How to Make a Perfect Cup of Dunkin' Donuts Coffee
Everything you'll need to brew the perfect coffee at home
When you're trying to replicate a Dunkin' Donuts coffee, there are a few key things to keep in mind.
- The freshness of the beans, and the freshness of the grinds. Grind it fresh for the best taste, and make sure to grind it to the correct size.
- The temperature of the coffee. Dunkin' Donuts coffee is brewed to about 196 F, so that's pretty hot. Even if you don't like your coffee this hot, this will change the taste of the coffee when it's cool.
- The amount of grinds you use. Correctly measure the amounts to ensure it tastes just like the real deal!
- The water. Use good, purified water (not necessarily bottled water, but filtered water) for the best taste. Icky tasting water = gross toasting coffee.
It's also important to note that you should wait for the coffee to be entirely done brewing before you drink it. Placing a cup underneath the final drops will affect the taste! The last bits of coffee that brew are weaker, while the beginning is stronger. Taking that early coffee will mean weaker coffee on cup 2.

How to Make a Dunkin' Donuts Iced Coffee
Brew fresh iced coffee just like the stores
It sounds so simple, doesn't it? Just buy the beans from Dunkin' Donuts, grind them up, brew some coffee, and throw it on ice. Yet, when you try it... something is missing. What is it? What's lacking from your iced coffee are a few different things. First, Dunkin' Donuts double brews iced coffee. That doesn't mean they reuse the grinds, it means they use double the amount of grinds to make iced coffee. You'll also need purified water to make sure the coffee doesn't come out tasting like tap water. The cleaner the water, the better your drink will taste. You can simply filter your tap water with BRITA filters or PUR filters (I recommend PUR because they work well for me).
- Grind your coffee fresh. The fresher the grinds and the coffee, the richer the taste. For what you normally use on your coffee, double that amount. You may have to brew two batches so you don't overflow the grind chamber (this is a good idea, since coffee isn't cheap to replace!).
- Have plenty of ice on hand. Smaller ice cubes will make the drink taste colder, but don't go too small or you'll have an instantly watered down coffee. Use a glass container, if you have one, to contain your coffee. Plastic containers tend to leach taste and chemicals back and forth. Plastic is permeable, meaning it absorbs food and gives off chemicals. Use a newer plastic container that hasn't been exposed to high heat (and has been thoroughly washed), or use a glass pitcher instead.
- After the coffee has brewed, pour the hot coffee into a container filled 1/3 with ice. Stir the mixture thoroughly with a large spoon. This should cool the iced coffee to room temperature.
- Prepare your Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee the way you like it! Add the sugar or sugar substitute first, then the dairy, then the coffee, then the ice. Sometimes, Dunkin' Donuts will melt the sugar before making your drink. If you'd like, reserve some of your hot coffee aside to melt the sugar. Stir it very well with a spoon to completely melt the sugar, then continue making the drink.
To make the drink a Turbo Iced Coffee:
- Simply add a shot of fresh brewed espresso to the top of the iced coffee, and mix.

Is your machine not making good coffee?
The right coffee maker should get the coffee piping hot, between 196-200 degrees F like the Bunn below.
What About the Coffee Machine?
The coffee maker of choice when brewing up Dunkin' Donuts coffee
With this machine, as with any, give all of the inside parts a good cleaning before use. Run water through the machine once in a while to give the pipes a good cleaning, and make sure the coffee carafe itself is clean. Using baking soda and vinegar can remove much of that burnt on coffee taste and residue. The same can be done with the filter basket.
As for Dunkin' Donuts, the machines they use are BUNN coffee makers, like the one seen below. This particular coffee maker has 340 reviews and 4.5 stars, so it's a solid coffee making machine that will work well for years and years. These heat very well, and allow for a great single pot of coffee. They also have large coffee makers, or coffee urns, that taste nowhere near as good as the single pots. As a rule of thumb, smaller usually tastes better.

To brew their coffee, Dunkin' Donuts uses BUNN. Compared to just about every other coffee maker out there, BUNN serves there's up the hottest, percolates the coffee evenly across the grinds, and eliminates grinds from entering the carafe/decanter. The decanter itself is also high quality. According to Dunkin' Donuts, you should only have your coffee on the burner for 18 minutes! After that, the taste will start to deteriorate. So, after 18 min, turn off the burner and make iced coffee out of any leftovers.
What's a "Regular" Coffee at Dunkin' Donuts?
Anatomy of a coffee (it's a secret, don't tell!)

Since moving to pre-measured machinery, Dunkin' Donuts has pretty much done away with the teaspoon. Instead, they rely on "Sure Shot" pump machines that automatically dispense dairy. Since most of us can't afford this giant luxury, nor want the giant monstrosity in our home, here's an easy breakdown of Dunkin' Donuts dairy and sugar lingo:
It's pretty simple.
A regular coffee is three sugars, and three creams. The unit of measure is teaspoons. If you get "extra sugar," most of the time, this is understood to mean double sugar. "Extra cream" is also double. Light? That means about one extra teaspoon of cream. Extra light is about five creams.Light with skim milk - this requires a little bit more milk. To make a coffee light, you may have to use an extra teaspoon or so. Even so, it won't be a light color, since skim milk is thin and watery in comparison to light cream or even whole milk.

Dunkin' Donuts Iced Lattes
The secret to a delicious mocha, caramel, or other iced latte just like DD

The lattes at Dunkin' Donuts are made with espresso and milk. These can be replicated easily at home with any espresso machine that has a steamer. You'll need milk, then espresso beans, along with some flavored syrups. Mocha and caramel are the two standard syrups that Dunkin' Donuts uses, though they also have "flavor shots" you can add which include blueberry, french vanilla, hazelnut, and coconut.
To make your iced latte a caramel or mocha, you'll add the syrup. Unfortunately, Dunkin' Donuts doesn't sell the mocha or caramel to the public. What you can try to do instead is replicate the syrup. The caramel is very similar to most store bought caramel sundae syrup like Hershey's. The mocha syrup is richer than Hershey's, and more comparable to Ghirardelli chocolate syrup. You can also order mocha syrup online from many vendors, including Amazon.
Iced lattes are simple to make. Add the syrup to the cup first, then the ice, then the milk. Lastly, add the espresso. Dunkin' Donuts doesn't stir the iced latte, but you can. It tastes better that way. Who wants to sip up big syrup chunks? You'll also need a straw, since sipping an iced latte without one just doesn't taste the same for some reason. Lastly, if you'd like whipped cream, that would be difficult at home. However, Dunkin' Donuts doesn't use anything particularly fancy for whipped cream, just plain old Reddi Whip.

Dunkin' Donuts Hot Lattes
How to steam and perfect the hot lattte
To make a hot latte, you'll need an espresso machine with a working steamer. To steam the milk properly, use whole milk for best results, or a higher fat content milk. Skim milk does steam, but the foam tends to disappear quickly. Use very cold milk for best steaming results. First, don't overfill the cup you are steaming the milk in. Leave plenty of room for the milk to froth up and bubble. Stainless steel cups work best for this. Next, you'll steam the milk. Place the steam wand in the milk until the milk starts to bubble. At this point, you'll want to keep the end of the steam wand just below the surface. Fully submerging the steam wand on smaller machines can cause big messes and burnt milk. As the milk froths up, keep the wand just below the liquid line, not the froth line. This will ensure froth continues to be made from the milk. Pour the milk onto the espresso using a spoon to hold back the froth. Spoon the froth over the drink last. If you're having sugar or syrup, add that to the drink first.
