A Duck for a Pet, In the House, Wears Diapers…YES!
Ranked #694 in Pets & Animals, #18,981 overall | Donates to ASPCA
Have you ever heard of a Duck For a Pet? Goes places with you? Wears Diapers?
I know that it is surprising to hear and not many people have heard of this but; yes there are ducks that live in people's homes. It is very rare but, seems to be occurring more often these days. Ducks are becoming domesticated in several areas of the country. Believe it or not, Ducks make great pets.
There is a lot involved in the care of having a Duck for a Pet. There is also a lot of learning to be done. When our family first got our duck, we had no idea what to do with her. We knew that she was now not around her mom and other ducklings that she needed to grow and survive. So, we had to start researching about Duck Care.

So, Why Do We Have a Duck for a Pet?
How did we have to Learn the Care for a Duck?
You see, we got our precious duck for an Easter gift. Our family is not one to give away precious pets after we get them and bond with them. Also, within a few days of having her, she had already "imprinted" with us. We became her pack. We quickly had to learn how to care for this precious Duck without the neglect of leaving her outside, in a pen, all day, and with no attention. She needed the love, affection, care, and attention that our other pets always have.I started with the internet. This was 3 years ago and the research was lengthy. I started looking for information on house training a duck, what to feed a duck, duck as pets, and much more. It was very hard to find information on Domestic Duck Care. Now, over the 3 years a lot has changed. Pet Duck Care and Duck Diapers are easy to find in the search engines. I guess that more people are raising Ducks for Pets. But, take my advice; there are all sorts of different opinions and advice for Domestic Duck and Goose Care. I did some studying of my own on these sites and services that are now easier to find. I will have to say that, I only trust the care and advice from the source that I first learned.
I Finally found the Duck Advice that I Needed
A very Reliable and Well Know Source Amongst Duck Lovers and Associations

After my long and lengthy research... I finally found the exact information that I was looking for. I found a wonderful lady and her husband who raise and care for Pet Ducks and Geese. They are very experienced in the matter. They have had their babies for years and they are quite the pack. I so enjoyed the website and learned so much. We called often and talked. I got great advice and support. And, believe me, in the beginning, you will definitely need support. This wonderful lady's name is Nancy. I called her Nancy Goose. What a great friend she became. Nancy taught me so much. She even has a book that she wrote on the care for Ducks and Geese as pets. I could not have provided the care of our Duck with out Nancy, her website, her book, and her hand designed duck diapers.
Our precious Nancy Goose passed away on February 26, 2009. It has been so heart breaking. But, I am here to tell you, that Her Legacy Still Lives On in Duck and Goose Care.
Her site and store is still being run and supported by her wonderful and supportive husband Alan. He too, is a great guy, who will give the same type of support. This special site is http://thegoosesmother.com. You will find the right advice and great stories.
In the beginning it was so hard to care for this Duck. You see, ducks are very clean creatures in one but, very messy in another. The messy part of a duck is the "Poop". It will be all over if you do not control it. I could not find out quick enough how to control it. So, I was thinking of a way to "litter train" our duck. Ahhhh...Aint't gonna happin! I finally found Nancy's site and got "The Miracle Duck Diapers". Thank goodness, what a life saver and difference that made. Now our baby can be in the house anytime that she has her harness and diaper on. She loves to be in the house with us we are her pack.
Our Precious Duck and Her Personality
Each Duck has their own personality, but the care will be about the same.

