Driving Instructor Qualifying Exams
The 3 parts of the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) qualifying exams
(Part 1) Theory Test - a multiple choice theory test and a computer based hazard perception test
(Part 2) Test of Driving Ability- a driving test at an advanced level
(Part 3) Test of Instructional Ability - a practical test of ability to teach
Each part must be passed before the next one can be taken (i.e. part 1 first, followed by part 2 and then part 3).
Parts 2 and 3 must be passed within a two year time limit from the date that the part 1 was passed (e.g. if Part 1 is passed on 1st April 2009, there is then a two year limit ending on 31st March 2011 in which to train for and pass both part 2 and part 3.)
If parts 2 and 3 are not both passed within this two year limit, then the registration and qualification process starts all over again from the very beginning!

Essentials
Essential Books For Trainee Driving Instructors
ESSENTIAL Books For Driving Instructors!
Books considered by many driving instructors to be essential aids to their job
There are two books that many driving instructors consider "must haves"!
These two books have a scope that's beyond "just" driving instructor training, as they lay down the principles of good driving and teaching that every driving instructor must use on a daily basis.
The two essential driving instructor training books are;
The Official DSA Guide to Driving: the Essential Skills
The Official DSA Guide to Driving: the Essential Skills is literally an ESSENTIAL book for all driving instructors...
A copy of The Official DSA Guide to Driving: the essential skills is a wise investment for every trainee driving instructor, as this book describes the methods and style of driving you will be required to demonstrate on your Part 2 Test of Driving Ability and throughout your career as a driving instructor.
Most good driving instructors have a well-thumbed copy of The Official DSA Guide to Driving: the essential skills in their glovebox!

The Official DSA Guide to Driving: the essential skills (Paperback)

by the Driving Standards Agency
The only official industry standard driving manual from DSA, the Driving Standards Agency.
There is no other comparable, comprehensive, official product available on the market.
The Official DSA Guide to Driving: the essential skills, is ideal for all drivers, whether you're a learner, experienced driver or instructor, it promotes safe driving skills and helps to improve overall driving techniques.
The Driving Instructor's Handbook
The Driving Instructor's Handbook is widely considered to be an "industry bible" for driving instructors
The Driving Instructor's Handbook is the "other essential book" that every driving instructor should have.
This book is invaluable for potential (trainee) driving instructors and fully qualified approved driving instructors alike!

The Driving Instructor's Handbook (Paperback)

(Paperback)
by John Miller (Author), Margaret Stacey (Author)
Publisher: Kogan Page Ltd; 16th Edition edition (3 July 2011)
"This book could perhaps be described as the 'bible' for our industry. It doesn't matter if you are just starting out on the rocky road to becoming a driving instructor, or whether you have been driving this road for ten years or more, you should have an up-to-date copy of this book." - Association of Driving Instructors News
"An up-to-date copy of The Driving Instructor's Handbook is as essential for a fully qualified instructor as it is for those seeking to pass the ADI qualifying examinations." - John Lepine, MBE, General Manager, The Motor Schools Association
"Covers everything an aspiring instructor needs to know." - Driving School News
ADI Part 1
ADI Part 1 Training Books & Software
Driving Instructor Exams - ADI Part 1 - Theory Test Training
Books, PC software, interactive DVD's and other training materials for the ADI Part 1 exam - the Theory and Hazard Perception test
The Theory Test for driving instructors is similar to the one used for learner drivers - the Hazard Perception test is identical, but there are twice as many theory based multiple choice questions (100 questions for driving instructors as opposed to 50 for learner drivers!).
Both parts of the test are carried out on a touch screen computer.
If you intend to use software products for your training, you'll find that much of the content of many of these books is often included in commercial software training packages, e.g. full versions of the Highway Code.
That said, the advantage of Theory Test books is that some of them are extremely cheap, they can be used for reference or revision anywhere, at any time and you'll probably want to have standard books like the Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs with you in your car for reference purposes when you start teaching anyway, so you'll probably end up buying at least those two at some point!
The disadvantage of books is that they can ONLY prepare you for the multiple choice section of the Theory Test (ADI Part 1) - you'll also need Hazard Perception test software or an interactive DVD to practice for the Hazard Perception part.
Theory Test Books
Study books for Part 1 of the driving instructor qualifying exams - the Theory Test
As I've already said above, books can ONLY help you study for the multiple choice part of the Theory Test. You'll need additional software or an interactive DVD to familiarise yourself with and practice for the Hazard Perception part of the ADI Part 1 test - for a selection of tried and tested Hazard Perception products see the next section.

