Adventure Fired His Soul But Love Branded His Heart in Durango
Hallmark Hall of Fame's Durango is a made-for-television movie based on John B. Keane's novel of the same name. A true story, it is set in rural Ireland during the Second World War and tells the story of the October cattle drive of Tubberlick.
It is a simple, straightforward story, one of adventure, love, money and integrity. It features beautiful music and some of the amazing scenery of Ireland.
Unfortunately for fans of Hallmark's Durango or for those who have yet to see it but who want to, it has not been released on DVD yet. I would not quite categorize it as a rare movie because it is readily and affordably available on VHS videotape. If you want to own a copy of this movie, at this point in time, it will have to be on video tape.
"It's safe to say we're doing God's work, which is helping the poor - namely ourselves."

Sometimes it's comforting to watch a film that lets you know in its first minutes just where it's headed. ''Durango'' telegraphs its trajectory immediately.
Amazon Customer Reviews of Durango
"A feel-good movie that makes you care for all the characters in it, it is nice to see Hallmark stick close to the book and put the story before the Irish scenery which is undeniably gorgeous. It's a great movie for the whole family with a little something in it for everyone, and it also teaches you the positive outcome of standing up for something you believe in." ~ Reviews No More
"John B Keane's book was done justice by this movie. This movie has everything, a love story, action, historical facts and humour. It is definitely worth a look." ~ A Customer
"What is great about the movie is how it weaves a strong romantic story with an important but true tale of farmers battling to get a fair price for the product, in this case cattle. The beautiful Irish scenery adds much to the story as does the wonderful uplifting music score...The lead male and female characters, two young people in love, are both endearing characters and easy to root for. What's also nice is this story is appropriate for all ages, and it has enough humor in it to balance the more dramatically tense moments...It's just one of those movies that leaves you feeling good after you watch it." ~ Harvest

John B. Keane's Durango, The Book
A young man running a farm after his father has passed away realizes that the price of cattle should be going up because Britain needs to feed its troops and also realizes that the price being offered locally is unfair and organizes a cattle trive to Trallock Fair.
He is in love with his neighbor's daughter but her strong willed father makes declaring his feelings a scary proposition and meanwhile, another woman is trying to steal his eye.
The cattle drive is the main part of the story but it is filled with the same interesting characters found in the movie including an Irish army deserter and a motorcycle-riding minister.
Amazon says, "Keane tells his story with a wink in his eye and a voice inflated to just the right mock-epic Blarney pitch for this warm, delightful and thoroughly unbelievable tale."
Durango Movie Soundtrack
The music score was written by Mark McKenzie and performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Film Tracks says that the score has as much beauty as the scenery does and that it takes every opportunity to play upon the beautiful landscape. They summarize by saying that this soundtrack is "45 minutes of the most relaxing Irish-flavored underscore available today."
