What is DVD Region Coding and how does this affect me?

Please rate this entry and let people know how helpful it has been!

DVD Region coding is a security system introduced to DVD at the request of Hollywood's major studios to ensure that DVDs released and sold in one region will not play on DVD machines in other regions.

This has been done so that movie distributors therefore maintain control over release dates of their films, as well as enabling discs to be produced that conform to different censorship laws, language and subtitle requirements.

When a DVD disc is manufactured, a region code is applied at the authoring stage such that the final disc will play only on those players distributed in the designated world region.

There are 6 regions throughout the world:

Region 1 - Canada, United States and its Territories
Region 2 - Japan, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East
Region 3 - Southeast Asia and East Asia
Region 4 - Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central and South America
Region 5 - Indian Subcontinent, Former Soviet Union and Africa
Region 6 - China

Additionally, DVDs may be encoded as Region 0 or Region All, which means that they are compatible in all regions.

Traditionally, DVD players are also programmed with a Region Code. To be able to play a DVD, the region codes of both the DVD Player and DVD must be the same!

With the explosion of online purchases, region coding has become a major issue. As long as purchasing a DVD from an overseas country does not impinge on, or break any copywrite laws, a person may purchase a DVD from Australia to play in the USA and vice versa. If the DVD player is not "multi zoned" or "multi region", then there will be problems.

How do you remedy "Region Coded" DVD players?

Most mainstream DVD players (including those in computers) have codes that may be entered via the Remote Control. These codes "reprogram" the Player to allow it to read DVDs in other zones.

DVD UNLOCKER is a program that has 1500+ codes for mainstream DVD player, so that reprogramming may be achieved quickly and easily.

Why Not Just Download Movies?

It's a great option.....

It is possible to download full length movies for free - legally. Absolutely, completely but only if you join one of the legal movie download sites that abound.

Think about it, if you download movies for free - how would the movies be produced and get to market? There must be some money changing hands to keep the industry functioning.

The most common way to download full length movies is to use Peer2Peer (P2P) programs. This enables a movie to be downloaded very quickly. However, P2P is not without its' issues. P2P is popular amongst the illegal download sites, where you can get movies for free and as such, the downloaded movie oftens contains Trojans, Malware and Viruses and can leave your computer open to exploitation from the download network.

Another concern reported about the movies downloaded from free download sites is that they can be mis-categorized and the viewer may be downloading "undesirable" material.

Legal downloadable movie sites rely on the quality of their product being exceptional and being correctly categorized. As such, you are far safer joining a legal movie download site and paying the fee that is required. When you consider that the fee that these membership sites command, is possible the cost of 1 or 2 new release DVDs, it is well worth it. For the quality of the download and the safety that you will receive, don't even look at the free sites.

As you pay a one time joining fee for these sites, your price per movie is neglible and depending on how many movies you download can be almost nothing over time.

Joining a download movie site has many benefits for those looking to download full lenght movies. The most important benefit is the fact that your full length movies will be free from spyware, malware and viruses. Secondly, there are no rental fees or late fines (what could be better than that?). As you are paying a free to join the free download movie site, the operators of the site can afford to invest in infrastructure that ensures a high quality, high speed download, it is estimated that it takes about 10 minutes to download a full length movie. The free download movie site is not just limited to movies either, you can download TV shows, music and games as well as being able to easily search for the movie you are looking for. Finally, it is completely legal and incredibly low cost.

Wouldn't it be great to decide which movie you wanted to watch next, login to your free download movie site, download it in 10 minutes and settle down for the night?
