.

We have not had the pleasure and thrill to drive through a giant redwood but have always wanted to do so with my family. Your lens is great in that all the photos and content depict the experience in a very real way. Appreciate your sharing it, enjoyed it very much.

I am a self confessed tree-hugger, so I really love this lens. Those red woods are awesome, they must have seen some things in their life. I would love to visit them one day .
  • CCGAL Sep 3, 2011 @ 12:25 pm | delete
Oh, I hope you do get to visit. Ladybird Johnson Grove just north of Orick, CA, has the tallest tree and many wonderful hiking trails. There is nothing on earth like the Giant Coastal Redwoods, and I wish everybody could come and experience them at least once.
  • scarlettohairy Aug 28, 2011 @ 11:24 pm | delete
Love this lens! I have an old paperweight (wood base with an image of a car driving through a redwood with a glass bubble top) that was my aunt's. I'd love to drive through one of these trees.
  • CCGAL Sep 3, 2011 @ 12:26 pm | delete
Oh, that paper weight would be priceless to me if I were you - memories of a long gone era and of a relative too. I hope you get to visit the trees. You will love them, I bet.
  • LaraineRose Aug 28, 2011 @ 12:31 am | delete
A very lovely lens .. it brings back fond memories. I am very familiar with the redwood giants. I remember a time when there was no charge to go through the trees with your car. On a recent visit, I was surprised that there was a charge. There was another tree situated in Vancouver's Stanley Park, Canada, that was big enough for a car to go through. Unfortunately it was burned .. on purpose or accidently .. I'm not sure. I agree that these trees should be protected but I also believe that everyone should have a chance to see, touch and photograph them.
  • CCGAL Sep 3, 2011 @ 12:27 pm | delete
Oh, I totally agree. I'm glad we aren't cutting the remaining old growth forests, but at the same time I'm also glad we still have 3 of the drive through trees. Thank you for the visit!
  • Teddi14 Aug 27, 2011 @ 2:20 pm | delete

Thank you so much! I love my trees and this summer I vowed to go back next year. Hot Hot Hot in Texas. I'm roasted. Sure miss the cool fog and the shade from the trees up there.
  • dannystaple Aug 26, 2011 @ 4:16 am | delete
This is amazing. I'd love to see one of those face to face one day. I'd love to walk under the one with a chimney and look up.
  • CCGAL Sep 3, 2011 @ 12:30 pm | delete
The Shrine Tree is the one with the chimney, but along Highway 101 there are a couple of other chimney trees you can visit. One is just south of Garberville, and it's got a gift shop built right inside the tree. The other is actually called Chimney Tree and it's on the Avenue of the Giants scenic byway. I'm going to go take photos and write about both of those next summer. I hope you get to visit.
  • LadyCharlie Aug 25, 2011 @ 3:20 pm | delete
Wow...great lens. I had no idea those trees were so big!
  • CCGAL Sep 3, 2011 @ 12:33 pm | delete
They are huge, but there are even larger ones that have not had openings in them - there's one famous tree we call "General Sherman" that's in Stout Grove. You drive down an old logging road to reach it, and park in a state maintained paved parking area, then hike in to see it. I should write a page about the General one of these days - I've got photos of it that span my children's lifetimes. Thanks for the idea, and the visit!

It's a shame what people have done to these majestic giants. Just seeing them is a beautiful experience. Don't quite know why people felt they had to cut huge holes through them for recreation. Certainly glad that is no longer being done.

What an awesome lens. I am in Australia, but I visited the Sequoia National Park in 1998 and was amazed by the size of the trees. We did not get to see any drive through trees though as we were there in the snow at the start of spring. I have a photo of me and a Sequoia in my lens "Travel And Adventure"

I have always been fascinated with Redwoods, not only for their immense size, but also for the durability of the wood once harvested. I remember seeing photos of cars driving through these trees when I was a child, and I thought they were Photoshopped! Just kidding. There was NO Photoshop when I was a child, (I had an Etch A Sketch) but I didn't think those were actual photos I saw, because I didn't think trees could get that big!

We were out in California in 1969 and went to see the Wawona Tree in the Mariposa Grove, Yosemite National Park, CA. Imagine our complete dismay when they said it had burned. Oh well, at least we heard a momma bear and saw her 2 cubs.

The cubs showed up in the parking lot and a number of other tourists decided the day shouldn't be a total loss. Since they couldn't see the tree, they'd feed the cubs instead. (Can you say DUMB?)

My husband said we'd better get to the car before the mother got to the parking lot. As we left the parking lot, we heard momma roaring and, moments later, the roars of cars starting.

