Dr. Pereyda is an overcomer

Dr. Pereyda is originally from Arizona, where she grew up within an impoverished community that did not expect students to succeed. However, a few exceptional teachers encouraged Margarita. The tenth of eleven children, she was the only one to graduate high school.

For the determined Margarita Pereyda this was just the start.

"A life lived with integrity - even if it lacks the trappings of fame and fortune is a shinning star in whose light others may follow in the years to come." - Denis Waitley

Doctor M. Pereyda is a dedicated and compassionate scholar

She is wonderfully conscientious and thorough as a Doctor.

Throughout college and graduate school, Margarita Pereyda had to work, take out loans, and apply for scholarships to pay for her education.

A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Medicine with her MD, Dr. Pereyda then matriculated as a specialist in internal medicine at Stanford University.

As an MD she oversaw residents working in area free clinics. Her original plans to be an internist ran into the needs she found herself uniquely qualified to serve as a general practitioner for the least, last, and lost. She completed her specialist studies and taught at Stanford; but now handles all manner of medical issues.

She has stretched beyond even those early opportunities to serve.

A bright and intelligent woman, Dr. Pereyda is an excellent doctor. She is now working in Costa Mesa, California. The OC is well know as being committed to the pursuit of wealth. Margarita Pereyda has instead dedicated her considerable medical skills to helping others.

The recipients of her kind ministries are not only society's hidden down-and-outers. Up-and-outers that have slipped through the cracks after medical problems and layoffs also find help in the SOS clinic where she now both labors and manages as Medical Director.

Struggling Internet entrepreneurs and former Fortune 500 executives that have had reversals sit next to injured migrant workers in the Share Our Selves waiting room.

All receive excellent care.

Do you think Charity and volunteering are for suckers?

What happened to the virtue of selfishness?

For my objectivist friends this is a good place to make a point.

You value the power of the individual and their freedom to make selfish choices. Your reasoning is if we do what is best for ourselves and those we love, others will also benefit as we create and add value. You are concerned that charity is often marketed through guilt and social pressures that amount to extortion.

Let me task you with considering a basic tenet of a free society's value system. In a free market a transaction will not occur unless both parties see a benefit for themselves; increased wealth results from every exchange.

Just as the founders of the United States changed John Locke's "life, liberty, and the pursuit of property" when they inserted it into the Declaration of Independence to an equally Lockeian "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," it would be well to recognize that not all benefits derived from free trade involve property.

One great benefit within volunteering and charity is the sweet taste of giving. The joys that come from a personal choice to give or volunteer keep growing, unlike many pursued pleasures that diminish with repetition.

To those that have experienced it in large doses, philanthropy can be a tremendous pleasure that brings enormous satisfaction.

And it helps others.

How can I support Dr. Pereyda?

Support the Share Our Selves Clinic where she is the Medical Director.

What does this mean to me?

Here are the main points:

* As Dr. Pereyda has demonstrated -- with determination you can succeed; hard work, determination, and a set goal. To these she has chosen to add compassion.

* Not everyone finds happiness in acquisition - perhaps service, support, and volunteering can help you achieve your own personal blend of fulfilling success. You need not limit pleasures to be derived from extensive charity.

* As an individual you can make a difference. No matter where or when you start, it is your subsequent direction of travel that will be most important.

Dr. Margarita Pereyda is an inspiration on many levels; as an overcomer, a scholar, and a dedicated giver.
