Earth Day Crafts For Kids

Earth Day will soon be with us as April looms into view! So now is the time to start thinking about some Earth Day Crafts for the kids to do or that you and they can do together.

Many kids nowadays do want to feel that they are able to contribute something meaningful to society. In fact some parents have commented that their kdis are even more environmentally aware than them!

In large part this is because they have the opportunity to learn more about our impact on our World and the environment in school.

So as Earth Day approaches in April 2011 why not work with them and try some fun and environmentally friendly Earth Day Crafts where you can reuse and recycle items from around your home.

An Easy Earth Day Craft Idea

Create a Paper Mache Globe

Earth Day Crafts IdeasOne great Earth Day Craft idea that you might like to do with your children is making a paper mache globe.

You should start by tearing some old newspapers into strips which are about 1/2 to 1 inch wide. Then having made a paste from one cup of flour and one cup of water you need to blow up a small balloon obviously a round one is better! In fact the rounder the better.

Now dip the paper into the paste which you made earlier and wrap the strips around the balloon in several different layers so that once the balloon is popped the paper mache structure will stay intact.

Your kids ned to allow the globe to dry for few days and then you pop the balloon.
You can either do it for them or get the kids to trace and then paint the continents and the seas onto the paper mache globe.

Then you need to let it dry again so that your paper mache globe is complete in time for Earth Day itself.

An Earth Day Craft Activity For Your Kids

Growing a Tin Can Herb Garden

Earth Day Crafts IdeasA great Earth Day Craft idea that your kids are going to love is creating a Tin Can Herb Garden.

Firstly you will want to Wash out some empty tin cans and allow them to dry. Then paint them with some acrylic craft paint before decorating them once the paint is dry.

I would suggest that the holes that need to be punched into the bottom of the can for the drainage should be done by an adult.

Then get the kids to add 5-10 small rocks at the bottom of the can then on top of those place enough soil to fill the can up to about two-thirds full.

You then have the choice of either planting some seeds so that the kids can watch them grow or find some pre-grown plants to add to the can.

Once you have done that get the kids to add enough soil to fill the can and then water it. You should place the can in a shallow dish to catch any extra water.

This Earth Day Craft activity teaches children about plants and how to take care of them. But it also encourages them to grow herbs which you can then use in family meals.

If you get them interested you may find that the next thing they want to try is growing their own fruits or vegetables.
