Travel to Drumheller, Alberta, Canada and Visit the Dinosaur Capital of the World!

Our camping vacation to Drumheller, Alberta in 2005 was the best, most memorable holiday for my kids. They were 9, 12, 14 and 16 at the time and they loved everything we did. It was relaxing. The scenery was incredible. And the major attractions of Drumheller were phenomenal.

The kids especially loved:

1. The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology

2. Reptile World

3. The World's Largest Dinosaur

4. The Little Church

They also loved the camping, the go-karts, the weather, hiking in the hilly terrain and learning about dinosaurs.

It can be a great vacation for you too, if you're looking for a unique camping location with lots of fun and learning opportunities!

Read on to learn about these elements and more about Drumheller, Alberta, the dinosaur capital of the world.

All About Drumheller

Where is Drumheller?

Drumheller is located in the Canadian Badlands in Southern Alberta. It's about 1 1/2 hours north of Calgary and about 2 1/2 hours south of Edmonton, the capital (where we live). This map shows it in more detail.

The Badlands

What are the "Badlands"? In general, the Badlands are areas of severe erosion, usually in a semi-arid climate. They're characterized by formations like ridges, coulees and hoodoos and usually have sparse vegetation due to the climate. The pictures here show these characteristics.

Wikipedia explains how the term originated.

The Hoodoos

"A hoodoo . . . is a tall, thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland. Hoodoos are compsed of soft sedimentary rock and are topped by a piece of harder, less easily-eroded stone that protects the column from the elements" (Wikipedia).

The World's Largest Dinosaur

This is a model Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex) that is 82 feet high and 151 feet long! You can walk up the stairs to the mouth and view the scenery from there! Learn more about the World's Largest Dinosaur here.

And the Littlest Church

This isn't a place where there are lots of things to do, but it's a Drumheller attraction and a great place to check out. Learn a bit about the Little Church here.

Camping in Drumheller

We stayed at Dinosaur Trail RV Resort, but there are lots of choices for camping in Drumheller. Find a list of campgrounds here. As you can tell from the picture, my daughter Stephanie thinks camping is fun in Drumheller!

Drumheller's Famous Go-Karts

The kids had a blast speeding around in their go-karts. I even loved it - - although I wanted to be a race car driver when I was little. Actually, my sons remember how much I loved it and suggested that we go go-karting as a family activity again soon!

The Drumheller Passion Play

We didn't see the passion play when we were in Drumheller, but it's one of the most famous attractions there. Check out the passion play site to learn more.

We went through Drumheller on our way to the west coast. It was one of those places I would like to go back and spend some time. It has a different kind of beauty than the rest of the country.

This looks fantastic. We are just enjoying our Dinosaur Discovery project at the moment; better not show the kids as otherwise we'll be booking the flights tomorrow!

What a fun lens this is. There are badlands in North Dakota and South Dakota, too. I think they are really awesome. Sort of like mini Grand Canyons! There is no possible way I would ever go up the steps to the mouth of that dinosaur - way to high for me!
