All About the Films and Shows of The Funniest Man Alive

Dylan Moran is best known as Bernard Black from Black Books - and deservedly so, as it's a very funny and brilliant show - but he's also appeared in a lot of other films and television shows, from the very first unknown gem How Do You Want Me? to the much more famous Zombie Romance Comedy Shaun of the Dead. He has also become famous for his stand-up comedy skits at Comedy Festivals and on tour.

I am a huge fan of his humour and performances and have watched Black Books multiple times, and even managed to see one of his llive shows. Sadly, living in New Zealand, it is quite hard to get more, as much of his work is poorly known and restricted to being published in the UK.

But don't despair! For it is ALL on Youtube in some form, and most of it can be found on Amazon (they just won't ship it to New Zealand because of region copywrite nastiness)... and here his career has been organised for easy viewing!

Enjoy, And try not to laugh too hard, you'll wake the children. And then they'll want you to buy it for them - and I don't recommend that, as you'll not see children nor DVDs again for at least three months, until they crawl out to wash the mould off. You'll just hear them laughing... and you'll worry about how much they understand. (In generally, I'd recommend Dylan Moran's performances and films to kids of at least ten, in some cases a lot older, depending on the film).

Black Books was Dylan Moran's Best Work!

Or was it?

Black Books was the TV show he became famous for - but he's also appeared in a number of other films and shows, and has been a regular on the stand-up circuit. I still favour Black Books - partly because I haven't seen all the others yet! (Some I can't even get in New Zealand, but luckily most of them are on YouTube, and now on this lens). If you're not sure, then keep reading to remind yourself what else he actually did, have a look at some of the video clips then come back up and chip in!

Dylan Moran as Bernard Black from Black Books

Dylan MoranFilms and TV ShowsLive AppearancesInterviews and QuotesThe Guestbook and Goodbye

Dylan Moran has appeared in over a dozen films and televisions series in the last ten years. Most of them are comedies, usually of the black humour kind. While his most famous is the fantastically hilarious Black Books, many of the others are worth checking out. If you have ten minutes to spare on this page, watch Tell it to the Fishes, an ironic short film. He's appeared alongside with many of the current 'names' in British comedy - Simon Pegg, Bill Bailey, Nick Frost, Tamsin Greig - either in supporting roles or as a main lead.

How Do You Want Me? (1998)

Television series starring Dylan Moran and Charlotte Coleman

How Do You Want Me? was Dylan Moran's first major role. He plays naive townie Ian Lyons, who has just married Lisa Yardley (Charlotte Coleman). He then has to move to the country back to her home - the village of Snowle, and cope somehow with her ex-boyfriend, her rather unpleasant father, her brother, and the rest of the village.

The first six episodes (No One Can Hear You Scream, Floppy But Not Too Floppy, Monstrous, Woof!, The Hidden World Of Country Fire Stations, Sausage, Balloon, Bum) were broadcast from 24th February until 31st March, 1998.

The second six were broadcast in 1999, from 10th November until 22nd December (White Pubic Hair, I'm Not An Alcoholic, Nude Modelling Module, Bad Builders, Ready Steady Kill, The Pleasures Of Village Life)

It was very well received and cut short by the early death of Charlotte Coleman from an asthma attack in 2001.

"An incredibly subtle, persuasive comedy (from the writer of Men Behaving Badly!!) that has more charm (particularly in scenes between Charlotte Coleman and Dylan Moran) than Hugh Grant's grin.
The supporting cast are one of the best ensembles ever in a British comedy from Frank Finlay to Emma Chambers."

Black Books (2000-2004)

The complete(ly awesome) television series

This is the series that made him famous. It won the BAFTA for Best Situation Comedy in 2001 and 2005, and a Bronze Rose at the Festival Rose d'Or of Montreux in 2001. And I could recap my favourite parts, describe the bookshop with its little molluscs, the bees that Manny (Bill Bailey) ate, neurotic Fran (Tamsin Greig), and introverted Bernard (Dylan Moran) - but then I would start quoting. And then I could not stop.

I've rewatched the whole series more times than I can count - buy them in one collection because when you reach the end, you won't want to stop. The best episodes are the first in each series - the Little Book of Calm is a classic, and as for the time when Manny leaves Bernard to go work for the shop next door (in which Simon Pegg makes a terrifying appearance and bribes him with muffins and a doo-di-ti-doo card)...

No. I mustn't start. If you haven't seen Black Books then buy it! Buy it now! And if you have, I'll just mention to you that International Black Books Quote day is on the 22nd of March!

Black Books centers around the foul tempered and wildly eccentric bookshop owner Bernard Black (Dylan Moran). Bernard's devotion to the twin pleasures of drunkenness and willful antagonism deepens and enriches both his life and that of Manny (Bill Bailey), his assistant. Bearded, gentle, sweet and good, Manny is everything that Bernard isn't and is punished by Bernard relentlessly just for the crime of existing. They depend on each other for meaning as Fran (Tamsin Greig), their oldest friend, depends on them for distraction. Black Books is a haven of books, wine and conversation, the only threat to the group's peace and prosperity is their own limitless stupidity.

“Tamsin Grieg ('Fran') will be playing Miss Cripslock in Terry Pratchett's Going Postal, comin”

The Little Book of Calm

The perfect gift for a Black Books fan - Add a drop of lavender to milk. Leave town with an orange, and pretend you're laughing at it.

If you've never seen Black Books you will only be able to watch in bemusement as the recipient startles, sniggers, and then breaks down in laughter when you present them with The Little Book of Calm.

This book - or a similar tiny book along the same vein, features prominently in the very first episode, in which stressed out Manny accidentally swallows it (after buying it from Bernard) and then absorbs it into his system (mystifying his doctor), and wanders out of the hospital, beaming beautifically, and spouting little gems of philosophy from the book.

