Earth Day can be everyday!

Ranked #6,148 in Holidays & Celebrations, #103,619 overall

Two quotes inspired this article . . .

"The chief obstacle to the progress of the human race . . . is the human race."
~ Don Marquis (1878 - 1937) US humorist

"The more humanity advances, the more it is degraded."
~ Gustave Flaubert (1821 - 1880) French writer

Those are brilliant quotes from the non-scientific world and I am always so humbled by how artistis and creative people have long observed what some of us have set out to prove.

Intro photo source: PIX-JOCKEY (Roberto Rizzato) on flickr see here. Creative Commons

The focus of this article is the urgency of matters related to, well, the survival of our species.

You might think this includes finding a cure for cancer or some other scientific breakthrough. But, in reality, it has more to do with how we treat and respect mother earth and everything that lives upon it or under it . . . including plants and creatures.

It also has to do with helping support those who are already working on these matters, including those too busy trying to 'put out fires' to toot their own horn. There are many on Squidoo who are doing just that - I have featured their efforts within this lens.

Hope you find this article (lens) both helpful and inspiring.

Water

Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. (Source: http://www.charitywater.org/whywater/)

Photo source: waterdotorg on flickr / Licensed under Creative CommonsIt is hard to think of this as a crisis when two thirds of the earth is covered by water. However this is fast becoming one of the most underrated environmental issues we have. A scarcity of food is not even as important. There are plenty of environmentalists, scientists, humanitarians and activists taking up this cause. I have been lucky to have my work also be recognized by Canadians. Included within my featured lens next is the work of other lensmasters equally deserving of recognition. Hope you will have a read . . .

It took until 2010 . . .

for clean, safe water to be declared a human right, why so long?

The Brita water filter is easier to use and what a difference it can make to not be taking in those chemicals.

  • Tipi Apr 23, 2012 @ 5:09 pm | delete
I grew up during times where nothing was wasted and it was just pretty much ingrained in me to waste not, want not and recycling and reuseing came pretty naturally.
  • Jillynn Apr 20, 2012 @ 3:21 pm | delete
    Yes, I recycle with enthusiasm.
  • TeamSTM Apr 20, 2012 @ 2:56 pm | delete
I do Recycle Plastic, Paper, Cardboard and Aluminum Can but the City Collect this every other week. It takes me about that long to fill the city's Recycle Bin before I move to the Pick-up zone! ;)
  • Steve_Kaye Mar 12, 2012 @ 11:20 pm | delete
We recycle everything that we can. We also buy less trash. That is, we buy only as much food as we know we will eat. We stopped subscribing to newspapers. We use cloth bags when we shop. And so on. Beyond this, we're still seeking more ways to reduce waste.
  • Sep 12, 2011 @ 4:31 pm | delete

  • Tipi Apr 23, 2012 @ 5:11 pm | delete
I usually have my groceries delivered for a small fee, I don't have to use my car and they bring it in their own bags. I do have "green" bags for when I do go out though.
  • goo2eyes Apr 20, 2012 @ 7:18 pm | delete
for food shopping, i use a textile bag which is very sturdy. happy earth day again.
  • Jillynn Apr 20, 2012 @ 3:22 pm | delete
Yes, both canvas bags and thermal protecting bags for things that need to stay cold from the grocery store.
  • ---Chazz Apr 17, 2012 @ 11:02 pm | delete
Yup. Easier and stronger to carry than grocery bags also.
  • Steve_Kaye Mar 12, 2012 @ 11:22 pm | delete
Yes. We keep a supply of cloth bags in our car so that we always have one ready when we shop. I keep one bag in each door pocket. And I have about four in the trunk.
