Drug Addiction - The Facts You May Need To Know
Don't Become Addict Through Ignorance
Once you are hooked on drugs it is no longer a social choice of whether to have them again or not. The drugs make changes in the brain which seem to bring with it a compulsion to take the drugs again. This may be termed the difference between a habit (social choice) and an addiction.
There are grades of behavioural urges of course. Some of the "softer" drugs may be termed a habit. Taking softer drugs such as hashish will be more of a conscious choice rather than an absolute need to take it.
The "harder" drugs such as heroin fall into the category of an addiction. This is where the brain creates an urge, a need or a craving to take the drug again.
The "harder" drugs therefore trap someone into a circle of taking the drug, and as the effects wear off, an urge to take them again.
Damage to the mind and body can result from taking any form of drug. Even prescriptive drugs have side-effects.
Don't fool yourself that a "soft" drug habit is any better than a "hard" drug addiction. The comparison is a bit like deciding the difference between bad apple and a rotten orange. Both are not healthy. Indeed long term use of "soft" drugs may lead to paranoia, free floating anxiety and the development of phobias.
The best decision is to never take them in the first place. If you are taking drugs already, of any sort, to make a decision to stop and vitally to make sure you have the necessary support in place before you stop.

- Hi Alfiesgirl
I appreciate you stopping by and leaving your comments. I think you are "spot on" about the term "drug-addict". I have used it on this lens because some people who are seeking support for an addiction will use those terms and search google etc using that label. However, I don't like labels as it can keep a person trapped and perceiving themselves as the problem, when the real problem is the urge or behaviour and not the person. I think it healthier to refer to a "drug addiction" rather than a "drug addict".
As for your thoughts about cravings and urges towards other matters including chocolate, the internet etc, in my view, it is when this becomes an unwanted obsession that it is unhealthy.
Best wishes
Steve

- Hmm you have certainly given food for thought ..although i have to disagree somewhat as to your choice of words..such as drug-addict for one!..after all most of us have or will be drug addicts at some stage of our lives as the term "drug" simply means something which one has a passion for in fact, something which gives us that "feel-good" factor and not necessarily illegal nor bad for our brains..untill onebecomes addicted that is..so be it heroin, cocaine, sex, chocolate or the internet..indeed a lot of visitors to my lens openly admit to being "Squidaholics" and "internet junkies", truth of the matter is, if it gives us a buzz and we crave it,.it becomes a drug and we addicts. Still i enjoyed your lens albeit im seeming to "knock" it..i just think that this subject should be fully explained if its to be of use to an addict rather than seeming a good read for those that arn't..i'm linking my own lens to this one and hope you take a look at it http://www.squidoo.com/areyouajunky Tina x

- I've too heard that there have been relevant studies conducted surrounding the connection between hypnosis and drug addiction. Though in a sense that would mean that by using the different mind tools available under hypnotherapy, an addict's mental structure can be altered in such a way that he or she may not feel the urge to use a substance any longer. Not to assume that this method is ineffective, but I haven't come across enough sufficient scientific reports or solid documentation that can support such a claim indefinitely. I will say that hypnosis has in fact been found to be beneficial in relieving pain sensation. Therefore, it is logical to say that offering an addict an effective intervention at the time of withdrawal symptoms can decrease those symptoms enough to complete treatment, or even cure cases of people suffering from symptoms brought on by PTSD.

- Good lens - -thans for sharing. For less severe addictions it is possible to be treated in an outpatient program, provided the user has a strong support system in place and is closely monitored by a doctor.
