Getting Started

What do you write about?

Maye you sell fish tanks or perhaps you sell websites - whatever it is that you do that is going to be your central topic. However, some topics are frankly a bit dull.

What if you sell an accounting program? How do you pull links? No one is going to get very emotional about that latest double entry method.

You have a few options - go for the geeks with the technical stuff and risk loosing core readership or publish tips to make your accounting life easier.

I know what I would choose - with the second option what you will do has higher link value - it's a topic you should know about and some of that traffic may be willing to think about your product.

What if you run a firm of gardeners?

Then you'd be well away - tips on getting a great lawn, how to make your roses bloom for longer... the list goes on. But for a truly full link rate try to break some news - worlds biggest aphid (with photo's) or Giant Daisy bigger than a man...

There needs to be something unique, interesting, funny or cool to get peoples attention.

News for your subject area, a free give away or competition or fun quiz may all draw those links.

What if you are a photographer? What about a photo no one has been able to take before? Even if you fail to take the photo - the illustrated story of your quest is newsworthy on it's own.

Be the news.

Be talked about.

Things you should never do for a link

There are some things you should not do for a link no mater how tempted you might be.

Never pay for one just for the sake of a link. Never agree to running adverts or javascript on your pages just to get a link.

and the big one: link swaps...

If you must swap links don't swap links if the link you get is stored or shown by flash, java, javascript or other not engine readable source. There is little benefit in link swapping when the link may not produce

Many link swaps end up with your link on the links page which is worth nothing at all. If you do swap links link to the page where the link appears. Be clear with the other site owner what your expectations are.