I remember driving through the Redwood in Northern California but would have no idea which it was because I was about 6 at the time. They are some gorgeous trees though.

Oh I totally read this as "dive" instead of "drive" and I thought, "How on Earth do I do that?" But yes, I've driven through the Giant Redwood. The Redwood Forest is one of my favorite places, and it's the closest thing I'll get to some of the places in World of Warcraft. (I'm a nerd - don't tell!)

Fun lens! I love this area, went there a few years ago, one of the places you MUST see before you die. The drive from San Francisco is not very pleasant, however, it twists, turns and takes many more hours than Mapquest says! Spend at least a day on the trip there and don't rush, you will enjoy yourself more..(especially driving at night through the windy mountains!) I have my own photos of driving through the tree, very fun!

I love this lens! The Redwoods are such a beautiful sight. I found some of these trees to be very touristy but who can blame them? I can proudly say that I have driven my car through a giant Redwood that was damaged by lightning, not carved out for tourists.

You have a wonderful collection of old photos and videos here of the Giant Redwoods. I haven't seen the ones in California, but I have seen the Kauri forests in New Zealand, these are cousins of the Redwoods, and also impressive in their size.
  • bakerwoman Sep 29, 2010 @ 2:57 pm | delete
I was in awe when we visited the Avenue of the Giants in Northern California with redwood trees so tall and wide that we felt like Lilliputians. Fourteen people held hands and went around one tree trunk and we found out there were not enough folks to complete the circle.
This is one place I would visit again. Fun lens.

According to a forester I know, the cut probably weakened the tree and could have killed it, but back then no one was thinking like that--nd those coastal redwood giants are a hearty tree clan (heh, heh) for sure. These forests are among my favorite places on earth and this lens does a beautiful job of telling their story.
  • redroses Sep 17, 2010 @ 2:25 pm | delete
I haven't driven through one, but I have seen Sequoias when I visited California some years ago. Are sequojas the same as redwoods? We could all get in the hole in the middle for a great group shot. It seemed to be a natural phenomenon. But even though we were told that these are the highest trees in the world, we thought that some of our Gippsland old growth trees in Australia were possibly bigger, except there aren't many left.

Seeing the Redwoods is definitely on our places to visit list and we may even settle down there when we get done traveling. But rather than driving thru a tree, I'd rather just sit down in the middle of it and feel the energy. Wonderful lens about these special trees. Congrats on LOTD and lensrolling to Save the Tree Spirit.
  • Heather426 Sep 16, 2010 @ 2:55 pm | delete
congrats on LOTD! I have been to both of the forests, the one in Yosemite and the ones up north in California. Actually I saw the one in Yosemite before it went down. They are so magnificent!

Congrats! I did the drive through the redwood forest with my sister a few years back and we loved it. Incredible trees. We drove through the tree pictured (in our rental car...yikes). These trees are treasures and everyone should see them. Pictures just do not do them justice. You must stand beneath them and look up and you feel so tiny. Thanks! Great lens!
  • ShirlW Sep 16, 2010 @ 2:12 pm | delete
Stopping by again to say congratulations on a well deserving LotD!

  • kiwisoutback Sep 16, 2010 @ 1:37 pm | delete
I have driven through one of the Giant Redwoods, I believe it was Shrine Tree. The cars are so much bigger now that not all cars can fit through the hole. Congratulations on LOTD!

Congrats on LotD - very nice collection of "drive through trees". It is really sad that there are only 3 left in the world. They sure are very impressive in person.

CCGal: Congrats on your LOTD with this lens, one of my very favorite on Squidoo. But for some reason, I was thinking this had already been an LOTD. Maybe it just looked too good not to be.... :-)

  • ddixonart Sep 15, 2010 @ 5:51 pm | delete
I never have - always been on the east coast...but this lens is terrific! Love all the old photos!
  • Lisa-Marie-Mary Sep 15, 2010 @ 1:19 pm | delete
Love this lens! Lots of information about these amazing trees. I had no idea that there were so many of them carved out, to begin with - very interesting!!
  • reasonablerobinson Sep 15, 2010 @ 1:54 am | delete
Ever since I was kid and read about these trees I've wanted to do this. So the next time I'm in the USA I'm definitely giving it a go. We have nothing like this in the UK except for botanical specimens in parks. My local forest is Sherwood Forest (Robin Hood) and the biggest thing there is and old oak tree called The Major Oak.
  • AlaskaHydro Sep 14, 2010 @ 12:11 pm | delete
No drive through but, I did visit The Sequoia National Forest on a road trip across the states.
  • LindaJM Sep 13, 2010 @ 1:58 pm | delete
I've been through trees (can't remember if I drove or walked.) I didn't know there was one in Klamath - and will check it out next time I'm in the area!
  • partybuzz Sep 13, 2010 @ 12:27 pm | delete
I would love to see a giant redwood! I remember receiving a postcard with the drive-through redwood on it years aga and was fascinated by it. Great lens!

