Thanks so much for the information. I am an adult whose been coping with this for her entire life. I had an occupational therapist in elementry who gave me different tools to make my life slightly easier, but in the end all she told me was "you'll always be a few years behind everyone else" there wasn't enough awareness or information about that, so I was left clueless and with bad self image about myself.. i am glad now there is more information to help childrem.

A ray of light for what seems to be 12 years of trying to feel my through the darkness, trying to find out what was wrong with my daughter. School's must have been aware of these symptoms, and yet they let me think it was just that my daughter had 'learning difficulties' which they would try and help if they could. All those years wasted not knowing the help she was entitled to...I'm angry oh so angry..but grateful for stumbling across this site...thank you so much.

I just want to share my story. I found out my son was dyspraxic when he was in pre-school. One of the nursery nurses said that he was displaying characteristics of a dyspraxic child. After 3 years of fighting with my local authority I finally managed to get him examined by their so called experts and got him statemented.
He went on to spend his entire primary and now secondary life with no friends because his behaviour is different.
Things went from bad to worse when he went to secondary school. In his 1st year they reported me to social services because they said I was to blame for his lack of self esteem plus he had been over heard saying he wanted to kill himself. Ofc it had nothing to do with him getting terrorised at school by other children and the fact he was always loosing his pens ect that again was my fault. After fighting with the school about their 1 lack of knowledge on the condition and 2 the fact that they didn't report to me directly that he was talking about suicide, plus the fact social services gave them hell for not following proper procedure in his case we struggled along to what is now his second year.
It is October now and I have had a phone call from the school every week in some cases more than once a week complaining about his behaviour. Its only a matter of time before it gets to the point where they again point the finger at our home life and I am nearing breaking point.
There are no schools that are state funded for his condition that will take him, (he isn't dumb enough for them), and myself and my partner cannot afford a private school.
If you are having the same problems I am having don't worry you are not alone. I just hope that at some point my local authority takes this matter seriously and provides a school for children like my son.

Thank you so much for this page, my son age 6 has not been diagnosed yet but I am 100 percent certain he has dyspraxia, he was a prem baby and small and although he had regular checks at the hospital when a baby where I raised my concerns of his non crawling and bum shuffling and lack of concentration- noting that he never picked up a 'logical thinking" toy such as puzzles or shape sorters I was repeatedly told it was down to his premature birth "don't worry he will catch up" are the words that spring to mind- trouble being he never has. I have now for the 4th time been asked to attend his school as his teacher feels he needs a one on one tutor- I thoroughly agree! Yet no one has ever mentioned this condition to me! I have done the online dyspraxia test my son ticking all but one box- I am thoroughly appalled that although I have raisedy concerns over his development the only reason I have discovered what the problem may be is through a friend ( who quietly suffers from dyspraxia).. I now will be able to concentrate on the things he is good at,rather than feel that we are going downhill every day. I have a meeting set up for Tuesday and will make sure he is directed to all help that he needs.

Thank you for this great resource on Dyspraxia. My son was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (I can't stand that name - it's not like it goes away magically at 18!). Apraxia if Speech is often considered a form of dyspraxia. I appreciate anyone attempting to educate the public. It would be wonderful for people to understand that our children aren't being clowns, they simply can't help it!

Hi, my son is already in year 2 and was diagnosed with Dyspraxia since 3 years old. One of our biggest challenge is to teach him to spell. Any suggestions how we can help him? Past experience from caretakers is much appreciated. Thank you.

I found this video really interesting, I am at present waiting for my 7 year old daughter to be tested for dyspraxia, I totaly agree that this condition has many elements that are apparent in other disorders. My daughter had a problem with her hearing and through nursery her lack of concentration, fidgeting, constant interrupting and various other things were acredited to this. It is now that she is in Primary 2 and cannot hold a pencil has never eaten with cutlery and cannot grasp swimming due to being unable to use both feet and arms at the same time that alarm bells started ringing. I work in the field of learning disabilities and many times thought there may be something - but dismissed it, now i feel terribly guilty, this site is very helpful, thank you.

my son is stuck in same rut as yourself aged 8 and knowen to be the class clown.. the teaching staff regardless how many times it has been brought to there attention that my son is one of the thousands on a waitin list to be diagonased with this conditions still treat him as though he's is out of control.. i wish they could step into my sons shoe's for a day to c how he feel's.. he cry's because he gets punished for something he can't help... it was suggested by the head teacher we moved hm school's... disgrace in this day n age that they are so ignorant to this condition.. sorry for spelling but have problem's with writing ans spelling also.......

Hello my name is Marie and im 23 at the age of 3 I was diagnosed with severe Dyspraxia and dyslexic tendicies. The child development centre told my mum that I wouldn't be able to look after myself or take my GCSE's. Im writing this to give you all hope my mum fought for help and people who would be able to teach me write speak etc. Until I went to junior school and my second year there was no one who tought me who understood or i could understand. And from there at 12 I improved my writing and reading age and at 16 i took my GCSE's and got a A BB CCCCC D. So please carry on fighting every child is indavidual but fight for your right and your childs to help. I hope this helps you all have hope. I was also in a mainstream school

Thanks for your comments. Dan has difficulty with visualisation, and I guess with audio because his literacy is delayed and so he doesn't understand verbal instructions an descriptions well. He is definitely a more tactile boy, he likes do hands-on things which therefore don't require writing or maths. He loves tinkering and taking things to bits and putting them back together again and recently has expressed an interest in working towards being a motor mechanic. Not sure if that really answers your question, as I'm not an expert and no-one that is has come back to me as said "oh Daniel learns best this way or that way" but its any interesting point to discuss with his school.
  • Evelyn_Saenz Feb 4, 2009 @ 4:21 am | delete
As a teacher, I find your lens on Dyspraxia very interesting. I would love to know if there are certain techniques that you have found that help Daniel. Does he learn best through audio, visual, tactile etc. methods?

    5 Stars and Favored.

Great way to introduce the topic. I used to teach in a school for special education - there were probably kids there with dyspraxia, but we did not use that label.

I started an a website www.discuss-dyspraxia.co.uk and wrote a book woodfieldpublishers.co.uk about an exercise programme I started 6-7 years ago in a mainstream school I work in. Maybe you would like to read my story. Over many years I have realised that in Europe children start school 6-7 years old and have 1% of dyspraxia. Motor skills are developed and they are then able to learn as nueral pathways are also developed (for processing information) and speech and language. Here we send children to school at 3 years old (Nursery) where some childrens motor skills are not developed (or speech and language) So children can not learn. I now with early intervention put these children on a programme and develop these weaknesses. Before we had children with Autism/aspergers, ADHD, dyslexia,learning/behaviour difficulties on the register. Now we stop the whole lot before "dyspraxia" is disgnosed. Dyspraxia I know was the root cause. I have 120 children who can prove it. Anyone is welcome.
