Hello! I am interested in renting an adult tricycle when i am in Belgium (where we also ride bikes!). I have multiple sclerosis and cannot balance on a bike. do you know anyplace to buy an adult trike in either Netherlands or Belgium?

The fear of bike-theft is much less so in the Waddenislands, I can not talk about any other place though.

    I live in Arnhem (Gelderland),

Believe me its bad. 2 bikes where stolen in 3 moth time. I had to buy a lock that's more expensive then my bike!

The first one that got stolen was parked and double locked in front of my home, and I saw the guy cycle of with my bike! Called the police but they could't really help. Plus its not really a priority for them.

It is a great article on the dutch biking culture. I came here to look for the what it has for a tourist. Could u please let tourists like me know whether its safe and other details. If you can point to some website or article i wud be thankful. :)
  • spirituality Feb 12, 2011 @ 4:22 am | delete
Sure, it's safe for tourists to bike in the Netherlands. Just rent a bike at the train station and you're set. Do remember to lock your bike when you leave it somewhere.

Great ;ens about bikes and you did not skip any detail. Do you go on long cycling trips?
  • spirituality Dec 20, 2010 @ 8:17 am | delete
Honestly, no, I don't. I do go everywhere by bike and public transportation though.

I remember being in Amsterdam and seeing thousands of bikes parking next to the railway station.

I haven't been to the Netherlands yet but we rented bikes in Copenhagen once and it was a fun adventure...many other bike riders and lots of bike bells ringing. I didn't see anyone there riding a bike while pulling an empty bike alongside them like in your video...or biking in high heels...so the Dutch get bonus points for that.

Oh I would love, absolutely love it if commuting on bicycles was like that here in the US. (of course having train transportation would be nice too) Here, you really do put your life in your own hands if you try this in most cities. :(

I lived in Holland most of my life, and yes, cycled everywhere. I used to bike to school every day 12KM to school, and 12KM back, rain or shine. It's a way of life. I now live in Dallas where cycling is more or less only for those with a death wish (except for in parks and such).

Also, here's a nice video to add to your lens, it will give people that are not familiar with how many cyclists there actually are and what that means in terms of traffic, a good idea:

A lovely lens, and your grandma looks great!

I've had the pleasure of bike riding in the Netherlands - highly recommended that others try it if they have the chance.

When we spent a day in Amsterdam on our return to the states, we got to see BIKES BIKES and more BIKES -- I've probably got a picture someplace -- what an awesome sight.
  • spirituality Apr 7, 2009 @ 9:09 am | delete
Brenda: as you might expect it depends on how far you live from the place where you work. People drive to work here enough that we have traffic jams, and many of them. But many people still bike to work or to the supermarket.

I want to go biking in the Netherlands!

How far do you have to travel when you go about your daily business? If my husband had to bike to work, I'm not sure how long it would take to bike downtown. It takes 30 minutes on a bus!

I think this lens could be improved by a picture of Katinka biking in her skirt! Any chance that will happen?

    Blessed by a squidangel :)

well, I bike too school every day- that means: 12 kilometers to school, and 12 kilometers back. with the bus, it would take me an hour. by bike, 45 minutes :P but that's because I live in the countryside. (still: not the countryside you have in for example thet US. )
  • Ylliks Apr 3, 2009 @ 4:14 am | delete
Being Dutch myself I can only subscribe to what's being said here: the Netherlands is a fun place to ride a bike!

I love biking, but where I live it is somttimes difficult because of the snow! It was a natural hobby to take up after I quit running marathons.
  • GrowWear Dec 21, 2008 @ 8:04 pm | delete
Love bicycling! Wish it were more common as a way of life here in the US.
  • surfsusan Aug 23, 2008 @ 6:31 am | delete
Greetings from Denmark, yes I too bike every day. Also when I go shopping.
  • Janet Aug 21, 2008 @ 8:58 pm | delete
I am learning to ride to get ready for a bike tour in Holland in early 2009. A place full of bikers is a strange sight here in the USA where cars rule the road.

I miss biking. This is really good for health and for the environment. And also since the gas are getting high. Giving 5*!

I'd love to bike through the Netherlands some day. It is relatively flat around our home - except for the hill that the house is on - makes going for a ride easy, but coming home can be exhausing after 3 miles nearly all up hill.

Hi. What about Denmark? If bikes aren't used in Denmark as much as in Holland - it must be a close second - no?

But China - yeah, that's the most I've seen. The bike paths are as wide as normal streets. And if you go the wrong way - ow!
  • monopoly Jun 17, 2008 @ 4:23 pm | delete
Great lens - 5 stars! Bike thieves in Holland too, huh? Love the vision of TONS of bikes parked together - and love the diea of biking past tulips and windmills! For Articles, News and Resources on Bicycles, check out Bicycles. From mountain bikes to racing bikes to parts!

I was able to do some bike riding in the Netherlands. It was a lot more fun than visiting another claustrophobic museum. Well done!
