I'm researching earplugs because I have city noise at night when I try to sleep. This lens is the result of that investigation.

On this lens you will find customer reviews of earplugs as well as where to buy your earplugs online.

Tips for using gummy earplugs

On the non-reusable silicone earplugs: advantages and disadvantages

The advantage of gummy earplugs (not the official name) is that you can shape them to your ear. For instance:

1) I cut them in half - because the whole thing is just too large for my ears. Don't cut them in smaller pieces: this isn't gum: you can't put them back together after having cut them up.
2) knead them a bit and start giving them the shape of your ear (usually just a bit longer and tapered than the original)
3) Then just push them in your ear.

The main disadvantage:
* The gummy stuff leaves an oily residue in the ear. Not a good thing if earwax is an issue.
* sometimes the gummy is too tight in my ear and I can hear my own heartbeat in my ear. Not good if you are trying to sleep.

Snoring can be LOUD

Scientists have determined that the noise snoring makes isn't just annoying: it's objectively loud.

Snoring can reach levels of 91 decibels. That's comparable to the noise of a busy highway or a rising jumbojet.

Workers would have to wear hearing protection at such noise levels, because it can damage the ear.

Advantages and disadvantages of using FOAM earplugs

Advantages
  • It forms to the ear perfectly, so you don't have to worry about the size

  • I haven't had issues about hearing my own heartbeat with the foam earplugs

Disadvantage
  • It takes some getting used to. The foam is a bit abrasive to the ear. (there are special ones that have this less)

Foam earplugs seem too large?

You probably didn't put them in correctly.

Foam earplugs should fit into any ear. My ears are small: I cut the gummy plugs in half before use.

But with foam earplugs I have no problem: I roll them between my hands till all the air is gone. THEN put them in your ear. They always fit.

Earplugs that last longer

These earplugs don't get thrown away after each night - you just clean them and put them back in your ears the next time you need them. They are meant for swimmers as well.

Make sure the ones you get are the right size or can fit ears of different sizes.

Great advice you got here! Just wondered though, have you tried using the ER20's to sleep in. I wear them for clubbing and I think they are great. Saying that, I wouldn't sleep in them because the filter sticks out of the ear canal and would interrupt sleeping - unless you sleep face down or face up.

The best bet for earplugs for sleeping would be foam earplugs or custom made ones. I know some people find that foam earplugs can give sore ears, in which case they may consider customs even though they are more expensive.

If you are interested in finding out the pros and cons of foam vs reusables vs customs, I've written an article which you'll find here: http://hubpages.com/hub/Earplugs-what-types-are-there. Or visit my lens here: http://www.squidoo.com/why-wear-earplugs

i have foam earplugs but they hurt my ears, maybe they are not working properly as they stick out any pictures or instructions for proper use, also which earplugs are recommended for sleep for people with smaller ear canals who want comfort and noise reduction

Regretfully, I'll have to recommend some of these to my DH. I had no idea there were so many different types.