Our ducks name is Kuacky. She does not totally love being in the house with us. She loves to be in her bath more. Her favorite thing is bath time rather it is by sprinkler, hose, or her special bath. There was a time when she had a child's outside pool for her bath. She loved it so much and would literally swim, splash, and have a great time. But, unfortunately, Kuacky started having uncontrollable seizures. We took the big bath away in fear that she would drown if she had a seizure. At that time, the seizures were so bad and happening every ½ hour or so. They were so severe. We took her to doctors and did all that we could do. No one new what was causing the seizures. We really thought that we were going to loose our baby. But, all of a sudden they stopped. They still come occasionally and we keep a certain seizure medicine handy incase they get bad again. We really think that it has to do with her egg laying cycle. But, we are still unsure. There again, we had Nancy for support and advice. It was after we gave her "sugar water" (that Nancy suggested) that she got better.
Our precious Kuacky also loves to be out in the yard. She loves to graze the grass and eat bugs. Her favorite bugs are meal worms. We are even raising our own meal worm colony now. Hopefully she will get an abundance of meal worms soon. We are seeing results with the colony. There is another sad thing. When we can not be with her or she can not come inside, we can not leave her to roam the yard. We have to keep her in a pen. She gets so tired of her pen and we feel so bad about it. You see, for some reason she will not stay off of our concrete porch. The concrete causes her to develop foot infections on her precious feet. This infection is common with ducks. It is called "Bumble Foot". We have had to have her feet lanced, stitched, and treated several times. Once a duck gets "Bumble Foot" it is very hard to cure and it comes back very easily. We battle with that all of the time. The reason she will not stay off of the concrete is because she knows that we might be in the house. The concrete porch is where the back door to the house is. She wants to be as close to her pack as possible. Remember, we are her pack.
If you do have or get a duck, let me tell you Exactly what their most favorite thing to do is. Their most favorite thing in the entire world is To Be With You or their Family. If you raise your duck from an itzy baby, they "imprint" on you. You and the family become their "pack". If you put your "imprinted" duck with other ducks...your duck will not know what to do. Many people get and give ducks for Easter Gifts. Then they keep them until they are tired of them and then they dump them off where other ducks live. Big mistake! Those folks are setting their duck up for Death. A "Human Imprinted Duck" does not know how to survive with other ducks. Other ducks will not accept her/him either, and the "human imprinted duck" will not survive. I am going to do another lens about Ducks for Easter so, stay tuned. Getting or giving a Duck for Easter is a Big Mistake. If you get or give a Duck for Easter, then you better be Serious about having one.
We just celebrated Kuacky's 3rd Birthday. We will talk more about that in the next post too. Did you know that Ducks have a lifespan of 20 years? It is true. It is all depends on the care that they receive.
Do you think that you would ever consider getting a Duck for a Pet?
Considering what you have already learned about Ducks for Pets and the Care needed for them. Give your Opinion on having one as a Pet.
Would you ever have a Pet Duck? Yea, or Neigh...

I have had 6 for 5 years. I incubated them. They are my joy and come in my kitchenw hen hungry. I currently have a rescued 3day old wild mallard on my shoulder nuzzling. It was alone on the river for a few hours peeping for its mum and nearly sank and died, so I put it in my top and walked home. Peeping if I leave it for 5 minutes!!

I am soooooooooo getting a duck for a pet now!!!!!!!! Where and how do I get one?!?!?!
blahblah says:
stop referring to the duck as if she is a DOG. Ducks aren't dogs. They have FLOCKS. FLOCKS. Yes, they are very social, and yes, they LOVE to be around people and/or other birds, but NO, they do not have PACKS, and do not see the world as a dog would. You are NOT part of the duck's PACK, because the duck doesn't have a pack at all. You are part of her FLOCK. Flocks are different than packs. VERY DIFFERENT. Looks like you didn't do enough research.

i have 7 ducks right now 1 of which is incubating 8 eggs at the moment

I have got 11 ducks, and they all have names and little personalities. We also have chickens and turkeys (all as pets), but we love the ducks the most, especially our indian runner girls.we have got a 4-foot electric fence, and shut them into secure wooden coops every night as it gets dark. I could not bear it or be stupid enough to let foxes get to my birdies.

I would love to have a goose or a duck as a constant house companion. However, in Australia, I have no idea on where to get diapers or where to find someone to talk to with expereince. I have raised a lot of baby ducks but always as they got older they were released back to the farm. If only there was someone I could contact someone to get more information that was close to home.

my big duck is 4, is now unable to walk been 1 week since her right leg stopped working. I'm at a loss at what to do for her. big duck does live in a large covered pen in a large covered carport and is protected from weather.
I love her.

Yes, I am getting 4 Welsh Harlequins and 3 Pekins on Nov. 28. However, I doubt they'll be house ducks when they're older. Our house is just too small lol. But we're putting up a 13 ft by 7ft by 6ft covered dog run in our back yard, complete with duck house and kiddie pool. They'll also have the run of our fenced back yard when we're out with them.

