How To Decide What Size Rug To Use

It can be quite a complex issue when it comes to selecting the right size of area rug. But it can be kept simple by remembering that at the end of the day; it is your house and you should pick whatever size rug you are content with. There are however, some basic considerations and a few straightforward rules which can assist when trying to decide what size of area rug to decorate your room with.

Always set out your furnishings in the room before picking your rug, this will allow you to assess what size and shape of area rug would best suit. It will also let you ensure that the rug does not breach any of these basic rules set out in the rest of this article.

The first guideline that most interior designers will tell you is to leave at least 18" of gap around the edges of your rug. Any less than this and it will make the area seem smaller. In smaller rooms you may reduce this down to as little as 8", as the shrinking effect is not as emphasized in a small sized room.

If you are going to lay an area rug beneath your dining table with chairs around it, then it is best to leave at least 24" of rug around the table. This will allow for the easy movement of chairs, so that people may sit at the table without the chair legs catching on the edge of the rug. This not only protects the edges of the rug but is much safer.

When a rug is placed under a bed, a similar overlap needs to be left. For a King or Queen sized bed, this should be around 24" in width. For a standard double or single bed, then it can be reduced to 12". If your bed is offset within a smaller room, or is placed against a wall, you can adjust the size of the rug accordingly, or simply leave a larger overhang. The second option would probably be the best, as this means that if you later move your bed; your rug will be large enough to supply the required fringe.

It is also considered bad form to have a heavily trafficked part of your home with half rug, and half flooring, so that people walking across it will have one foot upon the rug and one foot upon the floor. Not only is this potentially dangerous for people, it will also cause the rug to wear in a non-uniform fashion along one edge.

These simple guidelines are designed to ensure that your rug is presented in the best fashion, whilst making sure that there is no discomfort or obstruction caused, and that your rug will not be exposed to unnecessary wear and tear due to bad placement or size considerations. A rug of the correct size, placed in the right fashion, can be an enhancing asset to any living space.

Decorating with area rugs is a quick fix - an easy and inexpensive way to spice up a room. No longer are rugs used only as mere floor coverings. Now, rugs are also seen as beautiful decorative pieces. One can express herself, create a mood or add character to a living space with area rugs.

Area rugs are widely available in department stores, home specialty stores, rug shops and even in thrift stores and flea markets. The internet age also made it possible to shop online without leaving the comforts of home. Buying your rugs can be hassle-free with only a computer and internet connection on hand. In an instant, you will have your own amazing floor decors.

Before online shopping for your area rugs, here are some guidelines to help you choose the right rugs:

First, know the right size. There are different sizes of area rugs from very small to very big, so merely selecting a "quite right" fit won't really do. The area rug should perfectly fit your allocated space. Measure the area first and jot down the measurements. Area rugs sold online have detailed descriptions including the rug's measurements. Without troubling a sales personnel in a store, you'll be able to get your ideal rug.

Second, decide on the shape. Area rugs come in various forms from oblong and round to rectangular and square. Oval and round shapes look and fit best with small spaces while rectangular or elongated rugs are ideal for spacious rooms.

Your home design theme will help you decide which rug design to choose. The safest bet is to match the decors with the theme. If your home is decked with contemporary decorations, select area rugs that show modern patterns or colors. You can also incorporate elements of the theme to your decors. So if you have a beach theme for example, pick out rugs that have blue and green shades or natural materials like bamboo and sisal.

The season is also a great way to pattern your area rugs. Spring and summer are full of colors therefore, the more colorful your rugs, the more suited to the time of the year. Floral prints are also in for spring and summer. The cooler climate of autumn and winter brings out dark colors and plusher materials. You can have area rugs in solid earth tones or the classic black and brown. Wool rugs are perfect for keeping your feet warm.

Next, set a budget. With all the choices out there, you will only get confused without a set budget. There's also the risk of overspending. Know which type of rugs you can afford or those that you're willing to shell out money for like genuine Persian, Oriental and wool rugs

Finally, allot a quiet time for your online shopping. The selections are plenty and without a specific rug in mind yet, it can take hours for you to select the one for you. It's not impossible to like all of them! So have a weekend off and set an appointment with your computer. Better yet, do your research beforehand and canvass prices. When the day of your online shopping comes, you already know what to get.

Happy shopping!