Reading the Amazon reviews, most of the people buying this are doing so because of Black Books !

"I am buying this book for my friend as an inside joke, because we both love the show "Black Books". However, it looks like it has some pretty good insights. It's certainly positive! "

"I bought this to go with another gift (Black Books DVDs) and it was a hit. Hi-larious. And calming."

'Find a copy of the English series Black Books (it played latenight CBC), if the book doesn't make you calm, at least it can make you laugh. "

Rejection - Short Film

A writer's film: extra from Black Books

This very short black and white film was included on the complete Black Books. You can't watch it here as embedding is disabled, but you can open it on YouTube from the video below.

Basically, Bernard Black recieves a letter from a would-be publisher regarding his manuscript, and deals with it in a mature and sensible fashion, in a manner likely to be much appreciated by would-be authors the world over.

It's also especially amusing if you've watched Black Books, as his writing aspirations are revealed by Fran in a fit of one-up-manship during one of their fights. He wrote poorly disguised wish fulfillment about Brendan Blake "Feared by men and admired by women" and "Larry his barely hominoid, milk-fed gimp."

The Actors (2003)

A 2003 Film written and directed by Conor McPherson

Dylan Moran plays Tom Quirke in the hard-to-find film The Actors. In this film a pair of poor actors set out to impersonate the debtee of a Dublin gangster in order to swindle him out of his money - helped along by a genius little girl. It's not the best of his films by a long shot (although given the high quality of the competition...) but is basically a lightweight comedy with some big name actors.

It's not sold in the US and can only be found as Region 2, or on YouTube.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

A romantic comedy with zombies and Simon Pegg. A zom-rom-com?

Ah yes, Shaun of the Dead - the Zombie horror-spoof that catapaulted Simon Pegg into the international eye. There's plenty of horror here, but along with the screams wil be screams of laughter. It's been named in various magazines and polls as the best horror and comedy show of the decade, and of all time. It also had a lot of very notable British comedians and comic actors - basically reading like a who's who of current British comedy shows, with appearances from actors from Black Books, Green Wing, Spaced, Little Britain, The Office, The League of Gentlemen and others.

Dylan Moran played David - the sulky friend of Liz, Shaun's ex-girlfriend. He spends the time undermining Shaun and being chased by zombies.

Run Fatboy Run (2007)

Romantic Comedy Film with Simon Pegg

Another romantic comedy with Simon Pegg! But with less rotting, walking corpses this time. In Run Fatboy Run Dennis (Simon pegg) decides to prove himself, outcompete his rival and get his girlfriend back (he's always breaking up with his girlfriend...) by running the Nike River Marathon. Drama, humour and justification ensues.

Dylan Moran plays Gordon - one of Dennis' 'coaches', and ends the film by playing on Dennis' succes to seduce two attractive women in bikinis.

A Film With Me In It (2008)

A grimmer sort of comedy

I actually didn't read the descriptin for this film and went to watch it on a whim, based on it starring Dylan Moran. I walked out halfway through - not because it was bad but because I have no stomach for the disasters that wind themselves tighter and tighter, trapping the characters in its deadly coils, and all you can do is watch and know that, however blackly humourous, it's only going to get worse. Also I have little stomach for gruesome death.

Dylan Moran plays the down-and-out writer Pierce, and sidekick to the main character, Mark, and plays it very well - until the twists started, I was really enjoying the film. It is a good film, but not for the squeamish. When Mark's brother, landlord, girlfriend and dog are killed in a series of freak accidents, he runs to his neighbour Pierce for help. As the series of deaths would appear suspicious, aspiring writer Pierce advises Mark not to call the police, and instead the two try to re-work the days events as if they were a film script.

Live Appearances

Dylan Moran at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2007

Dylan MoranFilms and TV ShowsLive AppearancesInterviews and QuotesThe Guestbook and Goodbye

Originally, Dylan Moran was a stand-up comic, and after Black Books he went back to it, only on a much larger scale. He's done several tours around the world with different shows, and I've been to two of them! There are a lot of videos online (usually on YouTube) from his live appearances, and I can assure you that the extremely funny one I saw in Auckland, New Zealand, in an old theatre that caught fire the very next night, was typical. As was the one I saw in 2009 in a larger theatre up the road.

He's good at tailoring the performance to each audience, deals with hecklers very well, has a much rougher voice than you'd expect, and (apparently) drinks a lot of wine all through. His live comedy appearances are different from his films - but he's really good at them. And yes, his stand-up act is a lot like someone gave Bernard Black too much wine and let him loose on an audience!

The writer of Father Ted and the IT Crowd - and the co-writer of Black Books

I had to buy the complete series for my parents - it was sad, watching the addiction in action, the way they leapt upon this digital crack and clutched at it with greedy hands. The obsessive way they had to get their fix each night, the desperation and withdrawal when they missed a day. The hysterics, mania and wild laughter that the shows induced.

Avoid this series. You will only inflict upon yourself the horror of mad irish priests, and fall prey to the terrible, terrible addiction.

Father Ted is one of those rare sitcoms that defies categorization--it owes as much to Flann O'Brien and Samuel Beckett as it does to Monty Python--and its blend of satire, character comedy, and anarchic surrealism has made it a cult favorite around the world.

Exiled to remote Craggy Island, Father Ted Crilley shares a house with the breathtakingly stupid Father Dougal and the constantly inebriated Father Jack, who has a small vocabulary and a taste for furniture polish. Their housekeeper, Mrs. Doyle, takes care of them with a never-ending supply of tea and sandwiches: "Go on now, Father, won't you try one? They're diagonal." Together they fight boredom by dressing up as Elvis, startling ducks at the fair, and provoking nuns.