I want to get a duckling so badly, and care for it as it gets older. I think that it's a very good experience. I had a duckling and it lived in the house with us (didn't know if it was such a good idea). It sadly died He sadly died in one month, and I was SO upset about it. This time, I am going to be more responsibal. The death was mostly my mothers fault.... Can ducks be kept inside of a house for as long as it lives, but also be visiting the out doors once in a while?? I've been wondering. This site helped me and made me love ducks even more!!
Denis Murrell says:
Yes, I had a drake when I was a kid. Naturally enough ,we called him Mandrake. Since he died in the 1970's at the age of 15 years, I've always wanted to have another one but I've lived in places where I couldn't even consider having a duck. Now I'm in my sixties. I live in a 25th floor apartment in Macau, China. A pet duck is still out of the question. However, my late-in-life ambition is to one day have a piece of land in Australia, my land of birth, where I can keep some ducks. Ducks make the most wonderful pets.
melodie tourville says:
:( i had a baby duckling for two days and long story short I accidently killed it :'( I feel terrible it's name was Dicky so R.I.P Dicky.
I am getting another duck though, this time i'm going to be more responsible, and mature about it.
Alice Duck says:
Reading up about the diapers, while clicking on the one that i wanted there was writing stating "not for use of ducks and geese". Did Nancy reassure you that they CAN be used for duckys thank you

Debbie Carpenter says:
Yes!! We have a pet duck named Marley. He is 6 months old. He is a house duck. We saved him from certain death at 2 days old. He loves to be with us and the dogs, we go for walks. He flies to our bed. Takes baths, has many toys and really is happy and loves his family, and life. He knows his name, come, and no. Really! We cannot imagine life without him. I also have done so much research on ducks, to give him the best life possible.
lil duck lover says:
i want a duck but im not sure i am able to take care of it im scared it will die when i get it im getting one on the 28 on monday feb. so wish me luck
Lesa says:
I have a duck. She was a school project for my oldest granddaughter last year. The teacher got the eggs and they hatched them at school. Once they were hatched the students took them home and had to take total care of them. Jessica had to take her back and forth to school and to all her classes. Mo was hatched on May 5th 2010. Jessica thought he was a boy but six days ago Mo laid her first egg. Mo has laid six eggs to date. In July Jessica's dad and Stepmother decided Jessica couldn't keep Mo. They wanted to send him up to some farm in Washington. I could see how hurt she was and I knew that it would totally kill Mo. I took Mo instead. Mo and his mommy are very happy. So to answer the question Yes I would have a duck for a pet. She is a lot of work but she is alot of joy too.
Heather says:
I have 2 sweet baby ducks, 1 is a Pekin and the other is a blue Swedish. Right now they sleep in a cage on the night stand next to my bed but when they get older they will go into a large dog kennel when we arnt home. I also have duckie diapers so they wonder around the house checkin stuff out. Sometimes I lay on the floor watching TV and they will walk all over me pulling my hair and pecking my toes:)
anonymous says:
I already do
Aundrea says:
Ive been wanting a pet duck forever!! where can i buy one!!!??
Ellen says:
I just got 4 ducklings that currently live in the house with us. I would LOVE to make one or 2 permanent house ducks but I'm not sure if that will happen just yet. We currently rent a basement apartment with my grandmother and although she doesn't mind it, her landlord might. but as of right now due to the cold weather, they are all indoor duckies until it warms up and their feathers fulling come in
COUNTRYLUTHIER says:
Probably not despite the talents displayed by the AFLAC star duckie.
Natiee says:
I just got a duckling (:

I have 5 pet ducks. they are all about 7 months old. i am thinking about making some diaper harnesses for them and would like to know where to get some diapers, any suggestions?

Alice Duck says:
I've just bought 2 ducklings, I will definitely be looking into the diapers. I would love for them to be house pets.
sandyspider says:
I think it would be interesting, but no.
Robert says:
My first ducks were a long story. We got three runners and one pekin the only hen was the pekin. They were Easter ducks in 2007 but they were also a lifetime commitment. Firstly Squirt a runner drake broke his left leg, which I splinted. Then we lost two runners Frick and Frak to foxes getting in the fences. Then our pekin Quackers Mc Goo died during the winter. Our whole family was heart broken. We had 4 ducks for over a year then lost all but Squirt. We got another runner hen chick and two mallard chicks both drakes. We adopted a pair of call ducks to save them from being strayed. But now after having ducks for three years we are fighting with the city to keep them. Hopefully we will win. Love our ducks.
Aaliya says:
I have 2 ducks. One is 3yrs old now and a new one is only 2 months old. Its just like having a dog, at least my ducks do! Only you cannot housetrain them, and I did buy those diapers but my older one would not wear it. So they watch tv on the couch sitting on a towel and I keep them in a big rabbit cage inside and let them roam the yard in the daytime (its fenced in) They are both scared to swim in our pond in our yard, so they swim every other day in the bathtub and love it!
Katelyn says:
I have 3 ducks already... but I dont know what to do with them...
If you do get a Duck for a Pet...Who do you trust for advice
I only advise one source
If you are one who does have a duck or is serious about getting one, then you are more then likely looking for the right care. My advice is to trust The "Gooses Mother and Father" site. http://thegoosesmother.com
This is the Very Helpful and Very Needed book that I finally found. What a lifesaver it has been. I still refer back to it often.

