Ears Ringing - The Truth About The Ringing In Your Ears
Having your ears ringing is perhaps one of the toughest experiences in your life. It may not sound as serious as some other conditions, but it has serious effects and implications. Although an estimate of 66 million of individuals in the United States suffer from this ringing in the ears, it still remains one of the most misunderstood conditions.
As many may not have known it yet, the medical term for your ear ringing is tinnitus. When you suffer from it, you are able to perceive a sound either in one or both of your ears even though there is no external source. It is commonly the result of exposure to loud noises for a long period of time, and it is often attributed to prebyscusis or age-associated noise.
One of the many misconceptions about tinnitus is that it is a disease. No, it is not a disease in itself, but it can be a manifestation of certain diseases or medical conditions such as Meniere's Disease, hyperthyroidism, ear infections, head and neck injuries, and blood flow problems such as atherosclerosis, anemia, and hypertension. And, it is not always a ringing sound that the sufferers hear. The sound that only you can hear may come as a buzz, boom, hiss, hum, roar, or a whistle. Further symptoms include dizziness and headache.
Tinnitus not being a disease means that there is no cure for it. But, when you look at the positive side of things, various treatments have come to be available of the years. Doctors may prescribe you with antidepressants to help you manage the stress that the unwanted sound brings. These drugs have been reported to have side effects, however. These include constipation, drying of the mouth, and blurring of the vision. As of the moment, there are no conventional drugs that are formulated to directly treat the unwanted sound. There are alternative treatments, however. Gaining popularity nowadays are herbal preparations, acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy, and homeopathy.
One of the most important truths about your ears ringing is that the condition loves a sufferer who easily gets stressed. The tinnitus treatments that you are using or will be using would be for nothing if you do not know how to manage your stress, or if you are very impatient about seeing the improvements the soonest time possible. Have a friend listen to you, listen to the sounds produced by nature, or any activity, as long as it will keep you relaxed and calm, and remember that the treatments may take some time so do not give up easily.
