Great lens, I didn't realize that I might be able to find out more about my Dutch ancestors for free. Free is always good! Thanks!

Thanks, this looks like a good place to start my search. i just found out my great grandmother came from Holland, but that is about all we know at this stage. We also not sure sure on the correct spelling of the surname. Its van Loggenberg, but apparently there are a few different spelling permutations.
  • mizrae Apr 26, 2012 @ 7:34 am | delete
Just out of curiosity, did your family drop the "van" when they arrived in America as my family did? My grandfather came from Holland as well.

This is going to be a very useful lens for me. My surname is Scott so I may be a Border Reiver but I might just as well be descended from Huguenot refugees with the surname Schott who moved from the Netherlands to Lancashire. I have problems following my father's father's line past four generations, so maybe this will give me a chance to come back the other way

This is a very helpful lens, thank you! I was wondering you know how I can trace my Great Grandpa who was in the Dutch East Indies Army from about 1895 until the 1920s. I would love to know more about what he did there, but understand that it was a period of history that Dutch people would rather forget about. His name was Willem van der Vlerk and he was a colonel, there is a wikipedia article on him but I want to explore further. Any tips would be much appreciated!
  • Henk Mar 4, 2012 @ 8:54 am | delete
Archives of the Dutch East Indies army are kept at the Dutch National Archive in Den Haag. You can probably reconstruct his military career there, but you would have to visit The Netherlands.

The online Dutch newspaper archive at http://kranten.kb.nl/ will probably have a lot of information.

I did research on my family. On my mother side I was able to trace back to the their first settlement in Canada around 1670, on my father side I was able to go back to about 1650 in France. No Dutch roots at all. I do have French, Scottish, British, Irish and certainly also metis (French / Huron tribe mix) blood like many many French canadian.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me trace my family history, I have my grandparents and great grandparents information but would like to find out more about my great grandfather, he helped hide the jews in the second world war, he was tortured by the natzis but never gave up the location. I know there is a tree planted after him and he got an award with the queen for his role in the war but I cant find any written information about it. would anyone be able to point me in the right direction. He lived in Zutphen in the second world war.

    thanks
    Jo
  • Henk Oct 18, 2010 @ 12:15 am | delete
    Hi Jo,
You don't give any details (like names), so I can only give you some general hints.
NIOD (http://www.niod.nl/), the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation, has many resources related to the second world war.
You can browse war-time newspapers at http://kranten.kb.nl/ (in Dutch, of course).
The War Grave Foundation (http://www.ogs.nl/) has an online database of war victims.
The website Memories of The Netherlands has many war-time resources (http://www.geheugenvannederland.nl/?/nl/themas/geschiedenis_en_samenleving/oorlog).
Details about the award of your ggrandfather can probably be found in the Dutch national archive in The Hague (but probably not online).
    Good luck,
    Henk

Thank you Henk for all the information will try to have a look.
My great grand father is Gerrit Jan Bril he was born in zutphen in 1909.
The house he used to hide the jews was built around a square and from memory i think the trap door to the under ground passages were in the horse stables. I believe the house is a monument now but i was so young when we heard the stories.

    thanks

  • Henk Sep 7, 2010 @ 6:49 pm | delete
In Genlias, http://www.genlias.nl/, you can find their marriage: Henderikus Meijer, 25, born in Muntendam, son of Harmannus Hinderikus Meijer and Anna Duurken, married Lena Schomaker, 27, born in Odoorn, daughter of Lambert Schomaker (a.k.a. Schoemaker) and Johanna Sanders, on 3 June 1905 in Oude Pekela, province Groningen.
His birth is also on Genlias: Henderikus Meijer, male, born 17 June 1879 in Muntendam, son of Harmannus Hinderikus Meijer, butcher, and Anna Duurken. There are also several siblings on Genlias.

    Hello,
I am working with others on the CBG forum but we are having trouble finding out about Jan Brinkhuis born in Amsterdam in 1894 to Albert Brinkhuis 1866 and Christina Tammerijn 1863. Jan's brother was my grandfather Albert Brinkhuis (1892) and we don't know when Jan died or if he had children. Can you help?
  • Henk Aug 15, 2010 @ 10:54 pm | delete
    Dear Sharon,
It's probably best to wait for the "persoonskaart". In the meantime you could try to search some of the indexes in the (paid) databases of the Amsterdam City Archive, https://stadsarchief.amsterdam.nl/english/archives_database/genealogy/index.en.html.

    Dear Henk,
Thank you for your help. It is very important to my mother (Maude Brinkhuis 1926) who is still living and in her 80s. She is an only child and would like to connect with any relatives she might have in Holland on the Brinkhuis side. She speaks fluent Dutch and we have always been very proud of our Dutch heritage. Thanks again.

    Dear Richard,

Birth records for Rotterdam are online, but I am unable to find Lucas van Wijk. I expect he was not born in Rotterdam.

Genlias has the birth records of two children of Lucas van Wijk and Johanna Cornelia Wilhelmina Frese: Neeltje Agnes van Wijk, born 17 March 1870 in Kralingen, and Agnes Johanna van Wijk, born 26 September 1873, also in Kralingen. Kralingen used to be a separate town, but is now part of Rotterdam.

    Dear Gerry,

    For Leiden use http://www.leiden.digitalestamboom.nl/ , for 's-Gravenhage http://www.denhaag.nl/smartsite.html?id=65346

Bussum marriages (1817-1922) and Gorinchem marriages (1812-1922) are in Genlias, but births and deaths are not online yet. Eventually, they will be added to Genlias - be patient.

Once you hit a brick wall online, you should continue offline: Read "Offline Dutch genealogy", an article that I wrote last year for my newsletter: http://newsletter.traceyourdutchroots.com/nl200804.htm

I'm hitting a wall with my ancestors. I have a great grandfather (Cornelis Reusen born abt 1843 in Gorinchem) and his father, Jacob Reusen, who was married to Clasina Stam (her christening was 31 Dec 1794) but I haven't found any more info on them. I tried Genalis but nothing else came up. Is there something else I can try. Most of my ancestors were from Leiden, Gravenhage, Bussum, Gorunchem. Do you have any suggestions? Any help will be appreciated.

Most of my info has come from Ancestry and family search. Thank you.
  • Hans Simonis Jun 9, 2010 @ 7:59 am | delete
    Hello Gerry,
I don't know if you have had any luck in finding out more about your Reus(s)en ancestors since August 2009, If not, maybe I can help you.
Cornelis Reusen was born in Gorinchem on March 26,1843, indeed son of Jacob Reusen (born Gorinchem November 8, 1814) and of Clasina/Klazina Stam. Her christening was absolutely NOT in 1794, she would then have been 60 years of age at the birth of her last child. The marriage certificate on Genlias says that she is 21 at her marriage (Gorinchem May 24, 1837), so born about 1816, daughter of Cornelis Verheij Stam and Anna van Straaten. The couple Jacob Reusen and Clasina Stam had at least eight children, but Cornelis is the only one I have some info about. He married two times, first Gorinchem September 18, 1867 Louisa Maria Ponne, second Leiden February 17, 1875 Pietertje van der Lof.

    Cheers

Genlias lists the marriage of Johannes Molenaar and Adriaantje Marijtje de Haan (1870 in Pernis) and the birth of two children: Jan (1870) and Cornelis (1871). Genlias also has the marriages of three children: Willem Kornelis Molenaar and Jacoba Groenendijk (1887), Jan Molenaar and Napoline Verginia Kassels (1893), and Cornelis Molenaar and Niesje Hendrika Samsom (1894).

There may have been more children.
