E-bike Insurance

Ranked #7,118 in Cars, #373,513 overall

E-bikes are exploding in popularity everywhere.

Here in Ontario the government is still reviewing these forms of transportation. It is important to review these new styles of transportation carefully with respect to safety and integration to other forms of transportation. We must all voice our opinion upon different aspects of the safe use of e-bikes, from e-bike insurance to licensing. Please be sure to answer the poll below. When you are riding, please be safe when you ride, and wear your helmet.

Get the Best E-bike Insurance you can

Lately, commuters are finding more and more of these e-bike on the roads. Concerns arising from this include uninsured e-bike drivers. Consider this, an e-bike driver is involved in an accident with a vehicle and injured. At this point, even though we do not know who is at fault, the e-bike driver may be sued. The bike has been wrecked beyond repair. The driver was injured enough that he/she will miss 2 weeks work from injuries.
Who will pay for these if the driver of the e-bike does not have e-bike insurance? The losses will come directly out the the drivers pocket. In the event of a lawsuit, the sewing lawyer will have to go directly after the driver. There would be no coverage in the event that damages were to be paid. This is also true for bicycles. However, e-bikes are being driving in much more of the manner of a moped or motorcycle.
I see e-bike drivers wearing helmets, and driving near the curb all the time. Cars, trucks, and vans are speeding past them in the same lane all the time. Unfortunately, I have also seen the ones that pass cars on the right at stop lights and then pull out in front of a surprised motorist. I even see them go up on the sidewalk to go around a corner then back onto the road. This is not safe and people are going to get hurt. The more there are on the road, the more chance of accidents.
E-bikes do not require a drivers license or insurance like a moped. (this may be different in your area, please check into it) The basic requirements an e-bike driver has is that they must be over the age of 16, wear a helmet, and the e-bike must not exceed 32km/h. (some places have more requirements please check your local ministry of transportation)
Covering yourself with the best e-bike insurance policy for riding your e-bike is a very important necessity. While it is not mandatory (I believe it should be). You will still save money on your transit to and from work, and other places. Without it, you are inviting greater losses. Owing a policy may mean that you may claim for a variety of matters, including:
- Income loss benefits, theft
- Medical benefits - for physiotherapy, medical equipment, counseling services
- Occupational therapy or attendant care benefits
- Benefits for help around your home.

The Most Important Thing For You To Do

Visit your local insurance provider and get them to 'explain' your total coverage to you. Do not pay for anything you do not understand. It is your money that you are paying out, know what you are getting.

Protecting your investment

I don't care where you live there is always someone out there that is looking for an easy buck. Theft is one of those things that happen to us all in one way or another. Your ride needs to not just have an electronic lock out (key?) but it should be locked down. Even I would not have too much trouble lifting a lot of those e-bikes. So to just throw one in the truck box and drive away would be easy. One can rewire for a new key.
Think of a good way to protect your e-bike from theft or vandals. If you are using it to go to work, do they have a storage area where you can have it locked down. Is there a metal railing that you could install your chain lock to so your ride cannot be carried off.
Protecting your ride from a number of potential losses can be done through using e-bike insurance.

Two types of Insurance

I recommend that you contact your home owner insurance policy holder. You can add on either a rider, or it may be covered under your contents insurance. I highly suggest that you talk to your insurance company to find out what it covers in the event of an accident. Get a police covering from replacement to repair, personal injury loss to liability.
If you are not a home owner and have no content insurance, (or tenant insurance) you can contact one of many insurance companies near you or online to get a quote. It is not all that expensive, and I would say that depending on the coverage you request, you should be able to get a policy in place for as little as $80 annually. More options and your rate will go up but it is important to get what you need. Some may require more than others because of how often or where they ride.

Ask for any additional benefits that might be available for only a small coverage. What about worldwide coverage? Check whether the insurance company will insure your e-bike if you are traveling with it to other countries.

Final thoughts

Understand your insurance policy properly. It is your obligation to understand it correctly. Know your rights and know your limitations.
Your policy might have some requirements of its own. Where you need to keep your e-bike when at home? Does it need to be locked at all times that it is not being used. You will be surprise to find out that there are all sorts of different conditions.

Do you believe that an e-bike should have the same rules as scooters and motorcycles? (insurance, licensing, ect.)

Every eBike should require the operator to have a license and insurance

Sir_James says:

It should be mandatory for every eBike operator to have training, license, and insurance. These eBikes are operated more like scooters than a bicycle.

Sir_James says:

I believe it should be mandatory that each eBike operator have training, a license, and insurance. eBikes are not driven/ridden the same way as a bicycle, more like a scooter (although slower).

eBikes should be left alone and continue to operate as a bicycle. No license or insurance needed.
