Drum Corps Is Marching Band At The Extreme!

While I was never able to participate in Drum Corps International (DCI) as a youth I have been a very devoted follower each summer of the DCI Summer Music Games circuit.  DCI is an international organization of competitive drum and bugle corps (marching bands without the woodwinds) that perform in dozens of cities across the United States each night of the summer months.  This page is intended to spur a little interest in the genre and to show you a little of what is happening each week.  Please note that I am NOT affiliated with the DCI although I truly wish I was.

I was recently fowarded a link to a blog post by Joe Dacey that I believe is the beginning of a very timely and interesting examination of the interplay between competition and education. He examines DCI as well as traditional marching band and attempts to make some enlightened conclusions:

Recently I have been thinking about the competition aspect of the marching activity and trying to draw on some of my ideas and experience to meditate upon whether this improves the activity or hurts it.