The Official Highway Code [Illustrated] (Paperback)

[Illustrated] (Paperback)
by Department for Transport (Author), Driving Standards Agency (Author), HMSO (Editor)
Essential reading for all road users in England, Scotland and Wales. This latest edition of the only official Highway Code contains the very latest rules of the road. Many of these rules are legal requirements and must be adhered to, in order to avoid penalty fines, penalty points, disqualification or even prison. The rules also include a reference to the legislation that creates the offence. The Official Highway Code reflects the latest legislation that road users must adhere to, advice on road safety and best practice.

Know Your Traffic Signs (Driving Skills) (Paperback)

(Paperback)
by Department for Transport (Author)
This handy reference title illustrates and explains the vast majority of traffic signs that a road user is likely to encounter. A thorough knowledge of all traffic signs is essential for all road users, not just new drivers or riders. Although The Official Highway Code contains most of the commonly used road signs which are prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations, it does not give a comprehensive explanation of our signing system. This is therefore a perfect complimentary title to The Official Highway Code.

Theory Test Extra: the Official DSA Guide [Illustrated] (Paperback)

[Illustrated] [Paperback)
by Driving Standards Agency (Author)
Brand new official guide from the Driving Standards Agency, which contains all the information you need to pass the multiple choice part of your driving theory test. Perfect for study when you re away from home, this handy guide covers every subject you could be tested on, in a narrative format. The title also contains two sample revision tests so you can practise and test your knowledge.
Combined Theory & Hazard Perception Test PC Software
PC software for the Theory & Hazard Perception test
There are other similar products on the market, but Driving Test Success All Tests 2012 Edition is widely regarded and recommended by many driving instructors as an excellent product. It incorporates the ADI question bank for the Theory Test, as well as the learner driver questions, making it ideal for driving instructor training (and you can lend it to your future pupils for their own test preparation afterwards as it also covers the Theory Test for learner drivers!).
I used Driving Test Success myself to pass Part 1 of the ADI qualifying exams and so did all of the instructors who work for my driving school, so this definitely gets the thumbs up from us!

ADI Part 2
ADI Part 2 Training Books & Software
Driving Instructor Exams - ADI Part 2 - Test of Driving Ability
Training materials for the ADI Part 2 Test of Driving Ability
For the ADI Part 2 Test of Driving Ability, you need to demonstrate that you can drive to an advanced level, so training for this part is primarily based around professional practical training.
The best way of supplementing this (as I've already said in the "Essential Books" section) is to buy yourself a copy of The Official DSA Guide to Driving: the essential skills, read and inwardly digest everything it says...then put what you learn into practice during training sessions with your ADI trainer!

ADI Part 3
ADI Part 3 Training Books & Software
Driving Instructor Exams - ADI Part 3 - Test of Instructional Ability
Training materials for the last (and hardest) part of the ADI exams - Part 3, the Test of Instructional Ability
For the ADI Part 3 Instructional Ability test, you will be tested on the quality of your instruction and your ability to pass your knowledge on to pupils.
You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge and ability by giving practical driving instruction to a senior grade driving examiner, who will first take on the role of a pupil who is a beginner, or a learner driver with limited driving knowledge, and then a pupil who is about test standard.
For Part 3 you will need PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AND LOTS OF IT (sorry for shouting - but I can't emphasise the need to train properly for Part 3 enough...Parts 1 and 2 are a walk in the park compared to Part 3...)
There are very good study materials you can buy which can help a great deal, but they should be used to supplement, not replace, training by a good ADI Part 3 trainer.
Training Books For ADI Part 3
Books that will help you prepare for Part 3 of the ADI qualifying exams
I've already mentioned The Driving Instructor's Handbook in the "essential books" section, but it's good enough to mention again at this point...along with a couple of others...
