Physician Insurers Association of America Introduces New Logo
Rockville, MD - January 3, 2008 - The Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA), a national association of healthcare provider-owned and/or -operated medical professional liability insurance companies, today unveiled its new logo. The new logo consists of two elements: the rod of Asclepius-an ancient Greek symbol traditionally associated with medicine-and the letters "PIAA," now in a new type font, for a more contemporary look that reflects the Association's expanded role in member education, legislative advocacy, healthcare provider risk management, and patient safety.

Based in Redmond, Washington, with a branch office in Windsor, Connecticut (a suburb of Hartford), Prime Advisors is owned by its employees and directors. Prime Advisors, Inc. is a Federally Registered Investment Advisor under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940.

duane castles: In 1981, the Vermont Legislature passed the Special Insurer Act which was designed to provide a unique and attractive statutory framework for captive formation. These landmark regulations have become the model of captive regulation.

Worse yet, as malpractice insurance became too expensive or unavailable altogether, many physicians began limiting their practice or stopped practicing entirely. For example, the insurance crisis meant many rural areas lacked access to any OB/GYN services.

duane castles - Chairman: Present: Playing a Vital Role in the Industry - CICA's expanding membership is a tribute to its growing number of educational offerings and its efforts to keep top professionals informed of the latest developments or challenges in the industry. The CICA International Conference and the CICA Fall Seminar have emerged as two premier education and networking events, in part because of their unique, domicile-neutral perspective.

Being a niche player, the PIAA has been very effective in representing the concerns and interests of its members with the U.S. Administrative and Legislative branches of government. The PIAA is the most vocal healthcare and insurance industry organization in campaigning for federal healthcare liability reforms, which have passed the U.S. House of Representatives six times in the past five years. The PIAA has been in the forefront in providing lobbying expertise and data to further the tort reform efforts of the Health Care Liability Alliance, a Washington-based coalition of over 30 insurance and healthcare associations and firms. The PIAA also speaks for its members regarding tax, regulatory and privacy legislation before Congress. The PIAA also plays a major role in monitoring the operations of the National Practitioner Data Bank and has been instrumental in helping to shape Data Bank policy and procedures. The PIAA's activities are conducted through a full-time lobbying staff, augmented by our Washington lobbying counsel firm Bracewell & Patterson and supported by the guidance of the PIAA Legislative Oversight Committee.

Duane founded Prime Advisors, Inc® in 1988. He has overall responsibility for implementing investment policies for clients and supervising investment operations. Duane has been actively involved with both individual and institutional clients since 1983. Prior to founding Prime, Duane was at Seattle-Northwest Securities. He also managed the Municipal Bond Department at U.S. Bank in Portland, Oregon where he had overall responsibility for trading and underwriting. During his tenure, the bank's bond trading earnings were consistently at record levels. Along with Vince Rowland, Duane developed the theory of Dynamic Cash Flow Risk Reward AnalysisSM, and the return on surplus portfolio analysis methodology for insurance company portfolios. Duane graduated from Washington State University with a BA in Business Administration (Finance and Economics), and was both an MSRB (Municipal Securities) Registered Representative and an MSRB Principal.

duane castles: The PIAA is a national association of physician and other healthcare provider-owned and/or -operated medical liability insurance companies, which insure more than 60 percent of Americaprivate practicing physicians as well as dentists, hospitals, and other healthcare practitioners.

He was also a member of the advisory committee for the Arizona Department of Health, a member of the board of the Arizona Foundation for Medical Care, andmember of the liaison committee between the Maricopa County Bar Association and ArizonaMedical Association. Branch Captive: Is a unit of an existing offshore (alien) captive, currently licensed in Vermont to write employee benefit business for its owners and affiliates onshore. The branch is regulated as a pure captive, is taxed only on the branch writings and is required to use an onshore trust for the protection of US policyholders and ceding insurers.

Regulatory Affairs - The PIAA Regulatory Affairs Committee is charged with the responsibility of monitoring activities of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and representing the Association before that body when issues of interest arise. As the broad-based activities of the NAIC often do not consider the effects on professional liability insurers, the PIAA plays an important role in seeing that our members' interests are not overlooked in major issues affecting the property and casualty industry in general. The PIAA also works with rating agencies, such as AM Best, to represent the unique requirements of medical malpractice insurers. duane castles - Chairman: To further strengthen its efforts on behalf of federal medical liability reform, the PIAA has helped form several coalitions of like-minded organizations to coordinate and unify federal policy shaping efforts. By working with these other entities, the PIAA may more effectively promote the goals of our member companies and other insureds. For instance, the PIAA and more than 30 other organizations formed the Health Care Liability Alliance, now known as the Health Coalition on Liability and Access (HCLA) in 1993 to promote federal medical liability reform. The PIAA holds one of HCLA's officer positions, and maintains a strong voice on the organization's Board. In addition, the PIAA is very involved in the American Tort Reform Association, and as an executive committee member of the National Practitioner Data Bank.

The release of our new logo is the first of several steps to ensure that the PIAA is recognized as the preeminent source of information on medical professional liability insurance. We believe that our new logo better conveys, and strengthens, our message to our many stakeholders, including PIAA members, legislators, insurance regulators, media, and the public."

Our most recent activities have focused on active involvement with the NAIC Task Forces, which have been formed in response to the 2005 GAO Report on risk retention groups. As meets are scheduled, we send out broadcast emails to anyone that would like to receive them. Reports of activities of these meetings are also distributed to members and then stored in our online resource archives. duane castles - CICA Honors 2008: The Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA) has released the following statement in response to the November 13, 2007 ruling by Cook County, Illinois Circuit Court Judge Diane Joan Larsen in a case involving a hospital malpractice claim, Lebron v. Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, et al. The ruling struck down the 2005 Illinois medical liability law which set a cap on non-economic damages of $500,000 per physician and $1 million per hospital. The matter will now move to the Illinois Supreme Court for a final ruling on the constitutionality of the cap. For more information, please contact Eric R.
