The Dumpling Bag by SheKnits - Cute Knitted & Felted Bag from Fall 08 Interweave Knits

Introducing the Addictively Cute Dumpling Bag

The pattern for the knit and felted Dumpling Bag is now available to purchase online from Internweave Knits.  It's $5.50.

This is a really easy small felted purse and so cute!  You can embroider a design on it when you are done and its so easy to customize this and really make it your own.  The felting process hides all your mistakes so it's great for beginners.

The Dumpling Bag by SheKnits was published in the Fall 08 issue of Interweave Knits magazine and has already spurred over 1011 projects on Ravelry and is one of the most popular patterns on Ravelry. (Ravelry is a fantastic knitting social community/website - check it out if you haven't joined yet!)

I have fallen in love with this cute little round felted bag and wanted to make a page where I could put together information on how to gather the materials and instructions to make it.

Dumpling Tips and Tricks

I-Cord Cheat: I used a Clover Wonder Knitter

spool knitter to make my i-cord instead of double pointed needles.  Yeah - I am a cheater.

For a "jog-less" joining in the round
on circular needles try this trick: After casting on you swap the first stitch and the last stitch to the opposite needles and then start knitting.

Ring Placement Tutorial  (if you are confused by how the rings work these pictures will help make it simple)

Some tips from Taffyyarn
on Ravelry  group "IK Dumpling KAL"

Do not be timid about the embroidery

Keep an open mind about the final outcome of the dumpling

Think outside the dumpling with color i.e. pipp

Really, it turns out darling no matter what!

Other tips I have learned from the Ravelry group:

Use a balloon to help the dumpling keep its shape when drying after felting.

If your circular needles are longer than 16 inches gather part of them up in a loop and pull through the work to keep it from being stretched out when you are working your decreases. (Magic Loop Trick)

If you don't have rings, improvise.  We have seen people use no rings, napkin rings, make rings from Sculpey, etc.

Make an "Apple Dumpling" in red yarn with a green leaf on top!  Super cute work done in all kinds of original dumplings - check them out in Flickr and Ravelry.

How about a pumpkin dumpling bag for Halloween?

Double Dumpling

Need a bigger bag?

Double Dumpling:
3 skeins of Lambs Pride Bulky and size 15 needles

From LlamaLady on Ravelry:

For a Double Dumpling  (larger version of the Dumpling bag) use two strands of BULKY weight yarn (remember the pattern in the magazine
calls for holding two strands of WORSTED weight yarn) and the
modifications are that you knit the body to 8" (which is longer then
what the pattern calls for) and the strap to 40"

You can use a size 15 needle with the double bulky yarn.

Info on Yardage for Double Dumpling from Sharon:

250 yds (2 skeins of lambs pride bulky for example)  PLUS you will need an
additional 1/2 skein of bulky (still of course used doubled) if you want
to have about a 40 inch (before felting) strap = 310 yards.

If you used a super bulky yarn, like Lambs Pride Burly Spun then you would only need 185 yds. regular bulky you need 310 yds.

Bulky Feltable 100% Wool on Ebay (Non Superwash)

When you buy wool for the dumpling you can use 2 strands of worsted weight wool or 1 strand of bulky. You want to yse 100% wool and make sure it will felt - NOT superwash. You want it to be hand washable only so that it will felt properly.
