The Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) was a famous British soldier and politician.

He fought against the French in the Peninsula War in 1809-14, during which he succeeded in driving the French out of Spain and Portugal.

In 1815 Wellington (in alliance with the Prussian Marshall Blücher) defeated the French under Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.

As a politician, Wellington ruled England as a Tory Prime Ministe (1828-30). One of his achievements of his prime ministership was the passing of the Bill of Catholic Emancipation.

Wellington: The Iron Duke

Wellington: The Iron Duke

Amazon Price: $14.96 (as of 10/13/2008)

In this compelling biography, Richard Holmes charts the life of the Duke of Wellington, Britain's greatest soldier. He follows Wellington's remarkable career, from the ruins of his family seat in Ireland and the plains of India where he first gained his reputation as a brilliant commander, to the horrors of the Peninsular War and Waterloo. Holmes sees Wellington as a brilliant figure, idealistic in politics, cynical in love, a man of enormous courage and iron duty often sickened by the horrors of war.
