5. Duran Duran: Girl Band, Boy Band, or...?

Much was made early on about Duran Duran mania being similar to Beatlemania - that is, with their fanbase mainly consisting of screaming teenage girls. But does the band have male fans as well? I'm curious as to the gender breakdown of Duran Duran fans answering this survey.

The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1981 and was a big success in the United Kingdom at the time, remaining in the Top 100 for 117 weeks! It contained several big hits the band still plays in concert today. Which is your favorite track?

Duran Duran's second album would launch them into super-stardom outside of the United Kingdom, especially in the States where their videos would become highlights of MTV airplay. Its strong reception has placed it on numerous Top 100 lists, including Q magazine's list of "100 Greatest British Albums".

10. Favorite Song from "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" (1983)

Duran Duran's third album would be the last to feature the original 5-member line up of the band until 2004's Astronaut. It also perhaps revealed the growing pressure upon the band to measure up to the promise of their first two albums, and did not receive as strong of a reception despite hit songs like "The Reflex".

11. Favorite Song on "Notorious" (1986)

"Notorious" marked a major change in Duran Duran's sound - and personnel - with the departure of Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor. While some fans embraced the changes, others were put off by the albums more funk, bass-heavy sound.

12. Favorite Song on "Big Thing" (1988)

Duran Duran in concert, October 2011. Photograph taken by the author, sockii

With 1988's "Big Thing", Duran Duran continued developing more of a dance/funk sound, in order to try to stay relevant to the changing musical times of the 1980s. Singles released from the album included "All She Wants Is" and "I Don't Want Your Love".

13. Favorite Song on "Liberty" (1990)

1990's "Liberty" was the first Duran Duran studio album to feature guitarist Warren Cuccurullo and drummer Sterling Campbell as full members of the group, contributing not just to the music but songwriting as well. It was not, however, particularly well received by fans and the sound was described by some as bland and over-produced. Do you agree?

15. Favorite Song from "Thank You" (1995)

Duran Duran in concert, October 2011. Photograph taken by the author, sockii

Nearly every long-lasting band today seems to find it necessary to release an all-covers album - and this was Duran Duran's. While it performed modestly well on the charts, it was almost universally panned by critics, even being named "the worst album ever" in 2006 by Q magazine.

16. What's Your Favorite Song from "Medazzaland" (1997)?

Bassist John Taylor departed the band during the recording of this album, which performed so poorly on the charts that it was never officially released in the UK. Even so, it features several notable and interesting tracks and a variety of musical styles.

17. What's Your Favorite Song on "Pop Trash" (2000)?

Duran Duran in concert, October 2011. Photograph taken by the author, sockii

With "Pop Trash", the band continued with Simon, Nick and Warren, but it would prove to be difficult going. The bulk of the songwriting fell on Nick and Warren while Simon was dealing with lengthy writers block and still upset at John Taylor's departure. The album would perform dismally on the charts, despite a successful concert tour in support of it.

Most long-time fans of Duran Duran were thrilled when it was announced that Roger and Andy Taylor would be returning for the 2004 release of "Astronaut", and its supporting tour. Despite a long and uneasy recording period, it was generally well received by fans who enjoyed the return to an earlier sound while still far from a simple nostalgia recording.

19. Favorite Song from "Red Carpet Massacre" (2007)?

Guitarist Andy Taylor once again left the group after "Astronaut" and an initial attempt to record a follow-up album faltered. The album received mixed reviews from the press and fans alike.

20. Favorite Song from "All You Need is Now" (2010)

Duran Duran's latest release was 2010's "All You Need Is Now", produced by the Grammy Award winning Mark Ronson. The album was hailed by some as the band's best release since - and somewhat of a sequel to - their most beloved album of the past, "Rio." While there is certainly a retro feeling to some of the tracks, others are as modern and current-sounding as anything the band has released to date.

It was Duran Duran's eye-catching music videos which made them an MTV sensation in the early 1908s - and hugely launched their success, especially in America. If not for those videos, would you still be as much of a fan? Was it the music that hooked you first, or the band's visuals?

28. Arcadia vs. Power Station

Comparing the band's two 80s side projects

After "Seven and the Ragged Tiger", members of Duran Duran separately took part in two side projects with very different sounds and personalities. Power Station consisted of John Taylor, Andy Taylor, Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson, and their sound was heavy funk and rock. Arcadia had a much more "artsy"/synth-heavy sound, more similar to that of previous Duran Duran recordings, and consisted of Simon, Nick and Roger.

Which side project band do you think was better?

Arcadia

StacyBirch says:

????

Talking4Free says:

Gosh, I am really split because I haven't listened to complete albums of both side projects as of yet. I would likely say Arcadia because of Si's voice.

Heloisa says:

Arcadia. Their album So Red The Rose is the most perfect album ever made!

madoc says:

I'm an Arcadia guy, I think that was a better direction the whole band could have profitably followed

Eli S says:

Aracadia was experimental and more in line with the musical art form of DD.

