Is The Earth Movie by Disney A Copy Of The Planet Earth Series?

Have you seen the Planet Earth series? Have you seen Disney's Earth movie? Did you love them? Would you say they were the same movies? How do you feel about Disney re-using Planet Earth footage in a movie made for the big screen? Are you feeling ripped-off, cheated or swindled or do you think it was worthwhile to see it on the big screen, that the film was so magnificent that the overlap was okay? Sound off on this page about how you are feeling about Disney's new Earth movie!

Earth was co-produced by BBC, Greenlight and Mark Linfield and is presented by DisneyNature.

"Earth isn't a cut-down of Planet Earth. We shot them side by side. We were going for rather rare and difficult behavior, and frankly if we hadn't have had the resources from the TV series to allow us to put in days into the field, we'd never have been able to get that rare behavior."

~~ Linfield, Co-director

"The message is, respect the fragile ecosystems of this vast world we merely share in." ~~ Boston.com

Earth, the first movie from DisneyNature, is a 90-minute documentary revamped from BBC and the Discovery Channel's Planet Earth series from two years ago.

"Earth was shot alongside Planet Earth, using many of the same crew, in part to cut costs. At least half of what is contained in the Disney film has already been released on the BBC, Discovery Channel and DVDs." ~~ Time on CNN

WHAT DO YOU THINK? IT'S YOUR TURN!

Is It Fair Or Even Ethical That DisneyNature Reused So Much Footage From Planet Earth in the Earth movie?

Yes, absolutely!

angel690 says:

My wife and I would love to see this movie...

Tim says:

I am returning the Disney Earth DVD. I put it in for my classroom, and right away my students said we've already seen this. It is the same exact footage as the BBC Planet Earth DVD's we've already watched. What a rip off!

says:

Sure why not? Its good exposure for both...

Seriously? says:

There are many comments from people who own Planet Earth or have seen the series on Discovery and who are angry with Disney for making them pay to see it again. My only question is "did you NOT watch the ads for Disney's Earth?" It was immediately clear from the first movie ad that this footage was identical or, at best, very close. Perhaps Disney felt you would realize this when watching the ads, that the title "Earth" would reinforce it and the fact that they clearly state that it was made in conjunction with the BBC, Greenlight Media and Discovery Channel might also alert you to this fact. The bottom line is that if you chose to see the movie, you have to be responsible for your decision. It's not "shame on Disney" for putting this footage on the big screen, it's "shame on you" for not realizing you'd already seen it! Short of having a flashing warning that read “if you’ve seen Planet Earth, you’ve seen this”, I don’t know how much more forthcoming Disney could have been. Honesty, people!

Rebecca says:

I do not think it is unethical. The commercials clearly show re-used AND new footage. I didn't go see Disney Earth because I own Planet Earth on blu-ray and have a rather large screen and nice surround sound system. For me, movie theatres mean no "pause" button, no bathroom breaks (unless you want to miss a good movie), and possible distracting viewers. So why not stop complaining and face the facts: if you saw the commercials, recognized clips, and still paid for it in theatres, it's no one's fault other than your own.

Get a big screen.
Buy Planet Earth or Disney Earth on DVD or Blu-ray.
Watch it/them/neither.
Get over it.

IAmSpinalTap says:

Ethical? You can't be serious. Of course it is.

Almost half of the footage in the film is brand new--never shown on Discovery Channel, so people need to get a grip. Even it was 100% re-used footage, though, it would still be completely fair. There are theatrical re-releases all the time for movies that have been shown for "free" on television.

No way, Monkeybrain!

Squidoo-Freak says:

No! They have got the resources to do their own! Planet Earth Blue Ray is the original - and the best!

Max says:

NO, the photographers spent YEARS of time and effort documenting the footage they captured. It's unfair for a huge company like Disney to come along and use that to construct a fantastic looking movie without doing much work at all!

bob bobert says:

its bad enought that BBC made the movie, and Discovery gets all the credit for the movie, now disney? What a bunch of crap!

10 Dollar Rerun says:

I don't think it's unreasonable for people to assume a new movie is going to be all original content. Instead Disney reran footage from a series that has been playing on discovery for two years, I was in disbelief when the film started and everything was familiar to me.

I also think the tagline that it follows several families is somewhat misleading, it does so only loosely, filling in the rest of the time with scenic locations/random cute animals. Basically it's a real waste of money if you've seen Planet Earth and I wish Disney would have made the connection between the two more clear.

no longer disney fan says:

I just came home from Disney Earth and it is Planet Earth. No doubt about it. Down to some of the same lines Sigourney spoke. "Oops, missed a spot"

C'mon Disney, in this economy you're gonna WASTE peoples' hard earned money on a re-mix? I guess originality is too hard for you to come by these days, eh? I'm very disappointed. I'll tell you right now, there's no need to bring my daughter to see Disney Oceans, because we have already seen it.

Thanks for WASTing our money.

tad bit teary eyed says:

I at least thought Disney would have toned down the death and killing scenes as it has a "G" rating, oh no instead they slow the footage down! Now how is that for a family night at the movies, the baby gazelle gets eaten by the cheetah! (which takes almost 2 minutes to watch). the only difference is that james earl jones calls the bears mommy and daddy as opposed to the bbc version which use the heading of male and female.

Jeff says:

It was ridiculous that Disney actually charged me for footage
that has already been released. How can one say that is Ethical?
Being ethical means acting with the highest degree of integrity,
and I certainly don't remember seeing a commercial that was upfront
and said "This movie will charge you for footage you have seen
already". How would you feel if the new X-Men movie was really the
last X-Men movie for the first 45 minutes? People would be outraged.

DH says:

What a waste of money. Completely deceitful on the part of Disney.

Pam Guns says:

It's not OK if you don't say it up front.

BG says:

What a rip off. Unethical. Came out the theater pissed. Have the $50 dvds at home, didn't need to throw away money at the theater. Deceitful advertising.

Chris says:

They should have somehow indicated as much. I feel ripped and the Disney *brand* has just decreased in value in my mind.

Matt Gipson says:

The only difference I can between the two is the title. It was like all Disney did was take the "Planet" out of the title, re-edited the footage, and had someone else narrate. It was nice to see it again on the big screen, but the footage was all WAY too familiar.

Nicki says:

This is exactly the same footage as on the Planet Earth series but with a different narrator. I purchased the whole dvd set and feel as if I paid over again for 6 people to view it on big screen. Disney I would have expected better from you!!!!!

Dan Picker says:

Completely unfair and unethical. I paid full price for 5 people to hear different narration set to footage we already own. This is a monumental ripoff. I love Disney but I'm sad to see them using Earth appreciation and education as a front for fooling people into spending more money with a slightly re-packaged film.

When we complained at the theatre we got the "you are not actually going to lodge a complaint about such an important movie???" treatment. On the contrary, shame on Disney and the BBC.

Does it really matter that the footage is the same? We forget each and every day how uniqe our planet is. We forget how in danger it is. So what if the footage is the same or even simaler, as long as people go to see it and keep in mind how special this planet is and how badly we as care takers really treat the only living thing that we know of in the universe. So get off your high attitudes and enjoy the wonders, then like Disney go do something to help save the only world any of us will ever know.
