If you want to learn how to play the drums start with some basics. If you want to be proficient in your playing, as in all things, you must understand the basics. Learning to read drum music is not really hard at all. All it's going to take is a little bit of time and energy. Understanding timing and patterns is essential to any drummer. Remember, as the drummer you are the one responsible for holding the beat, setting the beat and maintaining the rhythm. You are the backbone and hold the most important job of a band member. If the beat falters the group falters. Learning the basics of reading music is a must for any musician, and for the drummer it's essential. You've picked a perfect instrument now take the time and learn how to read music and perfect your craft.

Explore all genres

Become well rounded

Do not limit yourself in trying only one kind or playing one type of music. This totally lowers your learning capability, as well as dangerously limiting you to only one small corner of the musical world. Learn how to play drums in jazz, rock and roll, reggae and in other forms of contemporary music. Practice different kinds of music using your drums, no matter how simple the beat may be, you are sure to learn the different variations in different themes for different tunes. In addition, the potential for you to create your very own beats later on is improved when you explore different genres of music.

Practice makes perfect

If you want to be good you gotta do it

Practice in short bursts of time rather than practicing continuously for a long time. You don't want to burn yourself out by trying to do too much too soon.

The only way to be good at anything is to practice. Simple but true, if you want to be the best then that means putting in the time. Make your practice sessions productive and fun. A great way to start is by working on your rudiments and stick technique.

The paradiddle or double roll are great ones to start with. Keep your practice sessions short, about 45 minutes. You don't want to burn yourself out by trying to do too much. Pay close attention to your hand technique, grip and force with which you strike the drums.

Practice slowly and methodically with proper technique. Don't worry about speed and trying to be fast around the kit. This is a common problem and trap drummers occasionally fall in to:trying to drum fast.

Repetition in a must

Do it over and over again

Engrave every beat in your head. Strike the drums firm and deliberately. Practice and practice some more, until you reach the level where not only does your head remember the beat, but so do your arms and legs, as if they could play the beat on their own automatically. This is because even if you manage to play it smoothly for now, if you try practicing another beat the next time, chances are you'll actually forget some of the parts of the beat that you had practiced before. Repetition helps with this.

Don't get tired of practicing the same beat, even if you feel that you don't need to memorize it. Repetition is the mother of skill so repeat often an engrain the beats in your mind. This will build mind and muscle memory. If you want to learn how to play the drums and sound like a pro, you must take time out and practice. Set aside a small amount of time at least four or five days a week for practice.
