I Want A Portable DVD Player

Portable DVD player makes great birthday gift

We only have one television set in our house -- and really for a family of three that is plenty. My theory has always been that if we buy another TV then we will simply watch more television and is there anyone who NEEDS to watch more TV? Also, when I have free time or (more often) am just too tired to enjoy reading but need to unwind a bit after work or before bed then I like to watch a little television. Of course, truth be told, I don't actually watch much in the way of TV. More frequently I watch DVDs. Of course the problem is that my husband and son haven't gotten used to negotiating between themselves for TV and game time -- which leaves me out in the cold. This is why I have decided that I want a portable DVD player for my birthday -- I think it is a great birthday gift idea. Read on for my reasons!

Do you have a portable DVD player?

I considered buying a small television with a built-in DVD player but I really like the portability as I can easily move this player to wherever I want to be. I can just as easily curl up in bed to watch a DVD before going to sleep or I can pop in a DVD to entertain myself while I'm folding laundry in the kitchen.

Why did you buy your portable DVD player?

Why a portable DVD player is a great gift idea

Is it for someone you know, too?

  1. DVDs are my first choice for viewing
  2. Portability is important as I watch in different rooms and for different reasons
  3. Cost is a factor (many portable DVD players are cheaper than most TV-DVD combos)
  4. Ability to travel is a good benefit
  5. I don't like using my computer as a DVD player

Considerations when buying a portable player

  • Price range -- there are a lot of options out there so it is good to start here with what you can afford and feel comfortable paying for this device --- of course some of the other considerations will help calculate your price point
  • How you will use your player -- is it going to travel, ride in the car, or stay home -- this will help you determine the size and weight of your preferred player as well as the importance of options
  • Who will use your player -- is this a gift for an older relative who isn't very techno savvy, will is travel in the car to entertain small children, or be used at home by your teenagers -- considering this will help determine the best size, weight, and durability of your portable player
  • Media formats -- of course this depends on how and who will use the portable player -- but many new models offer options in addition to traditional DVD formats.
  • Battery life -- this is really important when you are considering a truly portable model for travel but if you plan to use your portable player at home or in a car where it can be plugged in then life (as well as the size and weight) of the battery may not matter as much
  • Which options are important to you -- do you want/need wireless connectivity, ability to connect to a TV, dual screens, headphone jacks, etc. Do a lot of shopping in your price range and really think about whether or not you want/need the options that might be raising the price of your portable player

Shopping for a portable player

You can buy portable DVD players online and in stores but unless you have already done extensive research it is smart to take advantage of both options BEFORE you buy.

Use online electronics stores (reputable ones that you already know and trust) to read customer reviews but you should also take time to look at some real portable players in stores just to see for yourself the size of the screen, the weight of the battery and portable player, and how sturdy the unit seems.
