Help for Everyone Looking to eBay and Not Knowing Where to Start

Everyday I hear, "I wish I knew how to eBay" or "Can you teach me to eBay when you have time?".  I've learned that there are many hard working people out there, who just need a little help to learn how to make money for their families.  So today I decided that I can probably help more people by putting all my thoughts done in one place.

What I do may not be the best thing for you, but it's what has served me best.  I will try to give you a step by step guide to getting started, from signing up on eBay, to where to get wholesale merchandise cheaply, to the easiest way to get a template.

This lens is and will continue to be a work in progress.  In my opinion eBay is a work in progress.  I learn something new everyday that will make my business run better.  As I learn new things, I will pass them on to you.

Signing Up for an eBay Account

1st thing you need to do is open an eBay account. Think of a user name that you would like to be referred to as. My name is Bubbadah. Which is a made up word. Your user name should be reflective of what you intend to sell. I learned this after getting established and now am afraid my clients won't find me if I change me name.

Next think about purchasing a digital camera, if you don't own one. I personally would look to eBay, for all my early business purchases, so that you can start building up positive feedback. This will help when you start selling, as people without feedback take a while to start selling at good prices, since people aren't familiar with you.

Making Your Auctions Better than Everyone Elses

The 1st thing I noticed when trying to start eBaying was that my auctions were terrible. I tried using eBay's designer listing and the free photobucket image software and failed miserably. Then someone told me about all the different template and image hosting sites, one by one I tried them. Not being technical, I couldn't use any of them and their help lines were no help.

Finally, I got to Sellers Sourcebook, it was easier but I still had problems figuring it out. The difference was "Kristen" she talked me through every problem (via email) never making me feel stupid or small. I highly recommend using them for all your template and image needs. Eventually when you create your own template, they will upload it for you and work with your web designer to create your own web presence (but that's for a short time from now).

Where to Get Inventory

Small Lots from Private Sellers

When I started out, I purchased items from other eBay sellers. I would look for lots, wholesales lots, designer wholesale lots, etc. I was taken! Now I know to look for things like M*cy's Wholesale Lots, Bl**mingdale's Lot, etc. You see, resellers cannot use the Macy's or Bloomingdale's name in their ads or auctions, hence the stars. I learned this only after being taken numerous time by the "High End Department Store" tag. Did you know that sometimes the high end department store could be Target or Kmart? I sure didn't! Of course the local charity near me was happy to accept all my "High End Department Store" purchases and I did get a tax write-off.

So when I finally learned from this mistake, I started to find the right terms and look for those lots on eBay and elsewhere, only to find them Cherry Picked. Cherry Picked is when the wholesaler takes all the good items to retail and then sells the rest of the pieces in wholesale lots.

So, after years of struggling, I now offer real M*cy's and Bl**mingdale's wholesale lots. I buy pallets and break them down into lots that aren't cherry picked.
