Most times on the markets you will see battery chargers built for a special brand. Did you know that there are other companies who have researched for years and developed products that are quite as effective or even better. They produce products and service that are compatible with both their products and the products of other companies.

Batteries are a great source of energy they help to keep our appliances and gadgets running. Chargers are their feeders, chargers allow batteries to replenish their energy when they are worn.

Universal chargers allow you to charge all your batteries of different brands. This is a good saving method as it prevents you from having to buy a charger for all the batteries you want to charge.

What is a Battery Charger 

A battery charger is a device that makes life easier. Imagine if every time your batteries ran down you had to go to a mall or shop to pick up a new pack. Imagine if after talking on your cell phone for two hours you had to go and buy another battery. I don't know about you but that would really drive me crazy.

A battery charger is a life saver. It allows you to put back energy into your batteries by forcing an electric current through it. The electric current can be generated by so many sources these days. Simply put it could come from either a wall outlet a car battery(car charger) or solar power.

-Try to ensure that your batteries are fully discharged or very close to being fully discharge (5%).
-Try to disconnect batteries as soon as they are fully charged.

Battery chargers Terms and Definitions 

NiMH
Means that the chemical composition of a battery is made up of nickel and a metal hydride. So it stands for Nickel Metal Hydride.

Li-ion
Means lithium ion. The cell normally contains a variation of lithium salts where the ions can be generated.

Simple
A simple charger is the basically works by putting a constant charge directly into the battery. It does not alter the amount of charge in anyway to for example reduce the amount of charge as the battery capacity is reached. What you realize with a simple charger is though it is inexpensive. You run the risk of weakening or totally destroying your battery if it is left plugged in to long.

Trickle
A trickle is a slow charger that slowly put back charge into a battery. Because of the slow nature and the small current it transfers at a time. It can be left plugged in for an indefinite period of time with out causing your batteries to overcharge.

Timer-based
Timer based chargers operate under the basis that they only run for a set time. They are most times buikt for specific batteries. So a bigger or smaller capacity battery could not work with them. A disadvantage is that if the battery was not fully discharged it would be overcharged since the timer is fixed.

Fast
Fast chargers are a little different from the chargers discussed so far. They make use of a special control system that is made into the battery. This system prevents the battery from being damaged when it is recharged by a fast charger. Fast chargers most times have a cooling fan to regulate the battery temperature during charging. They are also very effective with NiMH batteries that do not contain the control device.

Intelligent
An intelligent charger operates by charging the battery up to about 85% before switchin over to trickle charging. They may monitor the battery's voltage, temperature and/or time under charge to determine the optimum charge current at that instant. Charging is terminated when a combination of the voltage, temperature and/or time indicates that the battery is fully charged.

Pulse
Pulse chargers work by sending strictly controlled pulses into a battery. Some chargers use pulses to check the current battery state when the charger is first connected, then use constant current charging during fast charging, then use pulse charging as a kind of trickle charging to maintain the charge.

Inductive
This type of charger is used in electrical devices that causes you to be in contact with water such as toothbrushes and other bathroom equipment. It does not require electrical contacts. It charges batteries when a current flowing through the charger induces a current to flow through a device which stores energy in the batteries.

This operates under the principles of magnetic induction. The principle demonstrates that their is a magnetic field around all current carrying wires.

USB (Universal Serial Bus)
USB cables normally has up to about a 5volt power supply this enables the use of a USB cable as a source of power for charging batteries. This is commonly used in charging iPod batteries.
