drowning pool bodies

From The "SINNER" Album

There have been many hard rock bands over the years that have tried to combine both metal tendencies with a less harsh sound. Some have been successful (AC/DC and Foo Fighters spring to mind here) while others have been less so (whatever happened to Pantera?). With just the right amount of melody infused into their bombastic sound, Dallas band Drowning Pool sits happily between the two.

With a sound not too dissimilar to the likes of 'Enter Sandman'-era Metallica, Drowning Pool consist of Ryan McCombs on lead vocals, C.J. Pierce on guitar and vocals, Stevie Benton on bass and vocals, and Mike Luce on drums and vocals. With a checkered history (original lead singer Dave Williams died from heart problems in 2002 and their song 'Bodies' was deemed inappropriate, following the 2001 Twin Towers attacks and the subsequent bodies falling from the sky in an attempt to escape the damaged buildings), their music is raw and intense, as their various albums will testify.

Bursting onto the scene in 2001 with their debut release 'Sinner', Drowning Pool are one of the few bands that can transfer their live energy onto CD. Songs like the afore-mentioned 'Bodies', as well as other tracks like 'Tear Away', showed not only a hard-rocking outfit, but also one that knew how to incorporate hooks melodic enough to attract a less hardcore crowd.

However, it was to be a full three years before a follow up, the aptly named 'Desensitized'. With their original singer's death still having repercussions, it was perhaps natural that this second album was a darker and heavier effort. With new vocalist Jason Jones on board, it was less immediate than their debut, and songs like 'Love And War' and 'Step Up' required more listening to fully appreciate them.

For reasons not quite fully explained, where the band should have been building on their growing reputation and endorsement from none other than Ozzy Osbourne, they parted company with Jones in 2005, and a new voice in the shape of former SoiL front man Ryan McCombs came on board.

Although still to release a full-length album with McCombs, the result of the new sound can be heard on the soundtrack CD to the movie 'Saw III', where the Drowning Pool track 'No More' can be found. Keeping the same intense edge that the two CD's released so far have shown, yet with a more melodic and open approach, the new album from the band is due later this year, with the tentative title 'Full Circle'. Currently on a widespread tour of the UK, it would seem that Drowning Pool's popularity is about to be finally recognized.
