This is the ultimate alternative to in-water dockage! Rather than keeping your boat in the water where the bottom will get dirty, try dry stack storage. We call our service "The In/Out Service", this is also called dry rack storage. Who are we? Rockvam Boat Yards, Inc. in Spring Park Minnesota, on Lake Minnetonka!

With our service, the customer calls one-hour ahead of time and we take the boat out of the warehouse via forklift and launch into the lake. They use the boat for the day, then when they ware done, we haul out and put in the warehouse. It's great because you don't get the algae or scum build up, no sun fading and no wave damage!

We started our In/Out Service back in 1983, but actually we tried in 1967... however, it was an idea ahead of it's time. We were ready, but there just wasn't demand, so we put the program on hold. Our marina pioneered this type of boat storage in the Upper-Midwest and our owner Jerry Rockvam was recently inducted into the North Central Marine Association (NCMA) because of his pioneering efforts!

FAQ's about Dry Stack Boat Storage

The number one question... have you ever dropped a boat? NO. The hydraulics of the forks on the lift make it nearly impossible. After that whole unsinkable Titanic thing... the boating industry never says "impossible" but in 50 years we haven't lost one... however, we have driven a couple forklifts in the lake.

The most recent one was 2009 during National Marina Day. OH that was no fun at all. Imagine this, the forecast was for big storms, so we tried to be proactive by puling all of our rental pontoon boats out of the water. That way we could avoid having to vacuum the rain soaked carpeting in an 8am rush! Well, the forklift went in the water, and 80 people were standing on shore wondered how the heck they were going to cruise the beautiful waters of Lake Minnetonka when the pontoons were in the warehouse!!! UGHHH thank goodness our back-up forklift did the trick and everyone enjoyed the day, well, except the mechanics that spent all day Saturday drying out the engine on the forklift!

Does everyone use forklifts? Nope, we do and we run them into the water. Many places use a travel lift, some will use a forklift but go to the edge of a platform then lower the boat into the water.

How high do the racks go? We go three high, but some marina's in Florida go SEVEN!

How long does it take to launch a boat? Well... it depends on where it's located, but usually less than 10 minutes to safely launch it. We ask for a one-hour notice, and that helps us if there are 5 people that called ahead of you for a launch!

What does the future look like for Dry Stack? There is a marina in South America that uses a credit card pass code system to launch the boats by robot and crane! How cool is that!