Lenny says:

Arcadia. Great music and Simon's best vocals throughout

Vix says:

Arcadia made beautiful music!!

Chris says:

Arcadia made better music and Vids.

susie. says:

Power station were more rockier, i prefered Arcadias sound more.

Cindi moulton says:

I like the gothic sound

Elsie says:

Graça Pereira says:

Both!!!

Mel says:

Arcadia

Michelle says:

The Arcadia album has stood the test of time for me whilst I only like a couple of the Power Station songs

Amanda says:

Power Station.

Annemarie says:

Arcadia is much more my style but I do like Power Station as well

Kendra says:

I couldn't get into PS. I tried....John was in it after all, but I just didn't get it. Arcadia drew me in and I was hooked. I still feel that way.

Jenny B says:

still love Arcadia. Power Station was heavy, beat driven, funk rock'n'roll and very good...but the moody, atmospheric, ethereal beauty of Arcadia tips the scales for me.

andrea says:

I would have both if i didn't have to choose

Tyler says:

I like both PS and Arcadia but I find myself listening to Arcadia still to this day.

Power Station

suzannej3 says:

Powerstation. It had the rock edge that lives inside DD but rarely emerges.

Moira says:

Power Station

marcia lemes says:

because JT, I like Power Station

Dkprincess6 says:

I have to go with Power Station. Only because of the inclusion of Robert Palmer. I always thought he was talented as well.

April says:

Power Station! It just totally rocked. Arcadia was nothing to sneeze at, as it was super as well. Just liked Power Station as it seems timeless to me.

Jigglytuffy says:

Power Station. Arcadia was boring to me and over-done.

vertigo says:

both !!
Arcadia was DD but PS brought some more salt&pepper

mia says:

Luna says:

I've always enjoyed heavier and funkier music.

34. The Fab Five vs. The Fab Four

Duran Duran, Rolling Stone no. 414, February 1984
Buy This at Allposters.com

The press were quick to dub Duran Duran "The Fab Five" for their prominence in the 80s musical "British Invasion" of the United States. But can you really compare Duran Duran to the original "Fab Four" - that is, The Beatles? Which band do you think is better (if you can even choose at all?)

Who do you prefer: The Fab Five (Duran Duran) or The Fab Four (The Beatles)?

Loading

The Fab Five (Duran Duran)

Talking4Free says:

I know that The Beatles were legendary during the 60's and 70's. Their impact lingers and lyrics/music/talent is undisputed. That being said, for me, growing up in the beginning of the 80's, Duran Duran tops it. I think MTV had a lot to do with that, too, as there was more access to the band. Further, their talents and vision have transcended time, more years than perhaps the Beatles as the Fab 5 of their time.

Heloisa says:

Duran Duran

Steph says:

I can admire The Beatles but DD is part of my generation so definitely DD.

DW says:

Beatles were before my time, but they're iconic and awesome. More important than DD in the 20th century for certain.

Vix says:

Duran hands down because they induce more of an emotional response in me... and that's what I look for in music. Like The Beatles a lot though.

marcia lemes says:

well ... I'm super fan of the group, so the best of all only the FAB 5, if only because I know and like the BEATLES, but are of a generation that did not get.

dutch says:

Duran offcourse!

susie. says:

Duran Duran !! they are special, and always will be. They are underrated, Simon is a songwriting genuis, their songs have had a place in my heart for 29 years and will carry on doing so.

Cindi Moulton says:

Duran duran:-) you can feel how much they love us back. They can be silly & funny. They never give up. They love each other like brothers.

Elsie says:

Duran Duran.

Dkprincess6 says:

The Fab Five. I've never been a Beatles fan, but I like Duran Duran.

G Pereira says:

the fab five

Gina says:

DD

Karen says:

Duran Duran, because they are both totally different groups in so many ways that you cannot compare them.

Mel says:

duran duran

Krista says:

Duran Duran forever and always. Beatles are my Mom's band. ;-)

Ale says:

I'm me, my generation, my time...not my dad's!

Susan says:

Forced to make a choice, it would be Duran, but where is the option for a draw??? Both are equally fantastic bands whose music I love and it is difficult to choose!

andrea says:

I know i am from Liverpool but its the fab 5 for me all the way

Julie says:

Technically Duran are now the Fab Four too!

The Fab Four (The Beatles)

madoc says:

My all-time favorite would have been "John Lennon and the Fab Five"
I wish there were three options to vote on, if i have to choose, it is the Beatles by a very narrow margin, only because I knew them for longer.

Mr. X says:

I've been a Duran Duran fans for ages, but they're not in the same league as the Beatles.

skintwinkie says:

Duran is one of my favorite bands, but the Beatles released more material in only seven Years, they were also the kings of re-invention, before reinvention really existed

sockii says:

I'm a fan of both, but as much as I love Duran Duran I have to give it to The Beatles for their legacy and lasting musical importance.
