What Size Of Rug Do I Need?
It can be quite a complex issue when it comes to selecting the right size of area rug. But it can be kept simple by remembering that at the end of the day; it is your house and you should pick whatever size rug you are content with. There are however, some basic considerations and a few straightforward rules which can assist when trying to decide what size of area rug to decorate your room with.
Always set out your furnishings in the room before picking your rug, this will allow you to assess what size and shape of area rug would best suit. It will also let you ensure that the rug does not breach any of these basic rules set out in the rest of this article.
The first guideline that most interior designers will tell you is to leave at least 18" of gap around the edges of your rug. Any less than this and it will make the area seem smaller. In smaller rooms you may reduce this down to as little as 8", as the shrinking effect is not as emphasized in a small sized room.
If you are going to lay an area rug beneath your dining table with chairs around it, then it is best to leave at least 24" of rug around the table. This will allow for the easy movement of chairs, so that people may sit at the table without the chair legs catching on the edge of the rug. This not only protects the edges of the rug but is much safer.

What about it you are putting the rug under your bed? For a double or single bed, the overlap should be around 12 inches in width and about 24 inches for a King or Queen sized bed. Adjust the size of the rug accordingly, or leave a larger overhang if the bed is offset within a smaller room, or is placed against a wall. Leaving a larger overhang is the better long term option as this means that if you later move your bed, the rug will be large enough to accommodate such changes.
Designers also consider having a heavily trafficked part of your home with half rug, and half flooring to be a bad design feature. If you constantly have to walk across the area with one foot upon the rug and one foot upon the floor; it needs to be changed. Not only is this potentially hazardous but it will also cause the rug to wear in a non-uniform manner along that edge.
These basic conventions are designed to make certain that your floor rug is shown off in the best way, whilst making sure that your floor is not dangerous and that your rug will not be unnecessarily worn. A rug of the correct size, placed in the right way, can be an enhancing accessory to any room. So when you ask yourself "What size rug do I need?" think over these points, go with your heart and you are sure to get the perfect rug.
Area Rugs All Around
If Your Room Is Lacking Something - It could be a RUG!
When shopping for an area rug you want to make sure you have somewhat of an idea on what you're searching for. You'll need to know what type of color pattern, shape, size, and material that will best suite your room's décor.
There are many different materials out there that area rugs are made up of. The Persian rug is one of the most well known rugs and also the top of the line area rugs of choice. You'll spend a pretty penny on a Persian rug but it will be worth it in the long run if you don't have any children or pets. Persian rugs will sometimes be hard to find since they are mainly collector items for some that deal with antiques.
Your next popular area rug is the Oriental. It is an older tradition and has quite a bit of color involved. Many are oval, round, or rectangular and will give you different geometric designs in one pattern.
Braided rugs and rag rugs are very popular with the country theme. Rag rugs are colorful and made up of recycled materials that may be lying around your home. Very eco friendly and always hand crafted. Braided rugs on the other hand are colorful but made from the outside in. The ending of the rug will be in the inside so the pattern goes toward the middle. It looks like a rope which has been twisted like a snake. Again very popular in the American art theme.
Another rug which you could make at home would be latch rugs. They aren't as popular as they once were but are quite simple to make. You follow the directions which are color coated on a plastic netting to create your design of choice.
Of course you also have your bathroom rugs. If it is going to be used in a bathroom which has a shower and is used quite frequently you want to make sure it is able to get wet and evaporate the water rather than retaining it. Many bathroom rugs are slip resistant due to water which will sometimes end up on the floor. Also many bathroom rugs are made to be thrown into the wash and dryer so you're able to clean it without it falling apart.
