Driving in Mexico

In the U.S., a trip from coast to coast means coverage of huge driving distances. Mexico has coasts that lay much closer together than the coasts of the U.S. The eastern coast of Mexico does not feel the waves of the Atlantic Ocean; its beaches are washed by waters from the Gulf of Mexico. That's why when driving in Mexico, the distance between the east and west coast of Mexico is far less than the distance between the east and west coast of the United States.

Navigating Mexico By Car or RV

A look at a map reveals a second fact, a fact well known to Mexican tourists faced with driving distances. Mexico is like an inverted triangle. One drive across Mexico shows it is much wider in the north than it is in the south. A coast to coast trip covers an ever shorter distance.

Still U.S. residents must realize that any road trip they want to take south of the border will entail driving distances. Mexico touches the U.S. at its northern border, the place where the two coasts are furthest apart. A resident of El Paso, TX who wants to drive their car to Mazatlan must plan to cover a distance of 2000 km.

Why would a resident of El Paso undertake coverage of such driving distances? Mexico, tourists have discovered, has a very popular beach awaiting there in Mazatlan. Besides, a drive in Mexico south just another 492 km. should take any tourist to Puerto Vallarta, an equally popular vacation spot on the Pacific coast.

Still a tourist from Brownsville, TX seldom meets a tourist from El Paso at either of those popular beaches. That's because tourists driving in Mexico from eastern Texas tend to go to the beaches on the Yucatan Peninsula. There they can enjoy the waters of the Caribbean.

Some historians have traveled west from the Yucatan Peninsula, covering sizeable driving distances. Mexico has historic landmarks both on the Yucatan Peninsula and west of there, in Mexico City. By traveling west from the Yucatan Peninsula, an historian can visit various spots where ancient Mexican peoples once established a community.

Today's tourists stare at the relics from that civilization. Some tourists enjoy the exhibited relics only after covering long and difficult driving distances.
