The old town of Dubrovnik is encircled by a wall that was strengthened with bastions and forts. The residents of the medieval Dubrovnik could enter the town through two main gates: Ploce and Pile. The moat and the draw bridges provided additional protection to Dubrovnik. The main street in the old town is called Placa. This has been the main gathering place for centuries.
