The Beginnings...
Early Bands
After moving to Daytona Beach, FL in 1957, Duane and brother Gregg began playing publicly throughout the Southeast with the Allman Joys. They cut some sides for Dial Records before being released and moving to California.Listen to clips of The Allman Joys tracks.
Moving to Los Angeles in 1967, Duane and Gregg had formed The Hour Glass with future Fame Studios and Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section members Johnny Sandlin, Pete Carr and Paul Hornsby. Signing a contract with Liberty Records and soon opening for the likes of The Doors and Buffalo Springfield, the band languished in Southern California under label constraints. After two unsuccesful albums and their record label's rejection of some new studio tracks, the band broke up. Listen to clips of The Hour Glass tracks.Duane then moved to Jacksonville, FL and began jamming with the 31st of December, which include future Allman Brothers Band drummer, Butch Trucks. That was enough to have brother Gregg Allman come back from California and start forming a new band.

I SA THE ALLMAN BROTHERS WITH DUANE ON MARCH 30 TH - APRIL 1 ST 1970 AT WINTERS END FESTIVAL IN WINTER PARK FLORIDA . I WAS EVEN INTERVEIWED BY THE LOCAL NEWSPAPER. THIS DATE IS HOWEVER NOT LISTED ON THE ALLMAN BROS. WEBSITE. ONE OF US IS WRONG AND I DON'T THINK A YANKEE IN 1970 COULD HAVE IMAGENED DUANE ALLMAN. HE WAS LIKE CRACK COCAINE. I WAS HOOKED ON HIS 1 ST SOLO.

Thanks for the lens. I can't think of anyone who played with more soul than Duane Allman. It's good to make folks more aware of great music. Most of my guitar students have never heard of him!

Very nice tribute to a talented musician who left the world too soon.
Duane Allman's Gravesite
Spend A Minute And Pay Respect
Duane Allman is intered at theRose Hill Cemetery in Macon, GA. I've been several times and always try to make it there every time I'm in Macon. Rose Hill is an old, very serene cemetery and a very nice side trip. Duane and Berry Oakley are right next to each other. It's always nice to go pay some quiet respect.
Several years ago, the first few times I went you could walk right up to the graves. There was always evidence that someone had been there recently: small personal tokens of respect and remembrance, often, small pebbles from around the site had been arranged on the top to spell out "we love you" or "miss you". But there was, unfortunately some vandalism and the area is cordoned off. Now you have to stand back a bit. But it's still worth the trip. There's a great vibe there. Please just be respectful.
