Hi Susan, this recipe is great. My Mother has made Dump Cakes for as long as I can remember. She found out, years ago, that she had to stop using big boxes of cake mix for enjoying this treat herself. So she went to Jiffy White Cake Mix and a large can, with a small can of Pineapples (only using the small can of juice). The prep is the same with the butter. She bakes for 45 min.

Just in case single people need a quick fix. Jiffy cake mix is hard to find though.

I liked the variety of cakes you presented. Thanks!

My mom made a cherry version of this from a recipe a co-worker shared with her. It was sooooo good! It can be really sweet with a canned pie filling. There is usually enough moisture in the mix to add additional flour. Make it according to recipe the first time. If you find that is too sweet add more flour and water or milk as needed next time.
  • Wedding_Mom Apr 10, 2012 @ 1:07 am | delete
It looks yummy. I will try your recipe. Thanks for sharing.
  • myEZrecipes Apr 8, 2012 @ 10:48 pm | delete
Hey Susan... could I use fresh fruit instead of the pie filling? Like raspberries or strawberries?
  • Susan52 Apr 9, 2012 @ 9:18 am | delete
I've never tried it with fresh fruit. As long as there's enough liquid involved, it should be fine. For instance, I've made it with frozen (thawed) blueberries in place of the cherry pie filling and that worked fine since blueberries tend to get pretty juicy as they thaw. If you try it with fresh, please let me know!

Nice lens.It looks sooo Yummy and easy to make.
Dump cakes as well as dump cobblers have been in my family for years. My grandmother(God rest her soul) taught me the tricks of stirring up a cake and cobbler in just minutes. We used fruits we canned and were made from scratch. I'm looking for a diabetic version.

  • kcbirder Feb 1, 2012 @ 6:37 pm | delete
LOVE dump cake, but I don't love the name. I use raspberry pie filling (showing up in more grocery stores recently...Wilderness/Comstock) and I call the dessert Raspberry Crisp. My recipe calls for 1/2 stick butter melted in the pan, scattered with 1/2 cup brown sugar, then the crushed pineapple, pie filling, cake mix (I use white) and 1 stick butter. Sometimes I pour the butter melted, and sometimes I cut it into the cake mix with a pastry cutter first. Yum. I think the brown sugar really adds some depth. Then, hot from the oven, with vanilla ice cream.....lovely!
  • Susan52 Feb 1, 2012 @ 6:43 pm | delete
I haven't seen raspberry pie filling, but I'll look for it. My husband would love your variation (and so would I)!

Question-I'm going to use pears for the dump cake-can I use my fresh pears or do they need to be cooked up first? Thanks!
  • Susan52 Sep 12, 2011 @ 7:59 am | delete
Hi Pam, You know, I've never baked with pears, so I'm not really sure. I'm thinking of apples, though, and thinking that baking the dump cake wouldn't cook the apples enough, so I suppose the same thing would hold true with the pears. You might have to experiment a bit to make it come out just right. What else are you going to use with the pears? It sounds delicious and I'd love to hear how it turns out for you!
  • Frankster Sep 3, 2011 @ 7:36 pm | delete

Yep. This recipe for Dump Cake is a standard in every southern kitchen. The pumpkin recipe is called "Pumpkin Crisp" in my home. Thanks for sharing these traditional recipes you did an outstanding job. Blessed.

Oh carp! Another easy-to-make goodie to swell my waistline. You know I'll make it tonight. And I just had to order a couple of the gift cards to send the recipe to friends who are unlikely ever to look at Squidoo lenses. You're good, my dear, very good.

I hope this finds you and your family well with chins and shoulders high as you navigate these terrible days. May you have all the help you need and more serendipitous blessings than you can imagine.
  • Helenee Aug 1, 2011 @ 5:49 am | delete
Well, I never use pre-made fillings or any kind of canned stuff -- but I could prepare a quick filling and use it for the cake. Or I can try the Pumpkin Crunh.

