The Dungeon Amsterdam was an unexpected and unplanned side trip of our cruise in Europe. Our final two days on the continent were spent in the city of Amsterdam and we packed more than we could have possibly imagined into those two days. Toward the end of the final day, we passed The Dungeon and three of us decided to venture into this deep and dark attraction. My husband opted to chicken out and managed to get a couple of hours of shopping in while we were inside, being tortured...

The Dungeon in Amsterdam is part museum, part theatre and part amusement park!

What Awaits Those Who Dare Enter The Dungeons In Amsterdam?

Those who dare to enter will encounter torture, disease and even death. A series of actors does a wonderful job of guiding you through your visit to The Dungeons. If you go, be prepared for the following (and more) horrible experiences:
  • Reaper

    Meet your first guide, a robed figure in the torture chamber. Sit down beside your fellow victims and hope that YOU are not the one he singles out.
  • Labyrinth of the Lost

    Find your way through the most amazing labyrinth of mirrors that I have ever encountered. Just when you think you see a path straight forward (and maybe even out of this torturous place) you walk into a mirror. See your travelling companion over there? Be careful because that may not be him at all but rather his reflection ten times over.
  • Council of Blood

    Visit the Council of Blood and see Holland and law enforcement as it existed in the 16th century in Holland. Do not enter this courtroom if you have been up to no good.
  • Rembrandt's Secret

    Rembrandt did have a secret...enter the madhouse and discover what it was all about.
  • Soul Merchants De VOC

    Ah, yes, you signed innocently and gave your life away to the soul merchant of the 17th and 18th centuries. Now you will be forced to travel across the seas under horrible conditions.

The Dungeons are recommended for children aged 10 and up. I'm not sure if my second son would have enjoyed this at the age of 10.

Tours cost 21 euros but keep your eyes open for discount coupons worth 5 to 7.5 euros off the cost of admission. Check your hotel!

Expect to spend about one and a half hours in The Dungeons. (Plus a bit more time if you have to que for photos at the end and if you want to shop in the store.)

Are you scared to visit The Dungeons?

Ordinarily, we skip this kind of gimmicky attraction. However, at the end of our final day in Europe, we felt like doing something a bit different. We'd seen many museums including Van Gogh's and Rembrandt's in Amsterdam and many historic sites and we were definitely ready for a change.

I am so glad that we did choose to go in as this was a lot of fun. I am sorry only that my husband did not go in with us. If you have boys, no doubt they will know about this destination before you do and, if you decide to go, they are likely to find the whole thing quite brilliant.

Would we go again? In a heartbeat.

    Yes, I'm scared! But I have two sons, too, so if we were in Amsterdam I suspect this would be a choice stop! Great job on the lens. (How did you do that with your head chopped off??)