You can also take a look at the "Duck Diaper Harnesses" while you are there.

- Every year we get two ducks that come to our pool and the female duck ends up laying about 8 eggs. Last year she laid 10 and unfortunately they all died (crows) then she came back a month later and laid another 8. One had died just out of the egg and the other 7 were swimming in the pool.. I was on my way to work when I saw them in the pool and thought this time I would save at least one as every year for 8 years I watched them die.
So I took the smallest Duckling that was obviously not going to make it as he was the runt. I noticed that he kept swimming by himself and away from his pack but would go back not and then. He was very adventurous... Unfortunately the other 6 ducklings died so I am glad I kept mine.
I named him Waddle... He was only maybe 1 or 2 hours old...I kept Waddle in the shower recess inside my cat's carry container. Rushed down to the pet store and bought Chick Starter Feed... I placed a hot water bottle on top of a face washer and then put an old t shirt on top of that. The water bottle had a fur covering but I didn't want it to get poop on it... I put waddle on top of that and covered him with half the t shirt.
When I came home I was nervous as I hoped he had survived... Well he did and now he's 6 weeks old and a fully grown wild duck. His wing feathers are almost formed but still need to grow.
Waddle followed me everywhere and would snuggle next to my feet when I sat on the lounge.. I would hold him and sometimes he'd snuggle next to me when I was lying down. My cat Adonis got very jealous but has since accepted Waddle and they now play together... Waddle taught himself to duck dive, forage in the garden, eat insects, preen himself and basically survive as I was told it is very hard to rear a baby duckling on it's own. Maybe because I was always home and gave Waddle lots of attention he did.
When I had friends over he was handled and cuddled by everyone. One day I took him for his regular daily swim in the pool and there were 4 young girls. Waddle was playing with them and swimming to each one...As he got older at around 5 weeks old he started running away from me when I went near him. I was told that wild ducks have a natural instinct to do this and eventually they will fly off... I am supposed to take him to a wild life carer who has a pack of ducks she will release soon. I am sad and not sure if I really want to do this but I guess it would be best that he integrates with his own type. Not sure if he has imprinted on me and my cat but only when I take him to this carer will I know. If he frets in any way or doesn't fit in I will ask the carer to let me know and I will take him back as he has become part of my family... I can't believe how attached I am to this gorgeous black duck... I think they make wonderful pets and getting a diaper or make my own would make the poop bit so much easier to live with...

- I would like to have a duck as a companion to live indoors but unfortinately the family does not agree with me, thinking the very notion ridiculous and disgusting. Late summer our muscovy ducks' eggs were hatching, and like every hatching times there are casualties because our girls are not exactly good at caring for their young. Many die. As it were, it was agreed that we check up on the ducks regularly to make sure the ducklings have not been abandoned or left to drown. I found one duckling that I beleived was dead because he was very stiff and cold. But the most amazing thing happened! When I was digging a hole to bury him, he was in my pocket at the time and perhaps the warmth of my jumper revived him or some other miracle happened for he had uttered a faint "peeping" sound. I was shocked that he was alive, and I soon compsoed myself and took him inside to sit in front of a lamp to warm him up effectively and asap. As the day progressed I watched him slowly revive but his neck was always jutting at a strange angle. I thought there was something wrong with him but I didn't know what to do. My parents were away at the time and I was debating wether I should give him back to the girls or keep him indoors because I beleived he would have a better chance of survival. After I did my chores however and by the afternoon he was very much alive, but his neck was still held in an odd way. In his presence I mused to myself on what I should do, it was pretty warm now so the lamp was switched off and he was placed on old clothes on my bed, surrounded by old teddies because I thought he could snuggle to them. My parents returned home late and I forgot about him for a bit, I went to bed and the duckling was still snuggled in the teddies, so I didn't notice him. In the morning he was snuggled up against me - good thing I don't move much in my sleep! I beleived he became imprinted on me for he liked my company and voice. His neck had also seemed to have cured and I was thankful for that. I told my parents about the scenario and they were glad that he survived but wanted him returned to the pen. At first he kept following me out but we had to get him back in tune with his own kind and 3 days later he was imprinted back to ducks. It was a bittersweet time for me, the short bond we shared was amazing, but it was good that he learned he was a duck and grew into a healthy, large drake. Also sad, because we ate him when he reached maturity. I always wanted to experience that bond again, but I don't know if I ever will have the chance . . .
Great text and information!
