Dwarf Racing - What Do You Think of it?

Dwarf Racing May Be Politically Incorrect, But If the Little People Involved Think it's Fun, Then Why Not

Dwarf racing is politically incorrect, so can it also be considered fun?

So I am watching the evening news and there it is - "Australian horse racing officials have been slammed for holding a dwarf racing competition called the 'Midget Cup.'" I am embarrassed to admit it, but I burst in to laughter.

Is Dwarf racing a sport? Well, probably not (unless you are in Australia - where they also invented dwarf tossing). Is it Politically Correct? Another, probably not. However, as the articles below point out, the organizers and the participants all saw the event as "harmless fun." So, does this make it ok?

The race was part of Victoria state's annual carnival. It took place between horse events at the Cranbourne Cup on 11 October, 2009. It involved three men running along a 50-metre course. On each of their backs was a dwarf dressed in jockey silks. The event has been denounced by government officials and advocacy groups.

Quick: What's Your Initial Reaction to Dwarf Racing?

Easiest Way to Explain this Event is with Video

Here are two videos of the event. Both show the same basic footage, although the commentary is quite different. In the first video only the race is seen and the announcer is quite negative about the event. The second, longer video, show interviews with participant and highlights the event as fun for all.

I think we all agree it's Politically Incorrect. So the question becomes: If the people involved see it as fun, is it ok?

Yes, you're right! This is so ridiculous that I had to laugh.

throw a swarf around!!

mysticmama says:

I think that if the little people are happy with it, then we have no business sticking our nose in their business ...too many people use political correctedness as an excuse for their own judgemental behavior to the point where PC doesn't mean much any more.

Superman says:

i hired them they were so funny go boys you are legends :0

pts says:

yes

spirituality says:

I didn't smile at the video at all, but I see no reason to ban this. It IS ridiculous but this could easily be seen as short people finally having a hoot at the expense of us tall folks. I mean we're all adults aren't we?

OhMe says:

I think they should be free to have the Midget Race and if the dwarfs find it offensive then they don't have to participate and that will be the end of it but it looked like everyone was having fun.

Joan4 says:

Looks like they are all having fun! Why not?

theraggededge says:

They're adults over 18 - let them choose. It was just a piggyback race and looks like it was fun for everyone... and life should be fun!

kab says:

They did choose to participate, right? Freedom, baby!

The_Party_Animal says:

I say yes - if they choose to be part of this and are having fun - what harm is it?

amy1980 says:

let them run if they aren't getting hurt. They should have that choice. Just like I have the choice not to watch because I find it disagreeable (and I didn't laugh).

No way, Monkeybrain! It is politically inappropriate and should be banned.

beth says:

I have to agree with susan - tacky

susannaduffy says:

I'm not saying 'Ban it'. I'm saying it's downright tacky.

LeanneChesser says:

Well, it's a tough question because I can't dictate what's right or wrong for others, only for myself. But to me, it's not OK. Personally, I think it demeans little people who are human beings, not carnival objects. I'm rewording the duel response for myself to say, "No way, Monkeybrain! It's politically inappropriate." I'll leave out the "should be banned" part.

Do You Want To Go To Australia?

You might want to pick up a tour book or DVD. You probably won't see Dwarf racing however, as it sounds like it is being canceled for future events. Click on any of these Australia items for more information.
