What Makes a DunkChamp?
Natural Ability vs. Hard Work
Ok, so we look at all the Gatorade/Sprite NBA dunkchamps and it's just kind of
in-your-face obvious that these guys were born to dunk. But what about local
legends? Community dunk contest champs? The occasional "dorky dunker"?
Where did most of these guys get their hops? Well, I can only speak for myself
(and a few others here that I ball with) and I can tell you:
The absolute best way to get better at dunking is to dunk more.
What? Yep. That's right. Think about it. Dunking really is a bit of an art form.
I mean, the best artisits in the world don't do their best work right after they either
realize that they can draw well or after they've just graduated art school or
something.
Usually it's the culmination of a bunch of different events and experiences, or,
has we put it: practice. Well, that's great but what good does that do you if you
can't dunk? Heh, do what a lot of kids have been doing for years and get an
adjustable hoop and lower the rim to a level that you can "practice" your dunks on.
Hire a personal plyo trainer.

Workout on a rebounder/mini trampoline.

this next one's the top dog. A lot of the times programs

The price is usually around $99--sometimes less, so keep your eye open.
Obviously, it's nice to be able to already have the genetic fast-twitch fibers in
place to be able to jump out the gym in 6th grade, but most of us have had
to work on our vert. This is the program that has had the most success at
teaching people how to dunk.
Tis The Season
This time of year is when most players start doing other things.Priorities start resembling:
1) Girls
2) Video Games
3) Eat
4) Sleep
5) Occasionally Ball
That's right, the perfect time to ramp up your drills, cardio, and jump-oriented workouts.
Obviously, I'm not saying to completely eliminate some of the above "necessities", but just reprioritize.
The offseason is seed-planting, brick-laying, foundation building season. And it's the best time to polish up your shine.
