Hotfile is a file sharing site similar to rapidshare or megaupload but with a little difference, Hotfile pays you. You upload a file and every time someone downloads it, you earn around 1 cent (more or less depending on the downloaded file's size and your current rank). Sounds hard but it's pretty easy actually. Soon after joining you'll be earning a few dollars a day and after some time it can even turn into a solid passive income.

1. Always try to get more downloads in total then the number of files you have uploaded, HotFile doesn't like it when you upload too many files that get barely any downloads. This is because more files = more space on their server, uploading a 700mb file that is very popular is better then uploading 10 100mb files that don't do well.

2. Avoid uploading in parts, every downloader prefers a single download link whenever possible, this is especially true for movies. Remember you should avoid uploading too many files to HotFile whenever possible, why upload 6 parts of a movie when you can upload all of it at once and save the downloader some headache?

3. Never ever leech the download, each file has a unique md5 and HotFile knows when the same file has been leeched and uploaded 1000 different times to their servers from different accounts. To avoid this problem you should re-rar the download, that will change the md5 and HotFile will think its a non-leeched file.

4. Delete files that are not popular, so you've uploaded a file and it got only a few downloads? Delete it, the more useless files you have the less your rank so whenever possible clean out these "useless files".

5. Be active! Login to HotFile often and use your HotFile account to download files whenever possible, you'll drop a rank or two if you haven't visited for weeks, even if your files are getting tons of downloads.

What files to upload?

But in general you can upload ANYTHING on hotfile. Some people share a program that they have written, others the music that they have made. There are also a lot off people which are sharing WAREZ (illegal music, movies, games,...) and they make a lot off money with it. But I don't encourage this.

How to increase your rank?
How much you earn per download depends on your rank. Ranking exists on hotfile since 24.06.2009 and ever since then, users are complaining that they don't earn as much as they did before. I'll show you how to take advantage of rankings and earn even more...

You start with silver and your rank is updating daily.

Your status depends on your conversion ratio which includes:

1. The ratio of uploaded files to number of downloads.
2. The ratio of the users that downloaded your files and the users that become premium based on your uploaded files.

1. Working on the upload-download ratio
Hotfile doesn't have unlimited storage space so they don't want you to upload files that nobody downloads.
So don't upload 100 files that would have 25 downloads, it will guarantee you low rank. It's pretty easy to get good rank when you're starting, just make sure that every file you upload has at least 50 downloads and gold/platinum is pretty much guaranteed.
Even as you upload new files, you should promote old files from time to time. Good way to do it is to create megathreads on forums.

2. Working on the premium ratio
There are certain ways you can increase a chance for users to buy a premium account (and increase your rank).

1. Post only hotfile links. Using mirrors from other sites would allow users to download files simultaneously so there would be no need to buy premium account.

2. post files with large size.
Large files take more time to download and there's a chance that user will want to speed it up by buying a premium account.

3. Split larger files into archives (part 1, part 2...)
Hotfile allows you to upload files up to 400MB large. Rather than posting one large file, split it into archives. It's certain that the one who downloads the first part will also download the rest because the thing won't work otherwise. That would also get you more downloads...for example a single 400MB file would give you one cent with silver rank. But if you make 4 100MB files out of it, you'd get 4 cents.

More tips:

Activity?
I tried not to upload anything for a month just to see how will it affect my rank. At first it went up but then it started to fall slowly even tho I was still getting plenty of downloads from the old files. I think activity has some role in their ranking system. Now I upload files every day and I'm still 99% platinum. So don't stop uploading in hope you'll get better rank. That will only limit your earnings.

Deleting old files...
You can delete your files that don't get many downloads and which you don't intent to promote anymore. You won't lose what you earned from those files and you will improve your ratio.

And no, buying premium account for yourself won't effect your rank.

Avoiding file deletion
You can easelly avoid file deletion.

You have an option in hotfile file manager to make folders and sort your files- DON'T.
Sometimes they are checking the folders and they could delete your files for some reason, so the best thing is to keep them unsorted. You may also rename the file. If you feel extra paranoid, put it into rar file with password.

Don't spam!
If you spam like crazy, someone will report your files and then you'll be wondering why they got deleted.

If you want to reupload a file that got deleted, just put it into rar archive and it will be recognized as different file.

How to upload to Hotfile with FTP
Faster and more reliable alternative to manual upload on the site, is uploading over FTP.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a network protocol for transferring files from one computer to another over the internet or a TCP computer network.

If you haven't tried FTP upload before, you will be surprised how easy it is.
The easiest FTP client to use is FileZilla, and it's free (Click here to download )

1. Download and install FileZilla
2. Run FileZilla and enter this:

Host: ftp.hotfile.com
Usename: your hotfile username
Password: your hotfile password
Port: leave empty

3. Locate the file you want to upload from your computer and double click.

Yeah, it's that simple.
After the upload is finished, you can find your file in "my files" or "file manager" on the hotfile website.
