Making Lampwork Beads

How are your glass beads made?

Trollbeads Style Glass Bead
This is a question we are frequently asked. Every bead Doug creates is individually made in a flame from a torch. The glass is melted, carefully crafted and made on a mandrel so there will be a center hole. (A mandrel is another name for a long metal bar.)

After he crafts a bead in the flame, he puts them in a kiln (like a very hot oven) which is set at over 900 degrees. Then Doug's beads are put through a special process called annealing. After a time of bathing in the kiln, the beads are allowed to cool slowly and over the course of the next few hours are brought down to room temperature. (Our kiln is digitally controlled.) This whole process is the key to making them very durable. A little known secret is that many of the glass beads that are made in China and other places overseas are not annealed. They may break much more easily. Annealed beads should last a lifetime.

We feel that quality is of the upmost importance and that is why we take the extra time and cost to make sure your beads are made right.

If you've always wondered how a glass bead is created, this should be interesting for you to watch. Doug is shown making a simple glass bead. Later it is annealed and then it is put through the process of adding a silver core.

Eagle Bay Designs' Ladybug Lampwork Beads

Here's the Story Behind Our Ladybug Beads

Trollbeads Glass Ladybug Bead

Doug has become kind of famous for his glass Ladybug beads made for Pandora and Trollbeads bracelets.

One day our boys found
a little ladybug in our home.
Most bugs are not so cute,
but this one was carefully picked
up and placed back outside.
She was the inspiration for our ladybug beads.

If you can't find any in our webstite store right now, keep checking back!

Doug Clark Crafting Lampwork Glass Beads

Creating Glass Beads in a Flame

Here we though we'd add a few more photos so you can see how these glass beauties are created. This is a photo of my lampwork artist, husband busy at work. Every bead he creates is individually made in a flame from a torch. The glass is melted and made on a mandrel so there will be a center hole.

As a side note, when I first heard about lampwork glass beads, I thought they were made and then a hole was drilled or some how made after the bead was created! It is much easier to do it this way!

A Close Up View

Lampwork Bead Being Made by Doug Clark

Here's a closer view of a murano glass bead being made in the flame. After Doug finishes making the bead, it goes directly to a kiln where it is very slowly brought back down to room temperature. When the process is finished, we have another beautiful lampwork bead ready to be enjoyed!

Everyone loves photos. So here is a few of our past favorite beads that we have sold. Enjoy!

Your beads are beautiful, but your photos would do them better justice if you used a light diffuser over your floodlamps. The reflected glare from the individual bulbs distracts from the lovely colors of the beads.

By any chance does Doug offer classes ? because i would love to come learn and possibly work for you ? If you could add me to facebook that would be awesome the connection is not working right, right now.
  • EagleBayDesigns Jan 26, 2011 @ 11:13 am | delete
Thank you for your comment Jaris. We are very sorry to say that Doug does not offer classes. The time it takes to run our business would really prevent that at this time. Have you tried looking for a glass lampwork instructor in your area? There are many good ones all over the country.

Keep trying on Facebook as we have no way to add anyone to our Facebook page ourselves. Thank you again Jaris and we wish you well.
