The Coffee Maker Dunkin' Donuts Uses:

They use these commercial coffee makers more often than not...

Some franchises use BUNN coffee makers. These coffee makers are awesome, and can really heat up a pot of coffee to near boiling in a short period of time. The burners give an even heat on the plate, and the baskets are ideal for holding grinds without overflow.

Five Things Dunkin' Donuts Does to Make Great Coffee

(That you probably don't do at home!)

Dunkin' Donuts logo - America Runs on DunkinIt takes the right equipment and the right beans to make a great tasting cup of coffee. Freshness is key, and all of the bags of beans from Dunkin' Donuts are sealed up and used in a very short period of time. They're brewed and served fast, and that's why it tastes so fresh, especially in the morning.

Want your cup of morning coffee to taste more like Dunkin' Donuts, and less like an ash tray? Here are five things that the local donut shop is doing that might make your coffee taste better.:

  1. Always grind it fresh. Not grinding it up every time you brew? Start buying whole beans, and grinding it every time you brew your coffee. This makes for a much fresher taste and fuller aroma.
  2. Make sure the coffee maker gets very hot. Even if you don't like your coffee the temperature of the surface of the sun, it's important for the taste of the coffee. A temperature between 196-200 degrees F will ensure the grinds are getting cooked enough during the coffee making process. Bunn coffee makers are a great choice for this.
  3. Use the coffee quickly. Once you open the bag, it starts to deteriorate in taste quickly. Use the bag of coffee within a week for best results, or sooner. Technically, it will last longer, but it won't be at optimal taste unless you use the coffee immediately after purchasing.
  4. Don't let the coffee sit on the burner more than 18 minutes. DD has the "18 minute rule" for pots on the burner. After that point, they dump the coffee. Turn the burner off, or make iced coffee with the rest.
  5. Measure the coffee correctly. The coffee grinders at Dunkin' Donuts are calibrated to have the same amount in the grind basket every single time. Follow the directions on the bag using a coffee scoop, or experiment to find the perfect amount to match the in-store taste.

You'll also want to make sure you are keeping the beans or grinds in an airtight container, that the coffee maker is properly washed, and that the coffee is being stored in a cool, dark place.

Five Things You Didn't Know About Ordering at Dunkin' Donuts

Secret menu items and ordering tips

At Dunks (as New Englanders call it), you can order some things that aren't necessarily on the menu.
  • 1Combination coolattas: combine any flavors like caramel mocha, coconut vanilla mocha, or strawberry orange. It's as simple as them pouring different mixes together, and they should do it by request.
  • 2Get any flavor in decaf just by asking. The flavored coffees are injected with a flavor shot, so decaf is no problem.
  • 3You can get whole bean coffee ground in different coarseness for electric perc, etc. Hand them a whole bean bag of DD coffee and ask them.
  • 4Melting the sugar in iced coffee can result in an entirely different flavor, and no gross sugar clumps at the bottom. Ask when ordering to "melt the sugar."
  • 5Senior discounts are available to anyone over 62, so just ask.

Coffee Coolattas Were Introduced

in 1997, with fruit coolattas following thereafter. Coffee flavors available are hazelnut, caramel, mocha, french vanilla, and others.