Glad my zazzle lens was helpful. I have been through the redwood trees you drive through as a child in the seventies. We took a trip up the coast of California from southern Ca where I grew up in Orange County. Love this lens! 5 * and faved
  • a_willow Aug 16, 2009 @ 4:48 am | delete
Beautiful pictures on interesting topic! I think I've never seen that big tree! Blessed by an Angel!
  • BarbRad Aug 7, 2009 @ 10:37 pm | delete
I'm sure I have, but it was long ago, so I'm not sure which one it was. I think it was in Sequoia or Kings Canyon in about 1985. But we've also camped at Prairie Creek among the redwoods there and in the Jedediah Smith State Park, so we've been in that part of the state, as well. I love the Redwood country.
  • AdrienneJenkins Aug 5, 2009 @ 11:46 pm | delete

Truly Amazing! Wow....I am drawn into two directions: What a wonderful experience to be able to drive through a tree, but on the other hand on a spiritual note, it saddens me that such a acient tree would be cut into. Thats just me though, I can only imagine what the energy feels like driving through the tree. Great work putting this lens together.
  • flipflopnana Jul 12, 2009 @ 4:17 pm | delete
Wonderful lens on some amazing trees! I really enjoyed the photos and videos.

Thanks for rolling by /www.squidoo.com/himbook">the Free HIMbook. . . I love the Coastal redwoods myself . . . I have so many beautiful memories of seeing them on family vacations, and there is a stand of them in Golden Gate Park that I love . . . they are my outdoor cathedral. I look forward to seeing some of these giants someday, and kneel down in that arch made by God . . .
  • blue22d Jul 3, 2009 @ 3:46 pm | delete
I love this lens.....native Californian that I am and I have been to visit the trees many times. The Redwoods (there are some in Japan) are wonderful creations of our Lord. I stand in the center of them and just am over whelmed by their size and beauty.
  • vbright105 Jun 29, 2009 @ 4:30 am | delete
I think it would be cool. I think it would be a lot like driving thru the granite tunnels on the Needles highway in the Black Hills. Very cool
  • qlcoach Jun 28, 2009 @ 6:08 pm | delete
Yeah, love the Red Woods and Crescent City too. The Eby Way rates your lens 5 stars. Best wishes for our success.

Thank you for sharing this. I've been to several National Parks, including the Grand Canyon, but haven't had the opportunity to visit Yosemite yet and see the Giant Redwoods. It is on my 'bucket list'! I think these are magnificent trees and I want to experience them in person.
  • MarinaKuperman Jun 12, 2009 @ 1:29 pm | delete
What a great lens. I lived in Cali, but never made it so north. I regret is so much, because now i'm in Costa Rica and don't have any idea when I'll make it up there. But i will.
I loved the postcards and learning all about this place:)
    Fav'd, fived, fanned you:)

You mentioned the Yosemite tree. We were the first to find out the that the tree had fallen. As we were driving up to the site, we came across a member of a road crew diriving a front end loader. He had tears in his eyes and when we asked what was wrong, he said "The tree is down." This is a day I will never forget!

  • totosmom Nov 11, 2008 @ 7:11 pm | delete
I too have been fortunate enough to see these amazing trees. I have to be in awe of something that has survived as long as they have and still maintained their dignity. How many humans can do that????

    Great Job!
  • Margo_Arrowsmith Nov 11, 2008 @ 6:00 pm | delete
I have wanted to do this ever since I first saw it in the Weekly Reader a whole lot of years ago.
  • Rebecca Nov 11, 2008 @ 5:09 pm | delete
Beautiful lens! Very entertaining and informative. I am on the side of the trees. Let's leave them be and appreciate their beauty. Any controversy about this reminds me of the cave wars in the 1920's in Kentucky around Mammoth Cave. All of these beautiful offshoots of that great big cave were opened as tourist spots and systematically destroyed. I don't want that to happen to the trees!

I planted a redwood in my back yard years ago even though it is not the best soil for them. It grew very slowly for years but the past two years it has taken off! They are gorgeous trees and I really love mine.
