Summer Fun at the Drive In

How did you spend your summer evenings when you were younger? Many of my friends and I spent our summer evenings at the drive in with family and friends. It seems as though each of us has a story of how our parents made a bunch of popcorn, dressed us in our pj's and crammed us in the station wagon to watch movies at the drive in. There are also memories of friends from school piling into the biggest car available and spending a night at the movies. Everybody has a story from the drive in.

Your drive in visit

Things to remember

Meadow Lake Drive In Theatre Sign

When you visit the drive in there are several things to remember for you trip and while your there. Its a different experience from your normal visit to the theatre. Here are some things to remember.
1. Get there early.
Since the movies don't start until it is dark make sure you get there before its dark so that you can choose a good place to park. You'll also
need time to set up your area.
2. Bring along some lawnchairs and blankets.
You'll want something comfortable to sit on while your at the drive in. And remember just because it was 80 degrees early in the day it won't
be that warm after dark.
3. Bring bug spray
Mosquitos come out at night and if it has rained recently they can be vicious.
4. Bring some goodies to munch on.
A cooler full of your favorite snacks is mandatory. But don't forget to visit the concession stand. The concession stand is the way that the drive-in theatre makes money. No money! No drive-ins!
5. Bring a radio with batteries.
Most drive ins use fm stations to broadcast the movies.

Interesting things to know about Drive-In Theatres

A short history of the drive-in theatre

1930's drive-in theatre

2008 marked the 75th anniversary of the first drive-in theater built in Camden, NJ. It opened on June 6, 1933. Many thanks to Richard Hollingshead Jr. for coming up with the concept of the drive-in theater.

It is said Richard Hollingshead Jr.'s motive was to sell more auto products. After all, that is what Richard Hollingshead did for a living back in the 1930s. And, he theorized, the best way to do this was to establish a place where people could park their cars, enjoy a meal, and watch a movie outdoors.

1933, Richard Hollingshead Jr opens first drive-in in Camden New Jersey

1941, RCA develops the in-car speaker

1949, Drive-In Movie Association lobbies against daylight savings movement

1950, In-car heaters allow many drive-ins to stay open year-round

1958, Drive-in count reaches it height with over 4,000 drive-ins

During the 1970's and 1980's drive-in theatres still remained popular but their decline began. Then in the 1990's, with soaring property values drive-in theatres began disappearing more rapidly. Currently, there are fewer than 500 drive-in theatres left nationwide.

The Drive in in Pop Culture

Movie clips of the drive-in

All of us have seen movies with scenes at the drive in. Here are a few of my favorites.

1. Grease-The Drive-in movie scenes were shot at the Burbank Pickwick Drive-In (it was closed and torn down in 1989 and a shopping center took its place).
2. The Outsiders-The Outsiders was filmed in Tulsa, OK. The Admiral Twin is the Drive-In used in the scene where Ponyboy and Cherry meet. The theatre was struck by a fire and is currently under reconstruction.
3. Pee Wee's Big Adventure-Pee Wee's Big Adventure was filmed at The Studio Drive-in in Culver City, CA.
4. Back to the Future 3-The drive-in theater was constructed specifically for this film. It was built in Monument Valley, and demolished immediately after filming. No films were ever screened there.

What is the Future of the Drive in?

Graveyard or Outdoor Movies?

Kid at the Drive-inMany drive-in theatre owners have decided that selling their property to developers is a better investment than the theatre itself. While there are a few drive-ins reopening that were once closed, many more drive-ins are closed. Most people do seem to enjoy watching a movie under the stars. So outdoor movies and in some cases guerilla drive-in's have become an alternative. Many cities have outdoor movies in the park. You can rent an inflatable screen and show outdoor movies in your yard. Guerilla movies involve groups of people meeting and showing movies on building walls these are often secret because they aren't paying the movie industry for showing the movie. These parties are great fun even though they aren't quite on the legal side.

I guess I prefer the drive-in over these other alternatives. And there are alot of reasons for this. First I have alot of pleasant memories at the drive-in. Second, they are small business owners and I really do believe we should support our local businesses. They create jobs in our communities and bring people together for a shared experience. But the most important reason is I just love the whole setting. I always have a good time.

Buffalo, NY - We have a wonderful, 4 screen drive-in, the "Transit Drive-In" that has been well taken care of and just the best. My out of town friends love to take the 20 min. ride to re-live the days of outdoor movies. We are spoiled here. The "Buffalo Drive-In" was leveled last year but the Transit Drive-In is here to stay for a long time, thanks to the owners.
