The Dungeons Edinburgh Review ~ A Horrible History Lesson

Ranked #9,955 in Travel & Places, #254,105 overall

For Halloween This Year, I'd Love To Go Back To The Dungeons in Edinburgh

There is NOWHERE more appropriate to lose your head than in The Dungeons in Edinburgh, Scotland. I lost my head there this summer (2010) and it was, believe it or not, quite an enjoyable experience. For those not in the know, you should be aware that this was not the first time I've ever lost my head. Last summer I had the privilege of losing it in The Dungeons in Amsterdam.

Yes, I enjoyed myself that time and yes, I would love to do it again!

Enter At Your Own Peril!

What Awaits Those Who Dare Enter The Dungeons In Edinburgh?

Those who dare to enter The Dungeons in Edinburgh will experience torture, disease and even death as a group of actors guide you through a series of rooms. If you go, be prepared for the following (and more) horrible experiences:
  • JUDGEMENT OF SINNERS: Be tried for your crimes
  • TORTURE: Learn about torture methods in the torture chamber.
  • THE CAVE OF SAWNEY BEAN: Learn about the cannibalistic Bean family and ride through his lair.
  • BURKE AND HARE: Learn about the business of murder through the enterprise of Burke and Hare.
  • MARY KING'S GHOST: Face Mary King's Ghost.
  • WILLIAM WALLACE: Learn about the fate of Scotland's brave William Wallace.
  • EXTREMIS: Scream as you ride the long drop to doom.
  • LABYRINTH OF LOST SOULS: Lose your way in the labyrinth of mirrors.

The Dungeons are recommended for children aged 10 and up although The Dungeons does not set a minimum age. I'm not sure if my second son would have enjoyed this at the age of 10.

In Edinburgh's Dungeons, You'll Learn About Burke and Hare

Who supplied fresh bodies for the 1820s medical profession...

At The Dungeons in Edinburgh, you will learn about the profitable business of two of Edinburgh's killers as they found new means to supply the medical profession with fresh corpses in 1820s.

The Flesh and the Fiends, is a 1960s Peter Cushing horror movie about the duo of Burke and Hare. In this fictionalized account of the story, they rob graves and, when a visitor in Burke's rooming house dies, they discover a unique opportunity.

Considered one of the best horror movies of the 1950s and 1960s, J. Tompkins says that it boasts a " very spooky atmosphere, a superb cast and is a fact-based film." The perfect precursor to your visit to haunted Scotland and The Edinburgh Dungeon.

Are you scared to visit The Dungeons?

A few years ago, we would have skipped this kind of gimmicky tourist attraction. However, we chanced to visit The Dungeons in Amsterdam when we were tired of touring and just looking for some light entertainment and we loved it. That means that if ever pass by any of the other four dungeon locations, we will definitely be visiting which is, of course, exactly what happened this summer when we were in Scotland and The Dungeons in Edinburgh did not let us down. This attraction was equally fun and naturally a perfect choice for anyone travelling with teenagers!

In my page about The Dungeons in Amsterdam, I asked, "Would we go again?" and replied, "In a heartbeat" and we did, albeit this time to The Dungeons in Edinburgh, Scotland.

How about you? Would you dare to visit the Dungeons? Or maybe you have already been?
