I just have to say thankyou, thankyou so much for the great advice. even just knowing that there are other people like me is such a relief. I have failed four times and im 19 soon and i wish i had the indepedence to drive places whenever i needed to. I barely ever get nervous but because i want my lisence so bad, i put so much pressure on myself. Its all I can think of, i just wish i had my license. this website had helped so much, thankyou.

Hi Kate - Thanks for your nice comments and I'm so glad to know that this page is helpful :)

I think you've summed up the reason why driving test nerves affect so many people when you say you "I put so much pressure on myself"!

It's natural to fear failure, but all too often it's a vicious cycle with the fear CAUSING the failure, and once you realise that, you can stop the cycle.

As I've said already on this page, if your driving instructor thinks you're at test standard then you need not worry about the way you drive not being "good enough" and "all" you then need to do is work on your own frame of mind for the test itself (and I know that's not easy!).

All you need is 100% concentration for the 30-40 minutes of the test, a clear head and most importantly to believe in yourself :)

I wish you success for the next time you take your test and look forward to you coming back here and telling me you've passed! ;)

@ Jess...it's a natural reaction when you've not been successful in something to fear the same will happen again and as I've said elsewhere on this page, once that happens it can turn into a vicious cycle of fear of failure becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy :(

As you're taking your test again today I wish you the BEST of luck - please have faith in your own abilities. The key is to concentrate 100% on the NOW and put what happened on your last test behind you :)

    Fingers crossed for you :D

I failed my test the first time because I was so nervous and made two silly mistakes. the first was on a ring road and I pulled into the right lane, but was far too close to the car behind, forcing him to brake. The second was because I forgot to put my handbrake on at a junction and rolled over. I only got 9 minors apart from that and so would have passed had I not been shaking like a leaf the whole time and made those two mistakes.

I have my second driving test tomorrow and I feel sick just thinking about it. My instructor advised me to take it in my own car since I drive that with my mum everyday, which is what I'm doing. I thought I'd feel a bit more confident having done it once and knowing what to expect but I'm not, I'm terrified. Any advice would be helpful as I get really seriously anxious everytime I think of it and I just know that my nerves are going to fail me again.

Vertical parking? Do you mean parallel parking? If so take a look at How To Parallel Park.

If you need any more help on any of the manoeuvres, please see Driving Test Manoeuvres.

Good luck for your test - I'm rooting for you :)

@ louise - I'm so sorry to hear you're so nervous about taking your test - have you discussed how you feel with your instructor?

As I've said on this page, if your instructor didn't think you drive to the standard required for the test, they wouldn't be letting you take it, so please believe in yourself, you CAN do it!

Have a look around this page at all the strategies I've suggested - and if that doesn't help, I'm told some people find that imagining the examiner naked or sitting on the loo helps to dispell nerves - apparantly doing this makes the test seem a lot less intimidating :)

I know it's a cliche, but think of the fact that you've taken a few tests as "delayed success" - the fact that a pass hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it never will, so good luck and I wish you all the best - I'm rooting for you :)