  • Jan Jul 22, 2011 @ 6:01 am | delete
I used a slow cooker on this recipe as that is what it called for and doen it exactly like the recipe said and said to put on low in the slow cooker -I Did- waited 3 hrs as told and still not done - Middle looked like it was getting done, but outside all around was still just mushy. Finally ended up putting foil on handles of slow cooker and put in the over at 350 deg and baked for 35 minutes. Took it out and the bottom was all burnt and couldn't even get it out of the slow cooker pan. I felt so bad because I had wasted all of the ingredients that cost me a lot. The dump cake looks good, but would just like to know what I did wrong as I thought it was going to be so good. Please advise me!!!
  • Susan52 Jul 22, 2011 @ 7:15 am | delete
Jan, perhaps someone else's version uses a slow cooker, but my dump cake recipe definitely recommends the oven. Sorry you had a mess with yours!
  • scarlettohairy Jul 5, 2011 @ 6:24 pm | delete
I think the cherry cobbler version without the pineapple sounds very good. Yum. May have to try this out one of these days!
  • paysattention Jul 4, 2011 @ 5:23 pm | delete
    Hi Susan52,
I've heard about dump cake for years but I've never tried it yet, however I'm going to try the Black Forest version very soon. In your red-box comment about reducing the recipe size for a 9X9 size pan, you didn't say how much butter to use, or how long to bake it. Can you please enlighten me so I don't make a mess of things?
I'm really looking forward to these combinations of flavors, cherry and chocolate. But I also want to try the peach version. Sounds so yummy! Thanks.
  • Susan52 Jul 4, 2011 @ 5:50 pm | delete
Hi paysattention - Good question! For a 9 x 9 pan, use about one stick of butter. The recipe is pretty forgiving, so if you use a whole stick and then, after baking, feel that it's too much, you can reduce it a bit the next time. Baking time will be close to the same; I'd start checking at 40 minutes. Hope that helps, and hope you'll let me know how you like the cherry-chocolate combination. That's one I haven't tried yet.

I make two different kinds. The first is a Peach and Cherry. My mother made it all throughout my childhood. It is still my favorite. Now I am trying a new Dump Cake with Apple Pie Filling. So far so good. I made one last night for a friend and I am taking it to him today. If he likes it then i know its a winner. lol He is a picky eater.

So that's why it's called dump cake. I thought it's one of those messy sheet cakes. It sounds like an easy enough recipe. I will definitely be trying it one of these days. Can't decide which variation to try first though. Cherry and pineapple sounds good! :-)
  • Susan52 Jun 14, 2010 @ 9:45 am | delete
Cherry and pineapple is our classic favorite, Martin, but yesterday I substituted 3 cups of frozen blueberries (partly thawed) for the cherry pie filling and the result was outstanding! I may have a new favorite.

Your Dump (as a verb - loved that line) cakes are delicious looking and a perfect compliment to a holiday meal for the dinner guests who are not crazy about pumpkin pie. I've featured this lens on my Thanksgiving Themes lens.

Mmm. Sounds good! It's certainly coming up on pumpkin season, isn't it? I need to make a pumpkin version soon, too! Glad my lens could help!

Hi Susan, I have one of these in the oven right now for tonights Bible Study. I love your page and use it as a referrence as I don't have the time and temp memorized yet. Coming here today reminded me of the pumpkin recipe I wanted to try. Hopefully I'll remember next time it's my turn for snack. We have lots of pumpkin lovers in our group.
  • puzzlemaker Jun 20, 2009 @ 5:09 pm | delete
This is my all time favorite dessert. Still warm with ice cream. We use 4 cups fresh blueberries instead of the cherry pie filling. I've heard this recipe can heal the sick...and more!

Dump cakes were very popular in the 70's and 80's, but I haven't thought about them in years. I need to make one again.
    Thanks for sharing

Oh wow! This look great and I really plan on trying this one out. I shared it on my Facebook Profile so all my friends could try too. Great lens! I think my (__[__) got bigger just reading it.

I love this cake and I'm not a fan of cherry pie filling. I can't wait to try some of the variations, as I love blueberries. I'm also a fan of pumpkin so I guess I'll have to favorite this page and try these recipes.

Dump cakes rock! They are absolutely perfect for last minute baking and "pot luck" meals with friends and family (I'm definitely going to have to try the pumpkin one :o) 5* for a great lens.

Fantastic lens! As a dessert lover, I was drawn to the funny title. The cake looks great and I'm all about easy. The cake doctor cookbook is a staple in my home (she dresses up cake mixes too). Not a huge fan of cherry, but the subbing of the peach or blueberry is a great idea so I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks!

Mmmm, I absolutely love dump cake served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I would make some right now if it didn't require trip to the grocery store. (Not that I won't think about what I'm missing all night.) I love your recipe combinations and the pumpkin crunch sounds delicious too. Thanks for reminding me about an old favorite!
  • Susan52 Jan 20, 2009 @ 6:35 pm | delete

Ah, me dear! We come from the same Cook-a-doodle-doo Cookin' School as I make this dump cake too and whatz not to luv about it. Amazingly tastes so good. Say, have you seen KimG's litter cake? Rather in the same chapter if ya know what I mean. You've got my Cook-a-doodle-doo stamp of approval today! ;)
